The system is also just broken. What do you do in areas with hundreds of homeless people? What the fuck do you do when people say "my job is shit, I'll piss away my money on fun stuff and then move into one of those free shelters that give me 3 meals a day a bed, a TV, and even some money." The shelters will be overrun and abused.

Being homeless isn't a crime. You can't throw people in jail because "you don't want to work for the government".

Utah used old abandoned hotels for this, made the occupants responsible for its care and upkeep. It's working quite well.

Actually Utah has some of the highest rates of charitable giving per capita as well. Before the state program there were lots of homelessness in the large cities. It wasn't about moving the homeless out of one area to another it was about creating self responsibility for people who had none.

The short answer is we can't because of mental disorders. Most homeless are not only poor and disease afflicted, but they have some sort of condition which prevents them from function in society. This would lead these style barracks to be filthy and violent. Hence there are homeless shelters, which are kind of like this but they don't have to work; these places are absolutely horrible.

The long answer is that the government is shit and who the fuck cares about poor people, so just let them fucking rot alive instead.

OP i've been thinking about the homeless problem too.

Did you know right now in america there are over 83 thousand homeless people? Seriously it's so sad.

What about a program that teaches them a community college level job for free and hooks them up with a job finding service that works with them to find a job and gives them housing while they're saving up to get a real home? Some of the money they earn on the job goes to pay the people paying for the housing.

I know its not a masterplan by any stretch but all good ideas start from something. We just have to keep adding on suggestions until we have a more solid idea.

Definitely something needs to be done about the drug problem some homeless people have. A rehabilitation program mixed into the housing would be a good idea

It won't do anything. I'd say 90% of those that are homeless are homeless because they're not willing to do what it takes to not be homeless. I can't remember where exactly it was done, but something very similar to this was done before. An old apartment complex was renovated and used to give the homeless in the area a place to live and they were set up with menial labor jobs. After about a month, the building was practically a shanty town and most of the inhabitants never even showed up to the jobs. It's a choice (most of the time).
