What the fuck is going on in this game? I am 5 matches into my first online season and I have conceded 4 goals in 4 of them. I was regularly in div 3 or 4 in past FIFAs, rarely ever conceding 2 goals, let alone 4. What is happening

Because you can put hunter chem on Messi as well. Not sure why people are acting like you can't put chem styles on high-end players. See pic related. You might be able to get someone like Draxler close to Del Piero's base stats with a chem style, but with a chem style on Del Piero, he's significantly better.

Average players will end up with several stats in the high 80s and low 90s, but the top players will end up having several stats at 98-99.

Possession football is a lot better in this years FIFA.

I bought the deluxe edition so have a few decent golds to start with, but my team is still mostly bronze and whenever I go online, I'm against full golds and lose a lot. Should I keep playing against the computer? How much gold do I need to buy a decent squad? Also, is it worth using my free loan players I got from deluxe against the computer?

Use your loan players whenever mate, just have fun with them.

Go into the EA Catalogue through R3/RS, then buy all the 1000 coin boosts for Ultimate team.

Then when you're playing the CPU for some easy games, you'll get about 1.5k coins per match.

Use those to start building up a good team and take that online.
In total there should be about 75 x 1k coin boosts, which will give you a good enough team for quite a while. (or one really good player.)

Mine says may 2016 and it's super easy

Oh and also, if you ever do an offline draft, set the difficulty to one below what you're used to.
Rewards aren't based on difficulty. So just have fun and win all four games.
