some of my faves:
>Happy End - Kazemachi Roman (rock, folk)
>Shiina Ringo - Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana (shibuya-kei, art pop)
>Fishmans - Long Season (dream pop)
>Acid Mothers Temple - La Nòvia (psych, world music)
>Les Rallizes Dénudés - '77 Live (noise rock)

Soutasei Riron

MidnightPumpkin, a Japanese ska band.

youtube.com/watch?v=M7YsHYUsH-w

Kalafina, a folk-rock(I guess?) trio.

youtube.com/watch?v=-wILF0YwvNM

Hamada Maron, jazz-rock I guess? Really amazing vocals.

youtube.com/watch?v=suXiDL8BdhI

Kashiwa Daisuke is good, no vocals though. It's like ethereal and experimental stuff.

Kyary Kyary Pamyu of course,

youtube.com/watch?v=NLy4cvRx7Vc

Scandal, another all female rock band, but really good and varied.

youtube.com/watch?v=mGyXFJXa-18

Susumu Hirasawa, a musician and composer, he did the music for Paprika

youtube.com/watch?v=APIKVLw1tT0

White Ash, a regular rock band. This video is funny specifically because of the subtitles but they do have great songs.

youtube.com/watch?v=A3BATYidd10

Uchu-Jin, I don't know how to describe this. I only know the few songs they(she?) did for the Aku no Hana OPs.

youtube.com/watch?v=N4wbgsFz7vE

And then of course Vocaloid music. The best two artists IMO are Supercell and Last Note.

youtube.com/watch?v=qBHQkO4S_XU

Gauze - Equalizing Distort (crust punk):
youtube.com/watch?v=evvJs1Kkffo

Crow - Bloody Tear (crust punk, my favorite jap crust punk band)
youtube.com/watch?v=wXJ5qJ80FYw

Ghost - Hypnotic Underworld (experimental rock):
youtube.com/watch?v=xkeT9XfNp60

385 (jazz punk, basically midori with slap bass):

youtube.com/watch?v=RjgYADDWOFU

Fuck yes GISM

Yeah but this doesn't have some core good shit, like GISM under the punk section.

Man, I love tricot

Soichi Terada
youtube.com/watch?v=iCutmdJDqdE

Cruyff in the Bedroom (dream pop/shoegaze)
youtube.com/watch?v=js7JVXBH_tQ

Morita Doji (fold/psychedelic)
youtube.com/watch?v=3DIoDNxXruA

Susumu Hirasawa (composer/all around gorgeous musician)
youtube.com/watch?v=xTjQ0GcTyyo

P-Model (new wave/Susumu's band from back in the day)
youtube.com/watch?v=HbCC5f17BQE

Metronome (new wave? I guess?)
youtube.com/watch?v=6MZe5vRA76M

QP Crazy (hardcore punk/fucking insanity)

Framtid (crust punk)
youtube.com/watch?v=g6vDP2Tm9UQ

shit man, surprised your still around?

anything new on the jpn end you'd rec?

Also to continue and supplement with what I dont believe has been mentioned yet:

Nikaido Kazumi (avant-folk)
Meme (avant-folk)
Afrirampo (noise/psychedlic rock - Suuto Breako is a must)
Panicsmile (postpunk)
Number Girl (post-hardcore)
Supercar (shoegaze, alt-rock)
Haco (art pop) (after Dinner - Paradise of Replica is a must)
Daisuke Tobari (avant folk)
Takako Minekawa (picopop/shibuya kei)
Sintaro Sakamoto (lounge - former frontman of Yura Yura Teikoku)
Toru Takemitsu (classical, film music - scored a lot of the Kobo Abe film adaptations)
Yasushi Akutagawa (classical, film - son of renowned writer Ryuunosuke akutagawa)
Toshiki Kadomatsu (city pop)
Hiroshi Sato (city pop)
ShojoSkip (shoegaze)
Clams (shoegaze)
Aki Onda (musique concrete)
Otomo Yoshihide (all sorts of fun things)
Rovo (prog - Boredoms offshoot)
BOaT (tough one to peg for me - rock?)
Eddie Marcon (folk)

And something I've been digging quite a bit lately:
youtube.com/watch?v=0IR61b0ADXk

Thank goodness. This is the best version of this song.

>lightes a bunch of roman candles on stage
>someone just fucking rolls in it
jesus fuck

Both of those punk shows look fucking gr8 tho. Damn.

i lurk occasionally. almost never post anymore these days though.
i haven't actively kept up with Japanese releases since probably 2015 please understand
i love that pic tho, haco follows me on twitter

The front man from QP Crazy is Crazy SKB. He's also a wrestler with 666 Wrestling and he's a madman. I can't find it, but he routinely lights a baseball bat on fire and smashes people with it. Fucking love that guy.

That's a pretty vague question... what kind of music do you prefer?

I tend to like a lot of the girl rock bands like Aldious, Scandal, Band-Maid, and Ganglion. Some folks even like Babymetal... they're okay but I like groups that are a band, not have a band.

didn't see this on the chart

>Mainliner - Mellow Out
>psych/noise rock

>routinely lights a baseball bat on fire and smashes people with it.
That's fucking beautiful damn

currently listening to this, came to post it. nice

>haco follows me on twitter
JEALOUS - and yeah, Pika from Afrirampo drew it for her, cuz apparently HAco looks like Candy Candy (side note: feel like there are so many collabs i'd love to see her do - Haco + Otomo Y, Haco + Pika, Haco + Jim O'rourke - possibilities are endless

and right on, well then any recs in general for the road (doesnt have to be current either)? Or just not feeling music as of late?

>Kyary over MEG and Ami Suzuki

This is most of the Japanese music I play semi-regularly, though since I lived there in 2002 some of it is for nostalgic reasons rather than incredible quality. Hopefully people find some fun new tunes.

