The Man in The High Castle
It changed my life way back in high school.. Of course it was considered a banned book in my high school at the time.
This series is great. I wish Patrick would finish this shit so we find out how Denna dies/helps the Chandrian
This or The Stranger by Camus
>Nigger
One of my favs
Been ,planning to read some Bradbury. THis year I read Arthur C Clarke's 2001 and now I'm reading these.
Really? My teacher made it part of the curriculum and I'm glad she did.
Elvis The Novel
hey look the two most namedroppable and well-known books in the history of forever. lemme guess, your number 3 is animal farm?
The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress
Also, are the 2001 sequels worth reading?
Gödel Escher Bach
Infinite Jest
The man without qualities

Foundation is p. Good if you like Asimov's works.
...
all-time favorite, if you want something to do for the rest of your life try to remember all of the names that come up in this book
dat ending tho...
...
Not even in my top ten. The whole thing about it being a metaphor for the Russian revolution kind of ruined it for me.
fahrenheit 451 has to be the stupidest fucking book i have ever read. the message is generic and the whole paedophile undertone the main character has is stupid as fuck.
Not the guy but 2010 was pretty good but later books kind of lacked a lot. 3001 was interesting for the future cultural differences, but wasn't terribly good with much else imo.
Posting the best book.
My ex preached and preached about that book. Though I think it went over her head bit.
It's pretty weird tbh. Deutscher?
...
This.
It's great! Pretty well thought and original, specially for the time the first books were written. Many better known sci-fi works owe a lot to them.
I started with the original trilogy and then read the prequels, now I'm revisiting the OT before I go for the sequels. I was actually pleased to discover the Foundation universe connects with most of the fictional works by Asimov, as I want to read some of these too.
I agree with your points of it being generic and all, but reading it in the 9th grade for the first time, after being spoon fed nonsense, it really made a mark on me, and continues to. Not saying it's the best at all, just my personal favorite.
...
Gotta go with this.
An Arab emissary goes to Viking country and inadvertently gets picked up as the 13th (unlucky) warrior. Retelling of Beowulf.
Try Riddley Walker by Russell Hoban
This one blew my mind mind back in high school.
>TFW no qt3.14 pneumatic casual sex partner to consume Soma with.
Didn't know anyone else even knew about that book.
Only the best
I carried out my purpose: War and Peace, The Idiot, The Brothers Karamazov, Anna Karenina, and so forth. Would you believe it? Something is gained in translation; the originals are even more depressing and soporific than translations. I’m not sure what purpose Russian fiction has, but it can’t be entertainment.
-Robert A. Heinlein
I had a tough time reading this book....made me feel really dumb. Maybe i should give it another try.
Thoughts?
I have all of his books. I bought this one when I was 11, but didn't read it until I was 30 because I didn't like the opening few pages.
Really glad I waited so long (after his death, after reading his last 2 books) because it became a favorite.
Yes, My old school was a ver uptight school, and anything that didn't instill a firm belief in Jesus/America/guns was considered not suitable. They were pissed use I said "goddamn".. A few of my teachers were happy to see me reading it, but it was still banned..
You'll love reading the Robots novels then and seeing how they tie in. A lot of people don't like Asimov's style, which is fair, so I try not to overhype.
Dirac's Principles is pretty good also.
to kill a mockingbird
Randall Flagg was a savage. Movie didn't even cover 50% of the story, they ruined it just like they did with "IT".. And I'm afraid they're about to re-ruin "IT" all over again..
Ew. Derivative user is so derivative.
Why don't you post a picture of a twilight novel while you're at it.
no more adventures dear Sancho....
Yeah, I've read it a couple times.
Wow, the book that everyone in the US has to read in grade 9. You're so well read.

A love letter to capitalism.
Seriously though, read a better novel.
Mein kampf? Surprised no one's put it on here yet.
The Reapers are the Angels
Still an informative book, even if it doesn't match your world views/principles. Saying shit tier/retarded about it is equal to the saying shit tier/retard to the message that 1982 or Animal farm gives.
Its still exploring ideas and philosophies.
Malleus mallificarum
Idk how to spell that
It was terribly written. Philosophical opinions aside -just like Ayn Rand- the actual structure, narrative, etc. is piss poor.
original edition > uncut edition

Haven't trusted a New York Times best seller since I read Jim Butcher's Dresden Files.
Things that top that list seem to fit a pattern of being unimaginative and formulaic, leaving nothing to your imagination.

