Cred Forums, how do I get good at judging music?

Cred Forums, how do I get good at judging music?

Basically now I just listen to whatever I think sounds good, but I can't really describe why I think an artist is good or bad.

You're either born with natural intelligence and analytical ability or you're not. Fags like you just end up parroting Cred Forums's opinions and will never have any true opinions on art. It "sounds good"? Who cares? Music is about more than "sounding good".

Alternately, you could expose yourself to good music critics like Robert Christgau and Lester Bangs and try to truly understand what they say.

>Christgau
You mean the man who thinks prog rock and jazz rock are awful on prinicple?

If you like it, if you think the lyrics speak to you or the music resonates with your soul or whatever cheesy terms they come up with nowadays, it's all that matters, really.

Pleb.
Music is art, so judge it as art. Simple as that.

The #1 rule of being a critic is "If you won't remember it in a couple months, then its not good'

don't.

I've enjoyed music a lot more since I deleted my RYM account and stopped thinking about what I'd rate an album out of 10. Just listen to music for the experience, you don't have to review / have a concrete opinion about everything you listen to

Thing is, I feel like I am missing out on a lot of music that is considered "good" by most people.

Take a band like Animal Collective for example: Loads of people love their songs, but I don't, but I can't really describe why.

Take an art or music class at your college

Exactly. Those are awful genres.

why do you want to judge music anyway
just enjoy what you like

You could make friends with the people who hand out the "music awards" which are the people on this list:

thezog.info/list-summaries/

Also, if you want to know how the people on this list got to be where they are, start reading at page 12 in this book:

prometheism.net/library/jewishsupremacism.pdf

The Ultimate Rule ought to be: 'If it sounds GOOD to you, it's bitchin'; if it sounds BAD to YOU, it's shitty. The more your musical experience, the easier it is to define for yourself what you like and what you don't like. American radio listeners, raised on a diet of _____ (fill in the blank), have experienced a musical universe so small they cannot begin to know what they like.

...

Having a good ear for notes and knowing a bit of music theory can really help. I can hear how many chords are used and what they are, relative to each other. I found I generally like 2 chord songs the most, usually major 7th chords, usually either
I and iV
V and vi
I and vi

bonus points for the minor'd fourth chord

it's all chord choices and production for me.

I like the song Rubber by Yuck

echoing what this guy said it's nice to just be able to enjoy things without thinking super critically about it

>enjoying more music is bad, because if you enjoy and think that "bad" music sounds good to you, then it harms you in some way and shows you are unintelligent

AC takes a lot of effort to listen to and it can seem like a chore to listen to them and understand their intentions. But once you put in the effort to finally "get" them, they're quite amazing and often very beautiful.

But if you're not into psychedelic/experimental pop music in general you probably won't like them just because of the nature of the genre. Weed helps too. I didn't really like MPP until I first listened to it high. Now it's up there as one of my favorite pieces of psychedelic music. Panda Bear solo is great too.

Fucking this.
Just enjoy it.

To OP:

You smoke vapor cigarettes. You are a fan of breaking bad. You have a sleeve tattoo. You are a millennial. You are a fan of modern family. You are have masturbated to cuck porn at one point in your life.

You are reddit.

> I, V, IV
>pleb

Exactly what this guy said

I hope for you're sake that you're not actually this retarded
>he thinks that thinking critically about music means giving it a rating
Retard alert. You're pathetic, you'll go through your entire lives without a single original thought it opinion.
>bbut it sounds good!
Pleb.

Maybe to you and him. The rest of us will continue to enjoy the best rock has to offer.

Enjoy your cheesy pleb version of jazz

Xgau called ITCOCK "ersatz shit" for a reason. Hint: google "ersatz".

>listening to jazz rock because you're afraid of real jazz

Nice meme.

Jazz rock can be a lot of fun to listen to, but I agree that it isn't in the same field as regular jazz. I don't think it's inferior in any way, just a different beast.

Go ahead, plebs. Run along with your uncritical, consumerist view of art.

But you are not entitled to have an opinion or argue with others over the quality of music when you literally lack personal taste. People like you are easy to spot. "Eclectic" tastes, a disregard for attitude and lyricism when thinking about music, an ignorance of music's importance and influence in society, and a general "I SHOULD LIKE EVERYTHING BECAUSE IM NOT A CONTRARIAN, ALL MUSIC IS GOOD".

Fuck you. You're no different from radio pop listeners, except they don't try to pretend that they're music lovers.

>projecting this hard

...

Nice response, but my post can't possibly be construed that way by anyone other than a plebien retard.

>You smoke vapor cigarettes
my brother does, but i don't
>You are a fan of breaking bad
never watched it
>You have a sleeve tattoo
Nah. Tattoos are a waste of money
>You are a millennial
true
>You are a fan of modern family.
i don't even watch Television
>You are have masturbated to cuck porn at one point in your life.
Nah. I prefer solo videos.
>You are reddit.
hah. So original user

>tfw i though i was on my thread but i replied to a post that i wasn't even directed towards me

>tfw listening to albums and don't have to think about what position it is on the AOTY list

feels good, man

Through it's artistic concepts, interesting use of musical theory concepts, etc,

Learn to critically evaluate art, watch how other people do it and you'll probably end up learning it yourself, unless your mind doesn't work that way.

>Retard alert. You're pathetic, you'll go through your entire lives without a single original thought it opinion.
>>bbut it sounds good!
>Pleb.
actual cancer. you should learn how to not be a splurge before you think your opinion holds any weight

>Music is about more than "sounding good".
this is actually very wrong, but nice try.

get meme'd on newbitch.

Just keep listening to what you think sounds good. That's how you do it. That's what music is all about. There really aren't any such things as good or bad music. Those are concepts conceived by insecure people who just want another way to stroke their egos by judging others. People have such low self esteem that they want to make fun of you for liking something they don't like. Do yourself a favor and leave yourself the way you are. You'll be a better person. Don't be a music critic.

god i hate newfags

Dear God is it that hard for people to listen what they like, what makes them happy. Why would you need "good" or "bad" artist? in the end, there's always something for everyone, for every moment.
Just be happy and enjoy the precious little things that appeals to you

>feeling the need to be "good" at judging something subjective

Music is subjective, you dumb fucking retards. Get a grip already. Your opinions mean jack shit.
