I've hated this meme for decades.

I'm actually old enough to remember why they had to Tiger proof.

There's this misconception that back when Tiger was truly dominant his game was perfect. It was just his distance control on his irons and putting, the rest was kinda hit or miss. And his driving was never accurate. But because he could drive so far, he could hit driver on every hill and not care because even if in thick rough, he'd be holding a wedge.

Courses had to lengthen because Tiger essentially broke their design. He didn't care about rough punishment or fairway bunkers, he'd just go over it all.

Now Tiger's distance is more common because he attracted more athletes to the game, but before Tiger there were a lotta games with games like Zach Johnson (altho not nearly as good). An example would be Justin Leonard, who was really fucking good, but his career pretty much ended when every course added length.

But to be fair Tiger wasn't the only really long hitter, Davis Love III, Phil and Couples were all very long, but none could match the rest of Tiger's game.

What you see Dustin Johnson do to some courses right now is what Tiger did on every course from 99-01 which is when the real Tiger proofing happened across courses, worldwide.