Favorite as well
Is Murakami any good? Keep hearing mixed reactions about him
This
also really like this
Huxley in general
See:
Philosophy is fine, but it's a terrible book. That's why I called it a love letter to capitalism. I don't hold a book's theme against it to judge its value.
I read that shit in 6th grade so classy.

Kant, Kierkegaard, Sartre, and Nietzsche are my favorites in terms of philosophy. But my all time favorite is pic related, mainly due to his pragmatism
meant to include pic.

Good taste, might want to give it a re-read soon.
My nigger. You forgot Descartes and Vulpe.

the jungle? rats in sausages?
Requires several re-readings.
do satan quads lie?
This book is fucking 10/10
For the love of fucking God, read this shit
I love Descartes but mainly in regards to his work in graphs and algebra more than philosophy, and in regards to vulpe I will admit I am severely under-read, Right now I'm reading Justine by The Marquis de Sade
Decent book, but pleb-tier philosophy

There are two kinds of people in the world.

So many other good reads in this thread as well. I'm surprised at how good Cred Forumss taste is.
as Cliche as it is Ubik is my favorite Philip K. Dick book with The Man in the High Castle coming in second.

Anything by Connelly is good shit
fuck you.
I hate that it is objectively good piece of literature and I can't hate it.
>1982
don't care if bait I cringed hard
When I was a small faggot. Now I'm older Bradbury's 451 is at the top of my list, along with anything by Moorcock. I'm quite enjoying rereading Austen, Bronte's, Hardy (oh Tess you poor lass).
I've read it 5 times. I wish more people did.
fun fact: 451 isn't even about censorship or book burning, it's more about following orders without knowing why and our obsession with technology.
I love that it solves the problem of voter apathy which seems to effect so many modern Republics/Democracies.
It's my favorite fantasy, too, user.
I really like Aristotle's Rhetoric, Marcus Aurelius's, Meditations, and the light and fire of Baal Shem Tov
Rumi is a pretty great poet as well.

marcus aurelius, how stoic
Catch-22
House of Leaves
1984
Brave New World

NO HE IS FUCKING NOT.
Don't waste your time with this author's trash. I read Norwegian Wood and I have never felt like an author so blatantly was wasting my time.
It's awkwardly fully of cliches, confusing emotionless japs, and bizarre stretches of time that have nothing to do with the greater story.
>Things I like about Catch-22
>The humor in ridiculous situations during times of war/every day life
>Things I hate about Catch-22

Stephen King used to be fucking great. The Stand, IT, and Misery were really, really good. His books of short stories are pretty strong as well. But in the last 15 or so years, it seems like he's gone for quantity over quality.
Oh. You're a douchebag. Got it.

I started reading about a year ago. No hate Bros don't have much time I also read this books to my kids. Read loved these books

Pretty much. That book was instrumental in my acceptance of the absurdity of human existence. It's pretty freeing when you stop taking everything in life so goddamn seriously and just live.
Really, I like how he was trying to school up a prince on how to be. It's a veiled hint on his inherent incompetence.
It is a pretty fun book, I enjoyed it in the fourth grade.
I've read the Chronicles of Narnia (whole series) 11 times. Brilliant in it's simplicity, and while it's full of a lot of Christian symbolism, it's pretty progressive in the attitudes it takes toward that stuff. Much more Universalist than it gets credit for.
Only Satanists read that stuff. You worship Satan don't you???
Sweet goodness it's about time Sanderson got on here
Storm light archive was decent, at least so far.
user is a hoopy frood.
My two favorites, fiction and non-fiction
He doesn't have the satanic trips to back that up.
I can definitely see that. Great read regardless, And in my opinion the three best books to read in regards to leadership are The Art of War (Sun Tzu), The Prince (Machiavelli), and On War (Von Clausewitz).
I love this book it changed my life another
Have you read kaleidoscope that's a good one by Ray Bradbury but it's just a short story
O my god I have that hitch hikers, so beautiful
The Apocalypse Watch, Robert Ludlum. Great book imo.

if u like bradbury, try the illustrated man, a collection of his short stories tied together by the idea of a man's tattoos coming to life on his skin
He's the favourite of most hipsters. Should tell you all you need to know.
Philosophy so bad it had to be published as a novel. So boring they have to pay people to read it (Ayn Ryan essay scholarship).
ok i read that in like 4th grade and it scared the shit out of me
...
Anyone who enjoys reading scifi knows about it. It's not like Heinlein is an up and coming author.
Aldous Huxley: Brave New World.
scary how accurate someone from almost a century ago predicted shit would turn out. and even more scary to think with a warning like this we're letting it happen.
Does this reflect modern best practices for C? How pissed will Linus be if you PR code in this style?
>Fahrenheit 451
My students love this book, and I pretend to love it too. But I hate it. I hate it so fucking much.

