Denzel is a legit very good actor, but that performance is kind of hammy and ridiculous. He should've gotten an Oscar for something else.
Kind of like Heath Legend's Joker. It's not a bad performance, but it's mostly just simple and over the top, which strikes casuals as "omg so good" if it's competently done. Great acting requires nuance and expressing a range of experience, not melodramatically but competently expressing a limited range.
