Have it, never watched it.

Mebbe someday, user.

Really though?
No country for old men is my bet.

That would be my second choice. TWBB speaks to me on a personal level though

...for me, is The Life Aquatic.

bc oldfag, and this movie perfectly represents the lives of those of us who were raised by the post-war generation thinking we would be explorers and astronauts and deep sea divers and whatever else, when at best, what we are is a bunch of fuckups who either gave up on our dreams, or pursued them to the ruin of ourselves and everyone around us, and the only thing keeping us going is a very loose grasp on reality.

Are you Rusty Venture?

Robin Hood men in tights

that was riveting

Write me a book

We're not even a quarter through the 21st century you fucking dip. No way you can pick the best yet

Idk about the BEST in the 21st century, but damn I enjoyed this movie. Top 10 for sure

Best of 20th century bro

TWBB is a masterpiece. Best of the century, possibly. NCFOM is a slightly less as good masterpiece.

Doesn't say "so far" you mongoloid

>jonny greenwood OST
>agree

>some fucking idiot falls in a hole
>nothing happens for fucking hours
>stupidass nonsensical memeline is spouted near the end

TWWB is the fucking dumbest movie ever with a shitty soundtrack and wooden acting. How anyone likes this garbage is beyond me.

it doesn't need to because the century isn't yet over

bro, everybody can smell that bait

not posting John Wick what is this

For me it's tie between Mulholland Drive and No Country for Old Men.

so hard to decide between the two, they're on par.
The tone is similar and it's funny how the oil burning on the set of There Will Be Blood ruined a days shooting for the Coen Brothers' as they were filmed in the same location

smoke a j and sit in awe

you gotta be shitting me, u liked that?

What bait? It's the fucking truth. I bet you basically slept through most of the movie and got all excited for the stupidass meme line at the end and thought LOL BEST MOVIE EVER just because of it.

yeah i liked it... there wasn't any backstory being spoonfed

Is Swiss army man any good?

please let this be bait...sounds like you have ADHD either way

LA confidential, the usual suspects, & magnolia

I think magnolia is 2000, 2001

I did not consider this initially but nevertheless
I still hold firm with TWBB. However, TDK is
easily top ten. Possibly top five.

Yeah, a lot better than I expected.

>posts 90's movies
>The Usual Suspects
I am sorry but am I the only one that finds The Usual Suspects boring asf

Heath Ledger's performance & the writing alone
are enough to qualify it on this list. The
cinematography was a bit disappointing, though.
Nolan had me excited after Following, Memento etc.

19 nein nein

Winrar

It was 1999

well done

this nigger piece of shit...

Maybe top twenty-five. No way it breaks top ten, though.
Inglorious Bastards would be a better Tarantino
selection

Giant faggot spotted.

Jackie Brown is better than this movie

no one cares
go fuck dudes on your own time, we're talkin about movies

Pretty obvious

trips of truth

Trips of fag

Too many people now days mistake noticeable acting for great acting, in regard to Ledger's performance. He was good though. The oscar should have gone to Micheal Shannon that year.
The script was your average Hollywood with a bit of nihilism.
Nolan's directing was excellent, however, seems like he peaked at his beginning with Memento which was outstanding

Wasted trips on a altright Cred Forums child.

District 9, done

fuck you , you posted no pic because you weren't even committed to your bait. This shit was wank

it is. Unfortunately, Jackie Brown was 1997

Can somebody please explain to me why this movie is so great?
>protip: it's shit
Or am I not autistic enough to "get it"

not even the best Scorsese Dicaprio collaboration

every whiny little "give me free shit now" twat of an immigrant needs to see this movie. you have to earn acceptance. it's not free.

Done

I do love this movie.

Correct answer:

The Aviator

That's because the departed isn't as good. Those oscars were makeup awards. He really should have gotten them for this one.

