The point of these threads; is to discourage people from looking for new music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums everyone else ITT likes too. Many of us already listen to the same old shit daily, these people are in it to circlejerk by rating dicks on discord, or just to shove theirs down everyone's throats.
Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition >experimental hip hop
Reminiscient of XXX, this album’s lyrical themes follow well tread ground for Brown, balancing braggadocious bars with introspective social commentary, often in the same song. This adds up to some humorous, usually self-aware hypocrisy, both singing the praises of his hedonism and warning his fans not to live the same way as him, to varying levels of success. Though I love a good self fellating boast track (“Really Doe” featuring living legends Kendrick Lamar and Earl Swearshirt), hearing Danny yelp out another line about tiddies or describing how her pussy be gets tiring when he does it about 4 times per song.
What really makes this album stand out is the absolutely off the wall production. Right off the bat, “The Downward Spiral” uses an unhinged slide guitar riff and a staggering jazz beat to conjure images of Danny locked in a bedroom for weeks on end, unable to stay lucid long enough to even dress himself properly, and it sounds like no conventional hip hop beat I’ve ever heard. Though the album picks up the pace from here on, the same unconventional beatcraft permeates many of the other tracks, such as the heavily edited female voice sample that serves as the backbone for “Lost” or the bombastic horns on the highlight “Ain’t It Funny” and “Golddust”, which truly evoke the eponymous Exhibition of Atrocities that Danny leads us through on this album.
Other highlights include the tribal party anthem “Dance in the Water”, and the paranoid pulse of “Today”.
Overall: Danny delivers a great collection of drug induced euphoria, paranoia, and dysphoria. If you cut a few of the flatter songs out, this would be a contender for one of my favourite hip hop albums of the year, but the consistent highlights and top tier production do more than enough to warrant some future listening.

you should listen to Mingus asap It's not really my thing, but it's ok so far. Interesting country influences
Sudden Death - Suddenly ... (1995) >heavy psych, hard rock
Good enough heavy psych, does what you'd expect but rarely does anything to astound. Works well in it's more overdriven, heavy moments (it's a heavy psych album, what the fuck else would you expect?), but the cleaner, more atmospheric bits try hard to evoke a spooky atmosphere but end up failing and becoming uninteresting gateways to the songs that actually matter. The vocalist is also a bit of an issue, he's actually really good in the cleaner portions, ending up being pretty much the only noteworthy part of them, but his clean voice clashes heavily with the distorted guitars and pounding drums. Check it out if you like this kind of music, it's nothing special but it gets the job done decently enough
The dictionary definition of MOR. It's what happens when you take the wit out of a Dylan album, the experimentation out of a Buckley album, the passion out of a Neil Young album, the jangle of a Byrds album, it's a standard singer/songwriter album through and through, and frankly this isn't a bad thing. It's perfect for what it tries to accomplish, Winchester's voice is nice, the country elements are executed tastefully, and the songs are decently catchy. This issue is that it's just not at all memorable, and it's a style of music that's been done better by dozens of other albums. There's nothing objectionable here, at all, there's just nothing of note either.