That expression. She's still pissed about the botched tit job.

Ender's Game to be honest...
Reading this as a young adult was a completely different experience from when I read it as a young kid, I never realized how excellently the author portrayed a true genius while still managing to appeal to kids who can't grasp the whole scope of the intellectual portions of the novel
Tis good. Plato and Seneca works are up there with my favourite
Totally this. You'll laugh your pants off the hero is a XVII century Cred Forumstard.
kind of advanced but a worthwhile read
I only liked the first one.
The second was too much detail about his magazine and the business side of things.
Who gives a fuck? It sealed the deal on not reading the third one
...
...
The whole series was meh, imho.
A Scanner Darkly
Catch 22
Shelter Skelter
Not the guy you're replying to, but it's definitely better than 1984. Wellllll... fuck it's hard to say. Sometimes 1984 cuts so close to the bone, you forget that Orwell was fucking predicting shit that *actually* happened and that has become so incredibly common to us by now. I don't know... I'm still going with Brave New World.
What I'm currently reading. It's shaping up to be a favorite. Been reading a lot of chrichton, king, and Arthur c Clarke lately. The gunslinger series by King is probably my faveorite.
Most overrated piece of crap I've ever read.
I fuck in love enders game and feel the same way. I want you inside of me.
...
Anyone else with me?
Don't judge me.
dandelion wine by bradbury reminds me of the time and setting of strange things as it follows a group of youths and their adventures in their small hometown. like a murderer on the loose, a time machine, and other oddities that the childish mind perceives, like a summer encapsulated in a bottle
So much this
Don't get me wrong. They're both great. Just thought brave new world was slightly better. And it's OK to enjoy multiple books.
Et in Arcadia ego.
Such a good fucking book
Shame the rest of the books sucked. First one was fantastic, but felt more like a lucky hit after reading the rest.
Not me, user. Apart from being boring as all fuck, wasn't he like...a mile from his friend's house? Kek
But to each his own. I'm not one to judge the taste of others, and if you're reading, reading anything at all, then you're my kind of faggot.
crime and punishment was one of my favs though
Joe Haldeman
I agree
>Newberry medal
It's not too pretentious is it?
Sheit, I haven't read anything since high school, but this book is something that formed me in to myself today.
I don't see the appeal. It takes forever to go nowhere. Only good part was the cop not giving a shit about the murder because he knew the guy was a pussy and would crumble on his own.
Just finished reading this for the second time.
The Unbearable Lightness of Being
1984 is to brave new world as finding nemo is to shark tale
Did you read it in high school? Like, as a class or something? If so, then that's cool as hell. As a high school English teacher, I'd like to think some of the books I teach to my students will leave a lasting impression. I'm probably fooling myself though.
References Don't Quixote
just being able to make it through one of these novels instantly increases your vocabulary level by several billion
This (which you guys probably don't know about) or catcher in the rye. Loved the symbolism in that one.
Fucking autocorrect! *Don
I did read it in high school, AP English - it was boring as fuck - but the whole movement of transcendentalism spoke to me. It conflicts heavily with my Severe Depression and Chronic pain though...
I really enjoyed it. Don't remember how I found it, since I've never heard of the author of the book before then, but no regrets. Would recommend to others.
I would agree, I got about 3 after and gave up barely even remember them tbh. This book made such an impression on me when I was a kid. How did you like the movie? I actually thought it was a decent short portrayal of the book and never in a million years they would make one. Got super stoned and watched it in theater.
You have to teach your class that they are going to be adults, or even better they already are - and depending on what grade you're teaching, they will be on their own in 1-4 years. They need to learn now how to rely on themselves rather than others.
That's what's up, bro. In high school, we read this book. The teacher wanted us to read it so bad that he actually bought copies for everyone. Not sure how the fuck he was able to afford that shit, but that's what he did. It left such an impression on me. The idea of just being alone, childlike foolishness, self-imposed rules and boundaries... loved it. It's still one of my favorite books along with this one...
...
Not your guy, but I thought the movie gave it a good try.
The problem with the transition is the medium. Most of the book is told from Ender's perspective and internalized thoughts.
Everyone's swinging their literary cocks around with heavy stuff, and here I am just loving easy reading, like the Discworld novels (especially the ones about the city watch) and shit like the dark elf trilogy by R.A. Salvatore.
Favorite book: Meing Kampf
Ever increasing in our schools we are babying children, so much so that when they go to college, when they should be on their own basically, they need safe spaces and trigger warnings. Teach them young that the world doesn't owe them shit, and they need to take responsibility.
They didn't do their homework? That is their fuck up no matter how they should look at it, dog ate it - should have left it out - had to work - should have made time some how like staying up later or waking up early. It is on THEM to figure out how to balance their lives.
*Mein Kampf
I'm not sure one book can do that. It sounds like a class unto itself. No, it sounds more like years and years of continuous instruction. Call it "parenting," maybe. I'll teach my students to appreciate literature and introduce them to the central idea of a novel, but to teach them self-reliance? Yeah that's not going to happen. But I have faith in the next generation. I really do. They'll be OK.
Ghost writers will do that to you.
I liked that better than "For Whom the Bell Tolls" or "The Old Man and The Sea". Probably because I'd read those others first and was thinking "yeah, okay, I get it" and my expectations weren't as high.
Fine choice.
...
My teacher didnt even assign the whole book - she just read from parts of it, along with other poems. But she did a whole quarter about it. She made a big difference to me in that one quarter, so you never know who it will stick with.
I know it's not high literature but I read mostly historical fiction and scifi/fantasy and of them all, this is my personal fav.