Life best

I would also suggest pic related

excellent but it is nothing compared to There Will Be Blood.
Gosling's silence in the film is dramatic, but tells you nothing
When Daniel Day Lewis is silent he tells you everything

You must be a neoconservacuck, there's no immigrant in existence that demands free shit

American beauty is 1999

>Watch Daniel Day-Lewis Scream and Attack People Like an Autistic Boy: The Movie

DDL is so fucking incredibly overrated.

>1999

Awww, fuck. Oh well.

First & foremost, I just want to acknowledge the fact that this thread turned out to be much more comprehensive & intelligible than I could've possibly anticipated. When it comes to your critique of Ledger's performance, you're partially right. He did, in part, only win that Oscar because of his recent passing. In contrast, he was undoubtedly the greatest on-screen Joker ever. Now, to fully appreciate the script, you have got to be a fan of Batman comics & graphic novels. It puts everything into place. Nolan's vision of Gotham was quite possibly the first & only time that the DC Universe was accurately showcased on the silver screen. When you note the writing as being slightly nihilistic, I agree; that's the beauty of it. The classic justice versus chaos conflict that is Batman & The Joker was perfectly embodied by that tone & I couldn't imagine it being any better than it was. In short, with all of that being said, I think you'd have to be a big DC fan to truly grasp & appreciate to eloquent exuberance exhibited here in this film.

>implying the the movies greatness is contingent on actors

They're cattle, brah

Still good though

AGREED

yeah well your mind is so fucked you can't even watch a film without relating it to something completely unrelated.
and they form gangs in the film as protection from discrimination, at what point are they accepted? were you even watching

...

they're much more than cattle but most undoubtedly
do not make or break a film

you know your brain is rotted to shit when you watch a film and sympathize with Bill the Butcher

Daniel Day Lewis...that guy

Fuck this boring ass movie. I love gosling but Refn tried to be way too artsy and it came off as rediculously pretentious and boring.

Psh. Movie was good, nothing special. Tom Hardy stole the show honestly.

...

...

I like this movie

My vote.

I'd give it 7.5 stars out of 10. Above average but it most certainly did not live up to expectations. By
the by, you're absolutely right. Hardy was the
focal point of the film. At any rate, I wouldn't put
this little ditty anywhere near my top ten of the century.

fuck, that movie is great

these are honest votes. dreadful. just dreadful.

Not as good as Gangs.

i fucking hate niggers too, doesn't mean i didn't love this movie

top 3 cinematography of 21st century. Overall a 8-10, not near the best

First off, I watched "Hitchcock/Truffaut" not two days ago so that's pleasantly coincidental.
And I completely agree with Hitchcock. Acting is the creative input I care least about in a film.
I was just pointing out a correlation between two performances that utilize dramatic silences and how Daniel Day Lewis pulls his off with such mastery compared to Gosling.
>Best stoic facial expression acting probably Phoenix in The Master
>More important role for all those films the outstanding cinematography

>disagreeing with Hitchcock
Opinion discarded

Gangs is great too. Haven't seen it ages, though. I fucking love matt damon's character in the departed though. You're supposed to sypathize with leo, but he's a whiney bitch who fucks a taken woman and tries to drown out his fear with drugs. Matt damon is stone cold until he begs for his life. Thats why I love this movie. So much grey area in my opinion. Also, baldwin, walberg, and jack kill it. Great cast. Great story. Classic ending.

>Make up awards I would have given you credit, but fuck that response.
He can't even keep his Irish accent consistent
>Not as cringy as the bitch
I mean check out The Aviator
There weren't only two collaborations between them, you shit

couldn't agree more OP, i'm with you

Phoenix is a real shithead, give me a ring the next time he doesn't play a pathetic loser

There will be blood/No Country for Old Men,
>2007 was a great year for movies

Dont drink his milkshake

y'all my niggas too

i'm pleasantly surprised with this thread

whats the most you've lost on a coin toss

I disagree. More investment should be made in interesting camera movement than that 70mm, two ton film format nonsense

C'mon though imagine the pressure the character would be under. That's the whole thing that drives his performance.
And you wouldn't take something to relived the headaches and insomnia?
>st8 edginess

Nolan's films are psuedointellectual, get with it

This is my choice.

