don't let things like job, money or a gf define your life/life quality. one good friend is enough you need to have a happy life, the rest is up to you. make experiences, create memories. travel to nice places, get educated, be the best person you can be.
no gf here either, but since i started doing stuff anyway, although alone, my life has been getting better.

Quick query, so many times I get ADSL customers with issues and the first thing they say is "NBN is coming", I'm like 90% sure that some of those techs (the ones installing the infrastructure) accidentally fuck up some peoples lines. Can you confirm this at all? I'm just curious haha
Sales rep for residential solar
Between $10-30k per quarter depending on how much I'm busting my ass
If you have no education and can learn how to successfully break away from your social retardedness, do go into sales. Besides dealing drugs it's the quickest way for guys under 30 to get their hands on some life-changing money. I still browse Cred Forums and get high and be lazy and shit but I bust ass for a week and it can allow me to sit on my ass for 2-3 months. Ye can vouch for this. People that can't 'find jobs' usually just don't want to go 'low' and do door to door sales and shit like that. There's ALWAYS that stuff hiring, and if you're good you'll make money, and at the very least get some experience

Don't take a gap year. It's easy to find a chem job after school. It's just hard finding one you'll actually like doing the work. Most likely you'll start doing quality control or analytical chem if you go into the industry with a BS in chem
Fuck, that's true. I forgot other countries used Dollars.

Was earning a PhD, was 4 years in and my research was still going nowhere. I made the mistake of joining a brand new lab and was the first batch of grad students for a new professor. It was super ambitious protein design work trying to re-engineer the purpose of enzymes. It all worked in the molecular simulations but never worked in the real world. After 4 years it still looked like I had 4 years to go to get my PhD. My options were switch labs and start over from square 1 or get my master's degree by writing a short paper over my failed research. I took the masters.
Worked at home depot for almost a year just so I could survive while searching for a real job using my masters. Finally got a job at this biotech company starting at about 35K. I've done really well at the company over the past 2.5 years and optimized a lot of their work and gotten 3 raises which is how I'm now at 50K.

I was sick of it. Working 80 hours a week in a windowless lab, GF left me because I was doing research all the time. Nothing worked. The winters were the worst. Get to the lab before sunrise, work all day with no windows, leave after sunset. Not seeing the sun for a week at a time fucks with your hormones. I was getting seriously depressed and just needed to get the fuck out of there.

That part sounds shitty and research does take your life over. During my masters I was in my lab like 7days a week but 4years in man. Sounds like you only had the thesis and dissertation left. Once you start writing your thesis, you could stop going to lab

I call bullshit on that, what company do you work for? I'm currently a third computer engineering student and that sounds a bit ridiculous, do you have a master degree?
My committee didn't want a thesis on failed experiments. My thesis basically would have been "Molecular simulations are bullshit".
I could have stuck it out but I don't regret leaving. I should have done mechanical engineering. I was torn between molecular biology and mechanical engineering when I was a freshman. I went with biology because I figured it was a new and upcoming field that would grow.
But at my biotech job I have now I'm the expert on all the robotics we work with and have been able to almost double the throughput of the lab by optimizing all the robotics so much. I'm honestly more of a mechanical engineer/robotics programmer than a molecular biologist. But the biology background is what lets me know how to optimize everything. I have cut back the waste and improved the speed on all the reactions we do. It's a good fit for my skill set and I think I'll be getting another raise soon. I'm saving the company several times my salary every year in the efficiency improvements I'm making.
They have sent me to Europe twice this year to research new robotic systems. So that is a perk. Been to Ireland, Germany, and Switzerland all paid for by the company, and that's just in 2016.

