/Movie of the century/

what's your pick edition

pro-tip: My pick is truth

Mine is Under The Skin.

I actually loved Lost River, it's an incredibly strong directorial debut. It wears its influences on its sleeves: it's a combination of Refn, Lynch, and Malick; but it all works. I hope Gosling keeps directing and the reception didn't deter him.

>I hope Gosling keeps directing and the reception didn't deter him.

Me too.
Some critics saw it as the gem it is, but most went full pleb.

>Under The Skin
fuck off.

I'll check it out now. Curious to see how Gosling handles directing.

It's a gorgeous film. Were you frightened by the erect penises?

pretentious and boring bunch of nothing. literally no deeper meaning just pretentious bullshit loosely strung together by nudity and necrophilia.

>I didn't understand the plot
Gotcha.

>Poor man's Refn

Man this board needs to get some taste.

>literally no deeper meaning just pretentious bullshit

That's ironic, because only pretentious cocksuckers think films should have a "deeper meaning"

People who actually appreciate the aesthetics of film don't need the film to have a "deep meaning" like some kind of fucking fable

ok plebbit.

>your Reddit if you don't think Ryan Gosling is the greatest director to ever live

>I pretended there was a plot
you too, no worries.

your opinion is wrong, and it also sucks. pure aesthetic with no story is for boring 50 year olds and pretentious 20 year olds.

first of all, we're discussing the current century, not eternity.
Secondly, you said he was the "poor man's Refn", which is bullshit. Yes he's a very aesthetic author but that's about all that there is in common with Refn. Are you gonna call all stylized directors "poor man's Refn"?

My point being, you're a pleb, please spare us whatever neuronal connections happen in that meatbox of yours that you consider to be a brain.

can plebbit please go back to pleb land?

The story in a film is just a vessel to deliver emotionally charged images/sounds. You have a fundamental misunderstanding of the medium if you don't understand this.

but i liked Lost Rivers, Drive, and even Only God Forgives. it's just that Under The Skin is a literal bag of shit with a sticker that reads "cinema" on it.

i understand art. a work of art failing to convey a message is simply lazy, and never for some higher purpose, just lack of talent.

>i understand art. a work of art failing to convey a message is simply lazy, and never for some higher purpose

What is the "message" in Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor?

why did you post a picture of that whore?

Cuckoldry

She's the best streamer there is and an honorable woman

an array of emotion that is otherwise impossible to articulate in words. takes much more skill to convey through one instrument, than some pretentious snob who had 13 million and several other instruments at his disposal.

>array of emotion

And that's exactly what art is supposed to do. And a "message" is not needed to evoke that in the viewer. That was my point.

we're talking different mediums here. it doesn't take words to tell a story - but when you have words, sound, music, a naked celebrity, 13 million dollars and STILL fail to convey a message, that's what we call:
>pre·ten·tious prəˈten(t)SHəs/ adjective adjective: pretentious
>Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.
that was MY point.

she's a whore mang

>pretentious
Only plebs use this meaningless buzzword. Opinion discarded, pleb confirmed.

I'm confused, do you want emotions or a message?

Kys pseud, read

some movies are pretty objectively pretentious.
Like Dogtooth. Or 50% of contemporary french movies.

When a movie is both extremely shallow and takes itself very seriously, it can be called pretentious.
Lost River and Under the Skin do not fit these prerequisites, though.

>STILL fail to convey a message

Good directors like Refn and Glazer are not interested in doing that. It's not the case that they fail in conveying a message, they're not interested in it in the first place because they're not trying to make a story for children. What they're interested in is expressing themselves through the audiovisual realm.

i am JUST gay !!!

There are so many films I love from 00s onwards, but I've made a list of my favorite films from 10s. I should revisit 00s but that's a huge task so much to watch.

it's not meaningless, i just gave you the definition. your opinion is meaningless.

balance, the fabric nature itself was built on.

She's one of the few women on this planet who is actually funny.

ching ching bing bong fuck off reddit

but i think refn does a good job of balancing it all out. what he lacks in message, he makes up in aesthetic, what he lacks in aesthetic, he makes up in sequence. to the average movie-goer none of it sticks out because he is a master of balance.

>balance
Well you have a strange way of expressing that notion considering that this is the first you mention it
What's the message of that Bach piece btw?

only good thing is Debie's cinematography. The movie has nothing else

we're talking about two different mediums.

>how much citrus juice is in a grape?
Literal retard.

ayy lamo bumbety bumb bumb

The film has everything.
Not only is it flawless, it brings so much to the table.

GOAT Film of the century.