Walk the Line
Anyway who cares it's about how much you can work with a character.
If a degenerate gives you more to work with that's fine.
Perfectly polished characters are boring to watch

Which one TWBB or The master.
Anyway we need less movement in modern films Paul Thomas Anderson is using a measured and beautiful style of directing that was popular before editing gave people ADHD

No, I understand it, I just don't like it. I just like damon's cool preffesionalism. Granted, he's been a rat longer so it's probably not as stressful to him.

>Perfectly polished character
Huh? Who said that? You must be kidding. Phoenix is embarrassing to watch. The pinnacle was as a pussy who falls in love with mac

I saw them both the same day. Went to a second theater across town for TWBB. It was an epic night for movie greatness.

Didn't say editing, I said camera movement, on a device, like a dolly not handheld. The 70mm camera is two tons and thus very boringly barely moving, hateful eight suffered the same way

Are you kidding? Inglourious bastards was dry as fuck and over hyped. This movie has set a standard for westerns.

A movie you finally couldn't "tell" qt wrote.

>Tarantino
>De Palma
>Scorsese
>Spielberg
>Kubrick
also all disagree with Hitchcock. Not that they
would know anything about filmmaking.

Different user here, but I think he's a good actor. Never saw that siri movie, though. He's a weird cookie, that's for sure.

That movie was shit. Watch the last 10 minutes and be done with it.

/thread

>You think my watch would be safe on that lamp post Bill?
>Why dont you put it up there and see?
>Someday....

I love this goddamn movie

Fair enough, but saying you're the best joker isn't saying much.
And the nihilism was the best bit, no insult there. It was what set it apart from sickening hero adoring comic book films. And posed a few ethical conundrums that actually got the audience to think about their philosophy.
I did like the gritty nature of the story and the idea of what a lawless cop killing feeding frenzy would be like for a city. And how Batman has to take Harvey's wrap because of the average person dependence on hero worship and false idols.
I suppose you have to have more admiration for the DC universe to enjoy it and if you do it must have been a dream come true to see a legit drama made out of and I can respect that

Yeah you clearly didn't read what I meant by polished. I'm saying Phoenix doesn't play those characters because he has more scope and that's what makes him more interesting

This and only this
this is not only the Best film of the 21st century
but of all recorded history.
No movie past, present or future will be better then this

You must be fun at parties

>more scope
You're objectively wrong. And you probably identify with him because you're pathetic too

I am, I pretend I like whatever nonsense you like

I whole-heartedly disagree. I've a passion for films
of all kinds, but Tarantino has been my favorite
since I was ten. I've seen every single one of his
pictures countless times (particularly Pulp Fiction)
& I could tell this was his the first time I saw it. His
name's all over it. From the cinematography to the
soundtrack to the quick-witted dialogue &
everything inbetween. By the by, The Hateful
Eight was much better. The non-chronological
plot was both enticing & impressive. Django, on
the other hand, actually has a few major plot
holes. When it comes to Inglorious Bastards,
you've just no idea what you're talking about.
Christoph Waltz gave one of the best
performances of his career, QT killed the
soundtrack (per usual), Brad Pitt had a truly
unique performance & the writing was filled
with suspense & well thought out drama. An
absolute classic.

user your not even trying are you? go sit down

But it should you see, otherwise you get nit picky grammar Nazi fags such as myself calling retards out

Not as much as some people newfriend

>Tarantino
Are you being serious? Even if you don't like
the Hollywood glam that Django gives to the
traditional western, The Hateful Eight was a
masterpiece.
>De Palma
you're right but nevertheless the man has good
taste when it comes to film
>Spielberg
not anymore, but there was a time (before Jaws) that Spielberg was widely hailed as the modern
great American director
>Kubrick
but that's the point. He might've manipulated &
abused them to get what he wanted but he knew
what he wanted & he understood that what he
wanted demanded strong performances from said
actors

...