>Venetian Snares - Doll Doll Doll I liked the dark grimy atmosphere of the album, but it honestly hurt to listen to after a while. I kept having to turn the volume down and my ears were ringing a bit after. It was cool how all of these sounds came out of nowhere on syncopated beats while still maintaining a steady rhythm. 6/10
>Mikey Dread - WWIII This was so laid back and fun to groove too. I can't say i've listened to any reggae at all because i had an image in my head that it was all bad. Lyrically this album didn't do much for me because it consisted of a bunch of "why can't we all just get along" which is what i picture every album in the genre is about. The instrumental stuff was just so feel good that i ended up really liking it. 7/10
∆3 triangle moves on
Brandon Sullivan
A lot of reggae is very political actually. And although it can appear artists take a more laid back, "why can't we be friends?" approach to the way of transmitting those messages, I feel it is more the general mood of the music that reinforces those misconceptions. The concept of "Babylon" for example is a heavily reoccurring subject in reggae music. It is an overarching term for systematic state and police oppression of the working class people in Jamaica. WWIII does have a lot laid back songs about praising Jah and stuff(the opener is literally just shouting out to different dub engineers). The lyrics deal a lot with the impending nuclear crisis of the time (obvs), government oppression, the corruption of capitalism, and the growth of commercialism.
Jason Long
Nicely put. I was about to say the same thing but you summed it up quite nicely.
What're your favorite reggae albums by the way? Seems like you're pretty heavy into the genre... and I've mostly heard stuff by a few big names.
Ryder Young
I'm mostly into dub, but I've been steadily trying to explore more roots and rocksteady over the past several months. My top several albums would be: Keith Hudson and Soul Syndicate - Nuh Skin Up Dadawah - Peace and Love Dr. Alimantado - Best Dressed Chicken in Town Mikey Dread - WWIII Scientist - Scientist Meets the Space Invaders King Tubby - Dub from the Roots
Justin Vernon is an incredibly solid songwriter, no matter which project he is working on, and he has played it safe with his Bon Iver project and Volcano Choir for the most part. With "22, Infinity" he seems to be reaching out with sonic experimentalism augmenting his largely well-written pieces. Unfortunately, whatever he is grasping for seems to slip through his fingers and as a result "22, Infinity" feels aimless and loses half its cuts in the crossfire.
The album is the best when Vernon tones down his instincts to be ridiculous on the central three tracks (`God` through `T`) and later on `Circle`. Not to say that his experimentation was a complete failure- `Deathbreast` very much works as a composition and makes great use of the chaos he seems to want to juxtapose with his pieces' usual serenity.
I quite liked exactly half the album (as noted above), unfortunately with 5/10 of the tracks fizzling out- especially the utterly pathetic `Creeks`- I can't really say I like this album.
BAD
Thomas Hughes
oh and my next rec is Gong - Camembert Electrique
Cameron Morris
Nice, thanks man! Haven't heard any of these. Definitely adding them to my backlog and listening when I finish my current chart.

Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady I JUST DON'T GET IT. This just doesn't make sense, I mean it's not terrible, but it's not good either. I know it's supposed to be experimental, improvised, avant garde, etc. but it DOESNT MAKE SENSE. NO ONE HERE (who I have in my rym friends list so pretty much all of you) HAS RATED THIS BELOW A 4 ON RYM AND I JUST DON'T GET IT. I can maybe see a 3.5 but a 4+? That just seems unheard of. How does it make you feel anything? Hanatarash made me feel more and it was just a bunch of Japs screaming and breaking shit. Hell, TIMELESS made me feel more and it's nothing but overdrawnout pretentious drum n bass. That's the album's biggest fault, the only thing you feel from Black Saint is confused after expecting so much more. I'm gonna take Dog's advice and just wait for a while and then try it again.
The Rippingtons - Moonlighting I know this is gonna hurt a lot of feelings. Especially after what I said about the highly avant, experimental, improvisational Charles Mingus.
Smooth Jazz is good.
This was such a better time than Mingus, I felt relaxed and yet invigorated, I had so much fun listening to this album. I don't know how his solo work fares, but Kenny G did a good job on this! Everything is beautifully layered and there are so many great moments throughout this album. I never doubted it while listening to it, something I struggle with a lot where I wonder "are they going to mess up here?" "Will this drag out for too long?" Etc.. That never happened here because I kept being swept off my feet. This album was such a joy to listen to and I feel like it will get better with time. Who says jazz needs to be avant or experimental? Keep your anxious tapes of field recordings overlayed with an old, frail man randomly playing a soulful sad piano, I'll be relaxing to SMOOTH JAZZ.
Thomas Stewart

I'm a big dummmy >Shakti With John McLaughlin Very good though still somewhat below natural elements, where they get into a studio and really work to get the best sound in smaller doses. This is instead a live recording with two main pieces reaching almost 20 and 30 minutes. They still deliver some very impressively fast and accurate playing and you can feel they're pulling out a great show, but nonetheless has a few lows where the music doesn't feel too focused: some parts where it's mostly the drums improvising and where some of the members attempt something to fill the space but don't really feel like they know where to go. In contrast, the highs in this record are really high as well.

