How do I into indie rock?

How do I into indie rock?

What are the essential albums and bands in the genres? What are the best indie records of the 00s?

Pick related and ITAOTS are two of the most influential and important indie rock albums of the last 20 years. Check em both out.

if you're going to listen to indie rock you should really focus on the late 80's and 90s, it has been mostly pretty boring in the 21st century

Will do, thamks
Yeah, that's what I figured, I guess I'm not really missing anything

...

Listen to everything Guided by Voices ever did. But start with Bee Thousand.

An often forgotten classic.

Indie Rock is not really a genre, it kinda is what is the limbo between popular and underground. There's definitely a correlation in terms of how these artists handle their careers, but that's no specific factors in terms of music, sometimes Indie Rock means just straight out Punk, sometimes it's more Pop Rock and (in the last 6 years) have move toward a more psychedelic sound.

>The Strokes - Is This It
>Vampire Weekend - Contra
>Arcade Fire - Funeral, The Suburbs
>Beck - Sea Change
>Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica
>White Stripes - Elephant
>Tame Impala - Currents
>Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

That should get you started.

>Funeral
> Is this it?
>ITAOTS
>Halcyon Digest
>Vampire Weekend s/t
some really good 00s and 10s indie rock

what everyone else posted. But also:
Pixies - Doolittle
The Strokes - Is This It
Modest Mouse - Lonesome Crowded West
Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted
Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me
Beat Happening - s/t

Forgot to add Bon Iver and MGMT

I would replace Contra with MVOTC and TM&A with The Lonesome Crowded West. Also
>Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
>Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial, Twin Fantasy

Essential Indie-psych

>Car Seat Headrest

Teens of Denial is undoubtedly the best indie rock record of the year.

(adding to what others already posted) Listen to post-britpop Blur, The Libertines, the first three Arctic Monkeys albums (and the 2004 demos), Stone Roses (they are a little bit older than the other bands, they are basically the biggest influence to the UK Indie Rock scene), Franz Ferdinand (first 2 albums).

Yeah, Car Seat Headrest is skyrocketing into essential indie rock ala Arcade Fire in 2005 (but with a back catalogue of great music too).

Arcade Fire - Funeral
Modest Mouse - everything before We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - s/t
The Strokes - Is This It?
Interpol - Turn On the Bright Lights
Built to Spill - Perfect From Now On
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted

those are just some essentials that I can think of off the top of my head

We need to make an essential Indie Rock (one for the 90's other for the 00's) chart.

Arctic Monkeys
The Strokes
Tame Impala (last album is a lot poppier)
Kaiser Chiefs
The Hives
Phoenix
The Wombats
Foster The People

>Cred Forumstants unironically offering "indie rock" recs

Some mid-late 80's SST stuff like Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, Minutemen, and Hüsker Dü should give you a good idea about the genre's roots

The Wrens - Meadowlands is the shit m8

Can you fucking millenials do anything without group validation? "How do I start listening to music?" Seriously? You fucking jump in and listen to some shit. Simple. Jesus fucking christ. -GENX

I know, Im so sick of Cred Forums helping people find music

Is this Indie?

this thread is giving me nostalgic feelings

I'd say 90's indie rock is the best
>guided by voices
>built to spill
>sparklehorse
>sebadoh
>flaming lips' early albums
>sleater kinney