Then I just feel sorry for you.

tits

this may have very well been the first time two
people of opposing viewpoints found common
ground on Cred Forums

thank you, user. I respect your opinion as well.

You fags don't even realise what a gr8 movie this is

a grammar nazi who doesn't take context into
account is in fact not a grammar nazi lol context
is quite literally apart of traditional grammar, most
especially in American English

Everytime I scroll past this image, it looks like a dissected frog.

No I do

Stop assuming shit you faggot

i had to stare at it for a few moments but I think I
can sort of see it now. Also, this thread won't die.

You're comparing this to TWBB? please stop being 12.

I know, but my point is the increased pace of films is no good especially for the narrative.
They have technology to move a 70mm camera with counter weights and tracks and cranes, but the beauty of 70mm film is in how much you can get in the shot. Most directors who use that spec are well educated on the canon of cinema and frame the set like a classic film when shots were like works of art in and of themselves.
And the Hateful Eight is a bad example because it was like theater playing out in front of the audience...too much movement would have been unnecessary and jarring.
There was the signature 360 degree shot around a circle of people, which is about all the movement you want for a film basically consisting of dramatic conversation. What seemed boring to me was that it relied on dialogue that wasn't as sharp as previous Tarantino films Reservoir Dogs being the prime example

>h8ful 8
It had me for two hours, it's disappointing conclusion, and overall pointlessness, hampered it
>Spielberg again
Sure, I'm perfectly willing to entertain an outdated viewpoint about the most childish auteur who's ever held 100 million. Kek, as if he needs defenders

Forest Gump

After my first post I was geared up for a shit storm, but you surprised me so much with your respectable response. Even made me respect the film more seeing it from an invested DC fan's perspective.
Much respect to you too user your responses were well informed and intelligent

Best movie thread in quite awhile.

M. Buchko, you in here breh!?

i just finished watching it 10 minutes ago. It's utter bullshit.

I am simply not willing to defend Spielberg's
integrity. However, I am willing to defend Tarantino's.
I refute your claim & pose the argument that the
utter hopelessness & seemingly pointless
conclusion played in perfect part to the story arc,
i.e the civil war, manifest destiny etc. Also, let's
not disregard the fact the Ennio Morricone did an
outstanding job with the score. It's also pretty neat
that he did it due to his history scoring spaghetti
westerns (most notably Sergio Leone's).

I respect the way you see it but I disagree. It's quite noticeable that the camera is sluggish and for me that just doesn't fly. It's a myth that 70mm means shit. Be honest, doesn't Gone Girl or Only God Forgives look better, what so the wides are super wide? It's a gimmick equivalent to 3D only difference is it's a highbrow gimmick

truth

in regards to what exactly?

This movie has great cinematography and soundtrack. That's it.

I'm also going to have to say No Country For Old Men.

probably

haha jeez what I said is pretty subjective and cannot be objectively wrong.
>why so butthurt
I'm not pathetic and from what I hear he isn't in his personal life either (model, drugs, parties) not that you can ever know what a celebrity is like.
You say pathetic, but you're talking about the characters he plays. Are you one of those autistic people who can't distinguish from fiction and assume character actors are like that in real life. That is very disturbing.
And I was just calmly debating with you up until the point you made it personal and since you brought it up it suggests some real insecurity on your part.
>The type of butt hurt that comes from a girl never touching your dick... ever

Dont know if best, but for sure my favorite so far.

Those are great what about Tombstone?

>score
Good, yes

>the film itself
You're giving out too much credit. It doesn't matter who poisoned the coffee, everyone but the characters we actually trust turn out to be evil. The rambling digressions go nowhere. The flashback scene adds fuck all. It seems Tarantino is too old to make interesting work at this point. Don't get me wrong though, Inglorious Basterds is one of the best films ever

...

