I was diagnosed with it a month ago too. I love my mother but I feel she had a lot of influence in the decision. I recieved a terribly unnacurate report that even she (my mum) largely disagreed with. I was awfully distressed for a while. I thought I was going mad or had always been so; that I was so socially unaware or disconnected from other souls but just had no awareness of it. Like I did not have a vital awareness or the sensory capacity to even understand what it is that I did not have. I talked to friends and family and people who knew me from different places and in different settings and they mostly thought it was nonsense.

The process has holes and the examiners can easily be incompetent. I was in hospital at the time for attempting suicide and I think they were just searching for something.

Diagnosed autist here, I doubt there are many films that accurately depict it because for me and a lot of other people on the high-functioning end of the spectrum, it's not noticeable to anyone who's not a trained professional. I have no problems socialising because I'm not intellectually impaired and I've learned the 'rules' of interacting with other people even if they didn't come to me naturally.

I think people can have failings and deficiencies without their source being a chronic developmental disorder. I just think autism is too readily diagnosed. That is the general consensus in the thread.

I didn't seek it. I have a care coordinator for other mental health problems who strongly encouraged me to get tested for an Autistic Spectrum Disorder based on my presentation. And I really didn't think I had it, so I decided to do the test to prove him wrong. I was wrong, I do have Asperger Syndrome and apparently it's quite obvious.

It makes sense I guess. I have spent upwards of ten hours a day on Cred Forums and/or MMORPGs for over six years now which I suppose is just one good indicator.

A small amount of overdiagnosis renders the whole disorder meaningless!

I work with autistic children - I would agree that there's some dubious diagnoses at the high functioning end. But the non-verbal / barely verbal children that I work with all clearly have a severe developmental disorder, and there's enough similar between them for it to make sense for them to be collectively labelled together as having the same disorder.
