However the transition from the 3rd to the fourth line doesn't make sense.

That would make a=0

You never decide by the variable. At the last step, divide by the coefficient, 2

(a+b)(a-b) = 0
(a+b) = 2a
(a-b) = 0
(2a)(0) = 0

Or b(0)

2a(0) =/= b(0)

They both equal zero, but in the question it simply takes away 0 from both sides to get a+b = b

But the 0 is a multiplying factor, so to get rid of it you've gotta divide both sides by zero
