it's an easy way to catalog books, working roughly the same as cataloging music on RYM. don't pay much attention to the general GR community or the average ratings, though. genre fiction is always overrated, and classic literature is rated poorly by people who had to read it in school (just compare all the highly-rated generic fantasy on that list with Moby Dick's 3.45 avg). you'll find some quality reviews on more niche literary fiction, however.

There's nothing wrong with changing your opinion often (in fact, it is good to question your opinions all the time) but don't just blatantly advertise a product in the thread like you've been taking it for years then tell everyone "lol nvm" the next day.
