I was born an atheist not a vampire. I don't think I'll ever grow out of this "phase" though. Well, consider that many who have had religious experiences have done so in the context of lots of meditation or prayer or fasting or physical stress or seizures or brain tumors etc. I'd speculate that any experience comparable to the ones I've had have some underlying physical basis. Maybe some can happen just randomly, I dunno. Friend of mine says they do; but I'm very suspicious.

I will say my experience put me in a weird epistemic position, since it has had lasting effects. Cognitively I still don't believe in God, but there some weird sense in which I "feel" like I do, almost as though "spirituality" (even without believing in spirits or souls) is a real psychological state or feature. It's the weirdest fucking thing for someone who's been a complete and total dick atheist for 25 years.