Get that subjectivity out of here you fucking autist

This

Fuck I forgot about that movie. One of the top three ever

Holy shit this film blew my mind. Sat there fot a for a few good minutes, just trying to process what I just watched.

It's very silly, but I thought it was amazing.

I just don't see your perspective. The good
characters turning evil also plays in part to the
hopelessness of the era & setting. That's part
of what adds to the surrealism of the film.

& yes, it is. Some fuck earlier tried to tell me that
it was a piece of trash & I damn near had an
aneurysm.

Spring Breakers.

Thats from 1994 you retard

just got chills

This

Into The Wild
Not huge into Sean Penn but goddamn it good movie 12/10

this is an dlc for Toy Story

NCFOLDMEN is my fav

You have to be subjective when casting an
opinion on film, music, video games etc.
there is, by definition, no objective way to
categorize them. If you were truly being objective, than you would have to withhold bias; which is
both a psychological & statistical impossibility.

Well if I get dubs it's No Country For Old Men

Top three AIDS faggots

Not 21st century, but who cares...

The fact that you can see my perspective means I trust your judgement in yours and you make a fair point. The Hateful 8 didn't utilize it as well as epic landscape pictures Like Laurence of Arabia and 2001 did.
And I do agree those two films were beautifully shot. It's not necessary to use it. There Will Be Blood I would assume would have been perfect but it wasn't and that's shows it's not necessary.
I appreciate that you can see all these technicalities are just gimmicks and it was around from Technicolor to today ongoing

imagine being a white girl in 2014 who went to the theater with four of her white girl friends expecting to see james franco put on the florida version of pineapple express, and instead getting treated to this introspective and borderline insulting masterpiece

It's preeeeeetty good.

you'll fall for anything Hollywood tells you is cool, won't you

Then list your top three beta fag. It's ok if you list the ones that you watched in your moms basement

It would have been glorious.

One year before the 21st century?

Boom

OP here. I'm going to abandon thread. I've got to
work in five hours & I could probably use the
sleep. Before I go, I just want you guys to know
that I very rarely post anything here. I've been
lurking since like 2008-2009 but I might only post
one or two threads a year. This thread, by far, was
the most intellectually stimulating & mature thread
I've ever been apart of. Not to mention the fact
that it was also the longest thread I've ever posted.
Anywho, I just wanted to thank you Cred Forumsros. You've
made this night surprisingly enjoyable for me.
Buenos noches.

That year was such a great year for movies. People have always had a hard on for No Country for Old Men, and it's for sure a good film, but There Will Be Blood never got the acclaim it deserved because there was so much going on that year. It's a fucking masterpiece of story telling. Another movie I don't see mentioned a lot is The Master too. Absolutely stunning performance (RIP) and story telling. I would say The Master is one of the most intellectual films I've seen... even though the whole thing about it mocking a pseudointellectual con man "sounds" cliche when you put it that way, but the psychology behind the characters and the contexts is INCREDIBLY well illustrated.

Is this movie any good? I've seen people praising it all over the internet.

fucking this

Already saw scarface

Lol, didn't even notice it was mentioned. No one I ever talk to mentions it, though people generally have positive things to say about it when I bring it up.

Barry Lyndon (Kubrick's masterpiece)
Citizen Kane
Jacob's Ladder

No wait, Forest Gump -- cliche American retard coming of age story.

There Will Be Blood bored me almost to tears. Two hours of my life I'll never get back. I know enough people who loved it that I'll just have to take your word that it was a good movie but I just didn't get the point. Can you tl;dr it for me?

Favorite gangster film of the century so far.

American Citgo, I mean Psycho.

That's Auf der Anderen Seite to you.

You're not less of a person for not enjoying it, but all you have to understand is some people enjoy a slow, deliberate, nuanced story that involves a lot of quiet dialogue and calculated silence. There Will Be Blood is not a movie you watch for "things to happen" really. Like I said, it's very slow and deliberate. Basically, it's about a guy who degenerates into greed and madness. There's nothing to like about him. The main character is, by design, completely unlikable, but generally, the viewer still becomes invested in his story. That's a very difficult trick to pull off.

