what I would say is
1) don't use one of those generic CB/SWs that are really just sweepers, you want something closer to a fullback crossed with a playmaker. acceleration, anticipation, and passing are crucial, everything else is negotiable (including manletness)
2) they won't do ANY libero-ing if you have a DM on the field
but things might've changed a lot since fm13 (haha, that one's for you miles)

Rabiot's a great player to have since he can play CM or DM and he honestly does well at CB and LB. He was almost always an above average performer although he didn't have many PotM performances. 4-V-1, 4-3-3 and any variant of that are pretty nice. The things you gotta pay attention about in a 4-1-2-3 are the >wiengers/IFs(A)/RMD never defending. Your FBs need to provide width or you'll go nowhere. You could use Fluid or Very Fluid and task them to man-mark the opposition's FBs but you could lose shape. Your 3 in the midfield also gotta work a lot even as creative players, and your DM needs to be rock solid.

Here, I have a WB(S) in the WB strata behind my IF(A) on the left side of the pitch. It's there to prevent the massive gap that would exist if the WB(S) was in the FB strata. On the other side, WB (A) and IF (S) to "balance". It's also because my IF(A) and his RMD substitute are both better players than the guys on the other wing, so I cannot afford not to play them with a (A) duty. Else, boring DM (D), DLP(S) and RPM in the midfield. RPM because I needed more movement and better positioning than a AP (A), a role which I often despise in the CM strata.

Few instructions, I adapt during matches. The important thing for keeping some Possession is to prevent your GK and defenders from hoofing forward. Your more attacking/creative players shouldn't hoof too much unless they see a TM somewhere.

I'm envisioning trying a 3-5-1-1/3-6-1, but I've never managed to make it work before as I couldn't make much out of the possession and high pressing in terms of goals or CCCs.

claasen's J-League is pretty good but it feels kind of empty once you are dominating the AFC CL every year

I did a journeyman save and started in China, it's painfully boring. In China you can have 4 foreign players registered and one additional Asian player, 3 on the pitch at once. In Korea it's 3 foreign players total IIRC. Your foreign players are way better than everyone else (obviously) and most of the teams you play in the Asian CL are greyed out rosters. In China all of the regens are awful too.

It really displays the limits of the AI with managing rosters, the same players end up being bought back and forth in the league (including foreign players). Yawn.

They'll still give you a decent chunk to spend once you hit the PL. The TV money will help out a lot. Don't be hesitant to bring in some loaned in players either, if they help you stay up it's totally worth having them.
