When I first jumped into it I was doing basic vanilla stuff and then started to ease into the mods. Gotta say, my favorite was definitely Thaumcraft.

I know the recent versions of FTB have "Expert Mode" which basically fucks you over on the recipes. Things that required say Iron would require Steel, forcing you refine your iron. Also a lot of cross mod gating. Making stuff require materials from Witchery, Thaumcraft, IE, that kinda stuff.