the stories themselves are okay
but you can tell by the way he writes that hes a huge fucking asshole
Yeah that sounds like the right approach to teaching Walden, actually. Sounds like your teacher knew what he/she was doing.
I also watched Into The Wild and bought that book on amazon and never read it, but did flip through it several times to make up the spine so people think I read it. I'm wit u bro.
Hyperion Cantos - Dan Simmons
Illium/Olympus - Dan Simmons
Culture Books - Ian M Banks
Anansi Boys - Neil Gaiman
The Graveyard Book - Neil Gaiman
Dune but not the sequels and the prequels even less
Armor - John Steakley
Old Man's War - John Scalzi
Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, his other books are good too though.
Have Spacesuit, Will Travel
World War Z was actually pretty good, better than the film
Ender's Game series was ok
The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho
The Man in the High Castle explored some interesting ideas, as do other Philip K dick Books
you are now aware that the NYT bestseller list is a fucking scam
Also - in the same semester she had is read about dystopias and utopias. Such as orwell vs huxley.
asimov is a fucking wizard
OK there it is. My nigga.
The short sun/long sun series is actually better.
...
>World War Z
Well, the only thing the book and movie have in common are pretty much the name and that they're both about zombies, so no wonder they aren't alike. I loved the book. The movie was shit through and through.
Yeah ctrl f failed me.
Wolfe's maybe not for everyone, but I've read the entire solar arc a few times and always catch new shit. Gorgeous books.
This was also in an alternative school - where lots of the kids were already reliant upon welfare, deeply entrenched in gangs and crime. They would have the weekly PO visit. I was only there because of my chronic pain - and depression but I never let that out until years later. But shit dude, charter schools can be amazing.
...
>babying
>in schools
It doesn't start in the schools, friend. It starts at home.
I just love when schools and teachers catch flack for shit like this. Here, let me walk you through a recent experience of mine and a common one, too...
>be me
>teacher
>have lazy student
>not doing any work
>failing class
>not gonna baby him
>parents go to guidance counselor
>student is given a "504" (special accommodations)
>claims anxiety, nervousness, panic attacks...
>all bullshit but my hands are tied
>I'm *legally* obligated to provide special accommodations
>more time on tests, accept late work, etc
>it's retroactive too
>go back and have to change grades
>he passes class
But it's the school's fault and teachers right? No...
This one is pretty good.
Solid list. thanks.
Only read the new sun series and the two wizard knight books. They were ok, but in my mind nothing special.
Idk if you read the hunger games, but it reminded me of suzanne collins style of writing. shit jokes being forced on the reader, unimaginative, not thinking beyond the story to how it would actually work in society, but also it reminded me of Neal Stephenson's over dramatics and over stylisation like some angsty teen's wet dream ideal of 'cool' with a black leather cape and swordstick.
...
This is very informative.
Red Storm Rising
Charter schools can be great. Magnet schools and vocational schools, too. I taught at a vocational school for a short period of time when I was breaking into the profession, and it was the best school I've ever taught at. Really wish they had an opening...
just finished the Gentlemen Bastards books. wonderful fun. not super deep or "groundbreaking," but definitely a fun read.
this is a good book!
I also liked The Great Train Robbery a lot (same author) it goes into the Victorian underworld quite a bit - very interesting.
I liked wizard knight too. Long sun/short sun are a bit more convoluted in some ways and harder to get into, but make a better story imo - short sun in particular. Just expresses a sadness that really resonates with me for some reason.
That is true - it starts at home, but it is reenforced in schools. Like you said - his special accommodations were bullshit. Maybe it was just because I came from a very hippy liberal area, maybe other schools aren't as accommodating of bullshit. But my entire school experience was, and I only see that spreading.
I loved the film of that.
I wouldn't mind living in that future. Give me Soma and casual sex.
