visual storytelling has to climb a huge mountain that both the audience and the investors are desperate for: idealism. Every actor/actress must be attractive (no matter how stupid it is considering the story) and every location/environment must be perfect.

I think this is also why a ton of artists attempt the alienating opposite: deliberately creating grotesque affronts to the senses for equally no purpose. Few films try to tell a story and fight against pleasing idiot audiences and investors.
