How can anyone call this avant garde/art rock when the lyrics are literally the same as One Direction?

Who the fuck calls it that

this album is critically acclaimed and lauded as one of the greatest rock and roll albums of all time

OP literally listens to One Direction wew

>rock and roll
it's pop

it's solidly pop it's not art-rock or avant garde at all

what it did for *music* is crazy

as for the lyrics, they represented sincerity and plainness in an era obsessed with esotericism, making it counter-counterculture
predating what we know today as "new sincerity"

check out the 33 1/3 about SMiLE, it goes into details about a lot of the Beach Boys lyrics

check out the

disregard the second "check out the," i'm fucking gay

at the time time was definitely avant garde

only people with no musical knowledge would call it that cause they dont know what either of those terms mean.

Not really man this was pop music played on the radio. Innovative sure but it's not that challenging.

its pop with just a hint of psychedelic

ok but besides it being revolutionary for its time, its pretty dated.

idk how anyone can find enjoyment listening to this trite

...

this guy

>tfw had a fight with the girl I liked because she thought the Beach Boys were "too earnest"
>played Caroline, No
>She laughed
>her name was Caroline

>lyrics
yeah the lyrics on lets go away for awhile and pet sounds are so awful

you can say that about ANY album older than 5 years. Try again

Rock and roll is pop, don't be obtuse.

Much of the acclaim of Pet Sounds has to do with Brian's "reclusive genius" image, as well as the unusual nature of the composition and recording. It's well documented that Wilson was an unusual soul, hearing sounds in his head and struggling to re-re-re-re-rehearse with the Wrecking Crew until they got it right. His use of atypical instrumentation (bike horns, sleigh bells, dogs, out-of-tune instruments) to achieve gorgeous melodies was unheard of. He's probably one of (if not the) most talented pop musicians of all time, even if he was overshadowed by the Beatles.

The compositions themselves are impressive as well.

The SMiLE Sessions (or any SMiLE version you prefer best) is his magnum opus, however.

Let's see an analysis of the music then.

It really isn't. The content of the music is superb, the mixing is satisfactory, and the lyrical themes are arguably still entirely relevant.

Most people don't turn their nose at good craftsmanship simply because it doesn't fit their pre-rendered posturing.

she thought they were "too earnest"?
what does that even mean

gay weeb name, but great post

pet sounds is one of those albums whose detractors have literally no ground to stand on

>its pretty dated.
Yeah it's fucking half a century old. Being dated isn't inherently bad.
