There are many ways to interpret how the prisoner actually lived the sentence

at times he shows no remorse which leads the viewer to believe that he never did the action, but for the briefest of seconds while he torments himself for losing 20 years you can see times where he had a look of regret where he might have actually in fact done the crime and deeply regrets his actions

Or even the fact that despite his allure manner he was actually scared and sad of his fate for a crime he didn't do

Then you can go even deeper and put the entire scene to a meaning of wasted time doing petty things
in a society where we are only parts of a system
and have no way to fight it
