I suppose today it would seem that way but back when it was released it was considered innovative and ground breaking. Up until that point nobody had tried to infuse classical music with rock and roll. This album even surpassed Sgt Pepper back than and that was no easy feat. Mind you I agree with your opinion of this album I.E. that it is rather pretentious and overblown but also keep in mind that The Moody Blues originally intended this to be their LAST album when they recorded it. They had no idea how popular it would become and that they would be forced to continue on until they started playing casinos.
I must disagree with yo. I think Knights in White Satin is the lamest track on there. The only two good songs on there worth listening to would be Peak Hour and Twilight Time.