Yeah, give it another try then. I listened to it a bit more than two years ago and I thought it was okay. Then a month after or so I gave it another listen and started to really like it and on.
Three Trapped Tigers - Silent Earthling >math rock, post rock
This was recommended to me by my brother who described it as a fusion of ASIWYFA’s sugar-rush guitar explosions and the harsh, surgical speed-electronics of Squarepusher’s recent albums. If that sounds like fun to you, then definitely give this a listen. Many of the (all instrumental) tracks on this album come off as fun as hell jam sessions, clearly not set on blowing you away with songwriting or atmosphere, but rather with soaring synth lines, triumphant riffs, drum virtuosity, and - dare I say it - ***crescendos***.
Yes, the band likes starting quiet and ending loud. Take for example “Engrams” which starts off with a simple looping chord progression, slowly adding 80s synths and rhythm guitars before finally introducing a thick bass synth and a Zach Hill-esque snare drum line at around the 2 minute mark, before building up to full synth nirvana, complete with chorus vocals and “the same synth line as earlier but played over way more instrumentation to make a really epic sounding coda”. Sure, the formula of just adding more and more instrumental complexity over the course of 5 minutes might be old in itself, but TTT manages to do it with enough melodic and rhythmic enthusiasm that it really makes you forget how simple the volume/time graph is.
Eli Price
The band keeps the backbones of these jams diverse enough over the album’s 50 minute runtime, such as the swaggering “Tekkers” that starts with an Autechre-channeling IDM beat before moving into some reverb drenched synth-tar grooving, or “Kraken”, which builds itself patiently around a lumbering bassline. Granted, the climaxes of each song sound pretty similar to one another, which is a bit of a gripe I have with the album, but its really easy to just sit back and let this album take you on a neon-pixelated roller coaster ride with it.
Overall: Fun as fuck. I’d kill to be in a band that gets as much enjoyment out of playing music as this band seems to have. Until then, I’ll settle for staring at it in wonder.

>Oranssi Pazuzu - Värähtelijä They nailed meshing black metal with psychedelic rock. The result is a jaw-dropping album full of great ideas. I've heard they've been namedropping Swans in interviews and it's not hard to see why since there is a lot of similarities on how they let the song expands and progress. Most probably one of the most essential metal albums in the last few years. 8/10
>The Dead C - Trouble I found it less challenging than the other Dead C album that I listened to (The White House) but by no means it is less noisy and unforgiving. This album consists of 5 more or less long noisy jams. The tracks have no beginning or end. They start as if the band has been playing for a long time already and they stop abruptly. The music is basically a dialogue of distorted guitars and dry sounding drums. It's messy and it seems that there's no aim but it's not completely without structure. 7/10
>The Dwarfs of East Agouza - Bes A wacky eastern psych jam in the pure style of the Sun City Girls. Too bad that it seems to be meandering most of the time. A lot of tracks, especially the first one, sounds like the soundtrack of a N64 video game taking place in a jungle. The last track goes full improv. 6/10
>M. Sage - Rife w/ Typo If you like Since I Left You or OPN maybe listen to this album of Orange Milk fashioned plunderphonics with jazz sample. It's enjoyable for the first few song but then it starts to lose momentum because the tracks are extremely repetitive. 5/10

Well, the rip I downloaded is fucking horrendous (/so/ much surface noise a few tracks become unlistenable), so that probably hindered my enjoyment of this album a little bit, but I can definitely still make out that this album is pretty corny and it really awkwardly juxtaposes subtle, sensitive singer/songwriter music with bombastic orchestral music. The guy-and-his-guitar singer/songwriter sound is actually really nice, a bit generic, but nice. The orchestral music, on the other hand, is totally cheesy and over the top. It absolutely sounds like the music to a rejected James Bond film, but that doesn't exactly make for a good listening experience. Pretty solid, but spotty.

