Honestly I feel like this show didn't follow the spirit of the book. In the novel the Japanese are kind of portrayed as your average imperialists who are turning the west coast into a Japanese colony, but in the show they're all secret police and totalitarian regimes.

At any rate I think it's more valid to criticize the show's failure to live up to the spirit of the book rather than decry its plot holes.

what is any book really about / what is the point of any book?

Compared to other stories by dick this one doesnt really have a spectacular ending - ubik, three stigmata, time out of joint etc. all have big revelations at the end - but in this after they meet abendsen the story doesnt really go anywhere - nothing happens, julia frink (or whatever her name was) just realises she lives in one of many possible worlds and it fills her both with dread as well as take the edge off for her.

So I guess the point of it - to me at least - is that nothing you really do or how horrible your life is matters, since there are other realities where things are better / the realisation that there are other realities dwarfs your shitty little problems.

It's about lots of other shit as well obviously like the cultural and social differences in particular between japs and westerners and the kind of spiritual aspect the iChing has brought to the US - and commentary about the jap obsession with americana.
