after the cultural revolution, after deng xiaoping came to power, china opened itself to western influence, so modern chinese culture is a mishmash of somewhat confucian values and western ideals.

modern chinese culture, like the west, takes emphasis on personal satisfaction and enjoyment, whereas traditional confucianism stressed social cohesion over individual satisfaction. to get more nitty gritty, confucianism traditionally prescribed a very rigid patriarchy, some vestiges of it remain in modern china, but that patriarchy is being dismantled bit by bit by events like womens liberation.

to add to my previous post - confucianism also taught that parents and elders are to be respected and obeyed without question, but modern technology and economy showed young people that our parents and grandparents are just as fucktarded as we are, so no one really takes that seriously anymore, but still elders within a family are typically venerated and cared for