I just found it boooooring. Lacks energy entirely, sounds dead to me. It is not terrible but just offensively meh.
Landon Parker
I will agree with this, pixies need to up the energy and bring back the reverb-y vocals. One thing that bothers me about Head Carrier is how clean the vocals sound
Aaron Anderson
anyone else really excited for this? Everywhere At The End of Time was great imo
Landon Jenkins
Why is the riff to Acchi so good?
Juan Foster
wait
>featuring sounds from the journey The Caretaker will make after being diagnosed as having early onset dementia
does Leyland Kirby actually have dementia then?
Zachary Richardson
right? I love it so much.
Caleb Hughes
that album is amazing, "back, baby" is incredible
Xavier Nguyen
I enjoyed that first installment at first, but subsequent listens weren't as engaging. Feels kind of like a half-hearted retreading of An Empty Bliss. But I'm willing to wait for the entire project to properly judge it.
We've been over this in daily before. No, the character "The Caretaker" will have dementia, which is how Kirby's ending the Caretaker project. I think he's being deliberately confusing there, but in interviews he's been pretty explicit.
Tyler Cooper
oh
I was thinking, thats some real fucking dedication to your art, making a 6 part project chronicling your own descent into mental illness over the course of 3 years.
Still, interesting idea. I wonder if he'll continue making music after The Caretaker is over.
Charles Cooper
this is some serious shit right here
Kayden Martinez
thanks?
honestly i cant tell if thats positive or negative

>The Anomalies of Artificial Origin -Abominable Putridity
The album is good slam death metal, but the abuse of tempo changes make it sound like a Frankenstein monster. The pig squeal is well made and fitting but as usual I don't really like lyrics I can't understand. Last thing, the album didn't really go anywhere (but I guess it's the genre's fault) but the rythms and the drums are sick.
6.5/10

04/10 - Tycho "Epoch" Listens: 2 Choice: (they all sound the same, Glider, I guess)
Tycho releases yet another album of excellent background music. It's the kind of stuff that would be fun to see live in a packed venue, and works great while you are doing some long duration task where your concentration can afford some background noise, but it doesn't stand up as a recording otherwise.
That said, Epoch is certainly his best since Dive, and possibly better. I might be able to give a better review if I could remember a single track from any of his albums.
BAD
Christopher Gray
I hope so
Ayden Morris
Black Flag - Damaged Ya, it cool. I wouldn't exactly call it the specimen of diversity though.
Grouper - Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill Eh idk. Grouper has a certain charm to her, I can't really see it here. This sounds less straightforward than Ruins, for instance, I guess more skill has been applied, but it's vapid and diluted, and at least Ruins expresses something more substantial.
Levi Young
he probably will but not under the Caretaker name, maybe as Leyland Kirby or a different pseudonym
Noah Hughes
my next chart :)

Where can I get the october calendar template from?
Benjamin Stewart
For this relisten chart I picked a lot of meme albums I never rated, but listened to already, bc it's time to rate them I guess. 1/4 is recs from daily I am relistening and maybe reevaluating.
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures A good thing to introduce you not only to post-punk, but music in general. Although I guess if one managed to avoid this meme, it still can be appreciated, even if you're no novice anymore. I am glad this thing exists, though its charm slowly fades for me over time.
Black Rain - Dark Pool Industrial techno tends to be quite similar and repetitive. This one isn't. The label proves once again to be the tastemaker in underground dark electronic music, which honestly usually tends to be flooded with lotsa and lotsa weak and unmemorable stuff. The only shortcoming for me were the vocals here. While being p great they don't quite express the necessary ethereal vibe they intended to, I feel like this could be done in a slightly different way. Some tracks were instantly catchy for me (like "Night in New Chiang Saen"), some I only started to dig after several listens ("Xibalba Road Metamorph", "Watering Hole"), but this is definitely one of the best representatives in a p mediocre genre so far.
Hunter Anderson
might listen to some music today
Noah Murphy
there are two tens and various nines on that chart, have fun
Dominic Sanders
Make sure you get the two disk version of Can Am Des Puig off slsk. It was originally sold as one LP back in the original pressing because a double LP and a hardcover book was too expensive, but it was always meant to be a two part album.
The Youtube version is especially bad, because it's only the first disk and it lacks multiple songs on top of that.
Kayden Baker
sure