>Barry Lyndon

By far some of the best cinematography of all time.
8.5/10 for the rest of the movie.

I'll give you two of three never seen Barry Lyndon good?

Upstream Color

>The main character is, by design, completely unlikable

Like the guy in Filth, I assume.

>15 hours of Tom Hanks growling alone in the woods
>Best film of the century

What?

My pick is the Last King of Scotland.

Severely underrated movie in threads like these.

It's long but as another said, great cinematography and a compelling plot. Beats out Lolita, 2001, A Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket (I'm not listing the others) for my favorite Kub film,

I may have just not been in the mood for something like that when I watched it? I couldn't stay focused but I'm not always like that. I may give it another watch at some point.

It's on my to-watch list.

It's really a character study of the bastard draining the blood of the land, to put in his own pocket, in the time when America was becoming a world super power. And the conflict he comes into with basically everyone especially the preacher, who until Daniel came along, had an religious power grip over the town.
That conflict represents the death of religion in an industrial time.
And the fucking up of the community in the pursuit of oil has slight allusions to the Iraq war.
Esentially looks at mainly negative aspects of the human condition like greed and power

if it dosent have people getting killed by sword in it its not good enough.

such a masterpiece
Also the many similarities to Scientology are fascinating

You're on the right track, but there's literally nothing redeeming about DDL's character in There Will Be Blood. He's not really "fighting" for anything like say the main character in Filth. In fact, he pretty much actively fucks over and abuses anyone he gets the chance to. Even his "family" (i.e. his deaf son) who he exploits for business appearances and which I won't say too much because of spoilers or whatever. The only thing that makes you feel good about DDLs character is some of the other completely unlikable characters in the story (e.g. paul dano).

Full metal jacket is great and I will check it out. Every now and again I get something good out of Cred Forums other than faggots shitposting about some slut they took pics of. I tip my fedora to ya faggot

I'm pretty sure PSH's character is based on Hubbard so the Scientology correlation is pretty deliberate. It's not a movie about Scientology though - it's just using that environment to tell the story of the characters. That's why no one will ever mention the relationship really because it cheapens the movie if someone were to say "Oh ya that's the movie about Scientology" because that's not the point at all

"Negotiation's over. Sentence is death."

Those are some of the worst, mildly entertaining movies of the 21st century

Girls rule. Women are funny. Get over it.

They're just random movies guy. I'm not handing out awards here. Someone complained there were very few movies being discussed in this thread. So I just dumped a shit ton of them. I can tell you 100% though Casino is in no galaxy a trash movie that is "mildly entertaining" so fuck off troll

Watched primer about a million times. Haven't really gotten into upstream color yet.

The Usual Suspects. That reveal though. I mean the cripple? Never saw it coming.

Yeah of course the similarities to Hubbard are there, subtly:
the boat
the auditing style interview
conflict with his son
tax fraud prison time
masturbation addiction
parties with adoring women

and I agree with you, the story is foremost about Eddie and his mental vulnerability and how that's exploited by PSH's character to have him in the palm of his hand. Since PTA didn't want to detract from the plot by, as you say, making it a film about Scientology he so skillfully made it a subtle framework to explore the themes of mental anguish in the story. It's there if you want to see it, but equally if you don't it doesn't effect the main point of the film.

Children of Men

don't trust cripples... Hitler had the right idea

The only thing I liked about this movie was Michael Caine. I just can't tell what everybody else sees in this film.

This is a great movie. Saw Arrival at tiff and liked it even more.

Original -- didnt even know they remade it

I didn't know opinions could be so wrong until I saw this post

The same directory remade it with Tim Roth as one of the psychos. It's been so long since I've seen the remake that I can't really say which I prefer. Probably just going to watch the two of them on two consecutive days.

The original (German version) was such a beautifully crafted film. Those extra long shots just got under my skin.
