The thing about Sobel is that he's a huge cunt and fundamentally unlikable but Easy wouldn't have been nearly as elite without him. I remember reading something once about how Easy's fitness evaluation score was the highest anyone had ever managed to get in their time and it was assumed they were cheating, but when they were made to go through the evaluation again they scored even higher. So Sobel was a right dickhead with few redeemable qualities but at least he made Easy the best conditioned company they could be.

Winters was so pro-German in the final episodes he may as well started goose-stepping.

Going along with the circumstance= true villain theme, Sobel did everything he did to make easy company ready for war. Like I can understand the need for props and accomplishments training his troops but even to this guy, all malicious actions were done to promote discipline, order, and a sense of readiness for the desperations of combat.
I think he was human and had multiple motivations even when being his dickiest, and that making his men ready to fall hundreds of feet, kill, run and kill some more and survive the war was the base motivation and goal. I completely agree that circumstance is the true antagonist in that they are racing against time to join in a war they are starting from behind in.