I've been a /daily/ lurker for a while, so I thought I might as well get a trip and do one of these. I'll get to today's album later, so here's a write up of yesterday's:
Michael Pisaro and Taku Sugimoto - 2 Seconds/B Minor/Wave Onkyo-kei and its related genres are a group of music that I usually don't enjoy, but this album really clicked with me. The varied sounds and instruments that show up on here provide a really interesting musical experience in it's three long form tracks. If you're looking to get into Onkyo, this might be a good gateway album. I will say that the first track is a bit long for my tastes, but the second two definitely make up for it. I especially love the way the music meshes it's way into the actual environment around you, something I feel was intentional. A solid 7/10.
Landon Ramirez
Welcome!
>Yeti >The Dreaming >Koko >Swans Are Dead
Good stuff.
Ayden Martinez
yeah, i'm excited to get to those, this chart is full of essential stuff (so I've heard) that I never got around to
Kevin Howard
Should /daily/ move to because the general is very important?
Landon Kelly
>Only now listening to 77 Live Wowee
But fuck yeah CCTV. Listen to that EP sooner rather than later--it's short and the last song is A+. Also I see the last row is the Drop drone zone Feel like I recognize your trip from somewhere. Did you trip here for a day or something? Also Onkyo is probably the most hit-or-miss genre for me. I would usually say I don't like the whole of it, but then I'll find one that just really works. why
Gavin Sullivan
nah, this is my first trip i've ever used, but i'm sure turbo-pleb isn't the rarest name of all time
Aiden Torres
Hype You got some really good psych rock on there
Joshua Collins
Ricardo Villalobos - Fizheuer Zieheuer If this would have been a single track, it would have been p good. Being as long as it is it's almost annoying.
Basic Channel - Quadrant Dub This is mostly repetition as well, but it got that more or less gradual flow ans soothing atmosphere that makes it tolerable enough.
Brandon Carter
:{}
Ryan Brooks
welcome aboard then That's a common and pretty fair complaint levied against Fizheuer, it's very skeletal and long and honestly not for everyone. Even I can get bored of the second track on some listens.
However, I highly recommend, as per my own experience with Basic Channel, relistening to Quadrant Dub later--whether it be a few days or a few months.
Eli Phillips
alright, back in no time
Mgła - Groza I'm a big fan of black metal, and I plan to dive into the especially dark shit once it gets cold out, but for now I'm diving into some melodic stuff. I listened to Mgła's latest release when it came out and enjoyed it, but never got into their back catalog until now. Being their debut record, this album lacks a lot of the progression and creativity their latest has, but still has some great sounds. The opener and second track are especially interesting, meshing classic black metal tremolo and heavy chugs together in a really cool way.
This album struggles toward the end, with a lot of motifs repeating themselves with very little distinction. Track three was a genuine struggle, it was just so dull. I will say that the final moments of track four have some really cool, gentle riffs that the tie the album together nicely. However, I can't say that I could see myself revisiting this album, as Mgła's later material is pretty much objectively more interesting and well made.
5/10

Get out while you can
Wyatt Jenkins
lot of good albums here, paying keen attention to Rodan, Ulver, Pavement and Bardo Pond
If you don't pan the shit out of Brainbombs we can't be friends no more

>Hilary Hahn Plays Bach The last movement from the second partita was quite good, as well as the third sonata. Because of the length I feel that the ideas have more time to develop and I have an easier time getting into them, whereas most of the stuff from the third partita ends before I can even wrap my puny head around it. Would like to give more listens to this and maybe see it grow on me.
Also if anybody has any nice harp music hit me up. No Joanna Newsom.
Ryan Hernandez
On a scale of 1 to pretentious, how bad of an idea is this?
Justin Evans
cool: murmuüre neu! wlwh maybe black antlers maybe machine gun, it's a little small eh: the rest
Luis Harris
Honestly, the word pretentious is so misused that it needs deleting from the English language. "Pretentious" is NEVER anything more than a knee-jerk reaction out of insecurity towards the underlying knowledge that you don't understand something. And what a fucking ridiculous conclusion to draw that the artist was simply posturing, just because you're ignorant. In fact, calling someone pretentious puts the accuser in the position of the arbiter of all taste, which is itself pretentious. Go figure. Anyone who uses that word in sincerity always has far more unearned hubris than the people they're attacking.
Charles Barnes
good pasta.
Sebastian Nelson
>squares on shirts don't do this Can, NEU, etc. are better

Good albums and good rating system familia, welcome!
Ian Evans
He isn't calling the artists pretentious, he's asking if wearing all these tshirts with "obscure" bands on them is pretentious.