I do philosophy because I enjoy it and am relatively good at it. The career path, even for someone with a top degree like mine, is still really rocky and unstable.
Law allows me to make fuck you money, with relative stability, and I can still read and write philosophy on my own time.
i do commercial imagery for companies selling property or needing to gather data. i also co-run the company.
im also working on an app (unrelated, business - I have an MBA) that when it hits the market i should be a gazillionaire by my estimations.
Yeah considering I was borderline suicidal when I was "dropping out" of the PhD program, broke, and my GF of 3 years had just dumped me for another guy because I was never around. So compared to that everything is amazing now.
High School PE Teacher
130K a year
I work at a private high school in one of the richest counties in the US. The student tuition is more than what the average American makes in a year.
My benefits: all doctors visits and emergency room stays are a 10$ copay, 2 weeks of vacation a year on bid basis with seniority through local teamsters, holiday bonus, 10 hours of pay per holiday (the 8 big ones), sick days, personal days, union rep with grievances, 401(k) matching up to 6% of total pay, pension plan, and eventual retirement. I dropped out of a computer science degree because my mentor got shot in the side of the head with an arrow.
Only for that? Where im from you can be a apprentice for anything and later studying that shit but its free anyway...
It'll get better. It's tough now, having to pay off my huge loan for flight training as well, but in 5 years time all will be ok. Hoping to be at 100k+ then.

Well good for you. Here in the States law can be a death sentence. There's a ton of lawyers who are out of practice because of the job market, plus law school is ridiculously expensive.

I'm still debating on going for a PhD
Applied to 3 schools, for this fall, 2/3 rejected me late in the game but never got any interviews. Right now I'm working in a lab at a well respected uni doing research on some shit I don't care about but will look good on apps. Not sure if it's worth doing more school tho and my current position is not a career position. So I got a year or two doing this then I got to move on

History of Philosophy and Practial Ethics are barely "analytic philosophy" in the normal dry
boring sense. I hate that shit too, but that's mostly the domain of metaphysics, metaethics, and epistemology right now.
I'm also going to be doing law in the US. The market is only rough for lawyers who didn't go to great schools. I'm not planning on going from Oxford to Joe's School O' Law in rural Missouri somewhere, I'm only applying to the top 6-7 best schools.

I dunno, I live near D.C. and the culture here is just weird. All anyone cares about is who you work for and who you know. Weirdest place I've ever lived. I could afford better but honestly it's not worth attracting golddiggers.

Nah I'm white. Actually you can do very well as a natural born American in software because you can actually get a security clearance.
Lead application developer (programmer)
my brother is on a msc ship around saipan and Guam right now
Thank you. That's encouraging to know. The experience is mostly what I'm after. I've heard nothing but grand things about the union, however, it's a far more difficult process. I might try an apprenticeship with them. The only reason I say my job is shit is due to the labor. Pic related B)
thats where i worked. norwegian cruise lines

The Volleyball and Softball coaching is where I have the most fun. The stories I could tell about our trips to the Conference and State Finals would bring you to your knees.

Nice bead user!
I hate my job. It's completely destroyed what little of a life I had. I spend more time in my car than I do anywhere else with next to no social interaction, so I talk to myself and my car most days
thatd be the ship. lots of SIU peeps on there. i thought about goign that route myself after joining the union , but again went to land based work . i think cruise ships are ok. i have friends who work on other type of ships and they get paid mroe and are happier in general

I kinda get the idea behind internship since, i dont need most of the stuff i learn in my apprenticeship at my workplace, but since most of the people i learn with are dumb as veggies you dont want them to be electricians working with high boltage and stuff after a few months therefore you have to pound it into their brains 8h a day
That's what I said.
I have great networking skills, and I'm VERY VERY good at data analysis.
But, I'm an engineer in title only for now. However, that title looks really good on a resume and I get a LOT of exposure to different types of engineering and process because my lab is right in the middle of all of it.
I happened to find a company with a need for 1 additional person in their tiny lab. We run a staff of maybe 8 people in the lab who are responsible for the support of a company that employs 5000... And I'm the chemist. Which is scary when shit goes wrong and you're tasked with identifying the issue.
If this does anything for you, in an average work week I analyze with/maintain: FTIR, qFTIR, TGA, DSC, STD, DMA, GC, IC, py-GCMS, UV-VIS, and a variety of auto-titrators, oh, and don't forget AAS. SO much flame. We'll have an ICP-OES within six months as well... I feel like sherlock holmes most days trying to track down the sources of contamination, identify the contaminants, and engage process engineers to resolve issues.
