The notation makes a lot of sense if you do engineering arithmetic.
I don't remember ever using W/mK, as I only took 6 months of mechanical/materials engineering. The most fucked-up unit I use regularly is watt-hours, which isn't fucked up at all even for normies.
Q: How much energy is used by a 500W load in 15 hours?
A: 500W * 15h = 7500Wh = 7.5kWh.
It's simply multiplying units together.
I personally think of watt-hours as volt-amp-hours, but that's not entirely correct nomenclature, but has some basis since a watt is one volt multiplied by one amp. Usually.

1. It is simplified for engineers. To needlessly substitute one unit (take for instance Wh) into something else just makes it so that I have to keep track of more unit symbols as I go. The trick is to use as few basic units as possible, and make all your arithmetic be based upon those units.
2. If engineering was meant to make things simple, how come computer motherboards are 10 layers thick?