The Glory and the Dream by William Manchester, The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe
indeeed
that was a great idea actually
I've read this at least 6 times in the last 25 years. I've also read almost all of his other books too. Excellent author.
TO THE EVERLASTING GLORY OF THE MOBILE INFANTRY
I like the idea of the dresden files, but the way the author keeps stacking stakes on top of already ridiculous stakes always makes the conclusions feel so damn anticlimactic. It's like if the main villain was a giant mechanised godzilla and the protagonist a crippled kid in a wheelchair and he wins by peeing himself so the men robot gets short-circuited. Every ending is like "Wtf?REALLY?!"
The vegetarian by han kang
I mean, the teachers at this charter school had smaller classes and really cared about teaching, I mean more so than your average teacher - because the students weren't there because they had to be, they were actually there because they wanted to be, this was their last chance - they could just leave if they wanted to. Ive had teachers that just didnt give a shit - they handed us a packet and basically gave us free reign with little to no instruction. These teachers how ever were invested in the class - I had the best teachers in this one school than I had in any other that I was at before.
randomly bought it at walmart and read 3/4s of it one summer when i was like 16
i also wrote in the margins a damn lot, which is the only time ive ever done that with a book
but i lost it and dont remember what it was even about
somehting about trains and people being assholes
Patrician
My childhood favourite.
...
Popular history that reads like a thriller.
Also not your guy, the movie disappointed, not just cos of what says but also fuck child actors man, they never give a convincing performance. Also they skip so much of the deeper feeling and meaning, even down to Ender's reaction at the end. It's like in the book you come to know and identify with Ender which doesn't happen in the film so you don't feel his pain or anguish.
It starts at home and is reinforced in schools only because we have no other choice. I cannot refuse to follow a student's 504 or IEP. It's not up to me. If I refuse, I personally can be sued -- not the school, ME!
You have no idea the shitstorm parents can stir up. If they don't like a teacher, me for example, they can actually go to the school, request all my college transcripts and test scores, my certificates. It may not amount to anything, but it's embarrassing and it looks like I'm a shit teacher.
If they're really wealthy and want to get into it, they'll sue. It's happening right now at a school where I used to teach -- massive lawsuit, 6 teachers, 2 faculty, school board, the city...
So what do you want me to do? Not being snarky, but in all seriousness, what would you have me do?
>something about trains and people being assholes
Yea, pretty much.
hell yeah the TAO!
agree, have you tried reading any neil gaiman books? he did so co-authoring with TP and while his humour and fantasy style are a bi more serious than discworld still good reads if you have the time.
Goodie.
Good but has an edgy connotation now unfortunately.
Not as bad as people are bashing it for, but you could chop out most of it (literally hundreds of pages) and it'd be better. No sex with Dagny pls
Tried that, didn't work. Was upset.
Personally like Slaughterhouse V more.
I like it, but it feels like the most anti-climatic of the well known dystopian trio.
>Cred Forums
Hey, now I can feel more well read. I actually read this for extra credit in World History back in high school after I was grouped with a couple of tards that let our project just die because I was absent for one day.
Surprised i see no comments.

Honestly, pretty good. It lacked some of the poetic descriptions Bradbury usually has, but still solid.
See above on Atlas Shrugged.
Ditto.
Probably the greatest philosophical work ever written, stylistically at least
Apparently not, but I'll write it down and check it out.

whew lad that was impactful

Good pick.
Hadn't read anything off it before, only saw that it was from the best seller list cos it got the acclamation on the cover. Still was disappointed that it was low key dross.
Pretty much everything to do with JOI is great
Fucking loved it
Damn right. Here's my favorite Asimov. Time travel, motherfuckers!
Can't pick, but any Philip K. Dick.