I'd be remiss if I forgot these guys. And I almost did. Hopefully someone listens to this.

Fucking KING-SHOW, they're a legend.

youtube.com/watch?v=WmHWNSXTzKg

And other Kenji Ohtsuki works like Tokusatsu
youtube.com/watch?v=RTK3aZV00yQ

actually disregard that, I suck cocks. Both of these videos are Tokusatsu, but the first one is a cover of a King-Show classic, San Francisco, and there's Eddy on the piano so it's almost just as the real thing.

GISM is under the metal section for some reason
anyway, japanese music is a meme

>real japanese extreme metal
kawaii xd upvotes nigga

YMO might be the single most influential japanese band ever, they influenced a lot of different genres that exist today from techno to shibuya-kei.
Sakamoto is an exceptional musician, but I agree Takahashi and Hosono are also key people, they produced a lot of artists under their YEN Records label. Jun Togawa for example.

GISM's much more on the metal spectrum of crust than the punk spectrum, actually. A lot of J-Crust tends to have much more metal riffing (thanks to GISM's influence), than say British or American crust.

it's true though, gism's more of a metal group than a punk group, their riffing and guitar-tone is much more metal than punk.

Only Japanese band i listen.

So Hiromi Uehara is performing in my crusty ass hometown in a month, so it feels kind of like a waist not to go see her, but does anyone know a good way to get into her music? Have only listened to a few songs so far

RIP Shinji

No love for Boom Boom Satellites?

I like their other albums even more, one of my most listened artists since I discovered them recently.
I wish they'd come back ;_;

I'm working on an entry level japanese music guide as well. Should be finished by next week

pic related, an excerpt from the chart

Hosono is better senpai

Ichiko Aoba - 0

>tfw the only one who likes mucc :(

They were really big and helped push the visual kei movement forward (although they were not the only ones). But YMO is more influential on more levels. They didn't just push the techno-pop in Japan, they influenced electronic music world-wide.
Also, YMO are older. Before X Japan formed, YMO were already touring around the world. I don't think X Japan started doing overseas concerts until recently (luckily I saw them in 2011, it was a blast)

I'm not a big fan or anything, but the few stuff I've heard by them is good.

If you like Mucc, you might like Babylon.
youtube.com/watch?v=Nq6zOLgumtE

Kinoko Teikoku

That's a long album.

Aimer

not for me

The Japanese are really good at writing songs. Maybe it's because they really like Jazz, but the chord progressions are always great.

>white on neon pink

why tho

Unironically first period L'Arc-En-Ciel :
youtube.com/watch?v=PoJpZ2ZY_vk

Oh and Japanese bassists are incredibly good and overlooked in the West.

>chord progressions

Nice may may.

What else am I supposed to say? "I like how that collection of notes goes to another progression of notes and how that progression of notes goes to another progression of notes"?

>Shinsei Kamattechan
Pretty good. I've never heard of them(her?) thanks, user.

lol, jazz has objectively shit-tier songwriting
It's the last genre I would ever give as an example of good songwriting

I don't know why you bothered telling me that, but okay. Thanks for the (You).

Because it's completely ridiculous, you know nothing of actual songwriting

What are you actually trying to say? I just said that I like how a group of people write songs, and I think that they're good songwriters.

Why are you acting all high and mighty over fucking songwriting?

It's kawaii

Can I get some japanese jazz reqs? I have a pretty decent knowledge of American jazz, but I never really explored jazz from Asia
unless you wanna count watching Sakamichi no Apollon
>No bloodthirsty butchers

Breaks my heart. They're my joint favourite band of all time. So underrated.

youtube.com/watch?v=ema_ZFg2lEY

so sad that one guy died. What's up with japanese frontman dying from cardiac problem ? Based Shinji did too I think

Any love for toddle? I went to Japan this summer, and went to a toddle gig while I was there. Hisako's been in some of my favourite bands (Number Girl, butchers, toddle), so seeing her in person was so fucking bizarre.

Early L'Arc is pretty good indeed, I also like their Tierra and Heavenly albums, I think they're amazing. After that it was all downhill but still they had some good songs here and there, they're all good musicians but they became more and more boring and bland.
Tetsu is indeed a pretty based bassist.

And I agree about japanese bassists.
Check out this band, got not one but two bass players. Their sound is rather unique (and bizarre due to their "creepy fairy tales" concept)

I cannot stress Dir en grey enough. They have grown and evolved so much over those years while still keeping a "macabre" sound. A lot of their old fans jumped ship when they stopped dressing like visual kei faggots and by taking in more western influence, but I honestly think not a single album by them is the same. They don't seem happy making the same songs. I like both their visual kei and their more western stuff. Try Uroboros, Dum Spiro Espero, and Arche. If you don't like it, go for Gauze, Macabre, and Kisou. If you don't like it, either, go for the middle stuff which mixes both their visual kei influence with the stuff they do now like Vulgar, Withering to Death, and The Marrow of a Bone.

Nujabes.

RIP Shinji

>ywn feel this much and be able to translate it perfectly into music

Unadulterated jazz might not be as great in terms of form, since it focuses more on improvisation, but when jazz theory is applied to a more pop type of structure the results are usually really good

This might sound stupid, but ill ask anyways.

Im looking for some music, particularily intstrumentals with the really whiney guitars. Im asking here because ive only ever heard it from Japanese artists, and im sure theres more out there. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

>no Kazuki Tomokawa

Do you have an example of a whiney guitar sound?

Maybe he's talking about pinch harmonics?

Theres a lot of it throughout this.

Their sound is certainly pretty metallic, but they are a hardcore punk band through and through. There's a reason Souichi filled in for Randy, and it's not just because he's an amazing guitar player.
