Is Martin Scorcese the last true artist in Hollywood?

Is Martin Scorcese the last true artist in Hollywood?

Please take into account that I said Hollywood and not cinema.

New York New York is my favorite Marty movie.

Why the fuck is nobody responding to this thread? Is it because there are no memes in the OP?

Joel & Ethan Coen, David Fincher

is Iñárritu not Hollywood?

Nah there are a few other good ones.

>Corn brothers

Yes

>Fincher

No

he's a Tarantino that went to film school AND films

But that's wrong user. Scorcese makes movies about his heroes, Tarantino just steals movies from his heroes.

>corn brothers

I like his movies a lot, but he is also my directfu. I love watching the way he comes alive when he talks about movies. I saw that Hitchcock and Truffaut documentary a few weeks ago and the best part was hearing him talk about Vertigo, I probably would have wept if he'd gone on longer

>made Hugo
No

I don't follow.

The Departed and Hugo are his best 21st century films.

I wouldn't say the last, but definetly the greatest. No other Hollywood directors currently in the business have the talent, vision, artistic grasp or legacy he has. Even if his current movies aren't as good as some of his past achievements, they're still fantastic and a display of true knowledge of cinema.

>Iñárritu
>artist
Pick one.

dubs confirm it

He is ONE of the last true artists around.

The better question is which was better...
Casino or Goodfellas?

I'd say Goodfellas.

>Scorsese
>true artist
I don't buy the premise. I think he's much more like a very skillful technical director without much to say.

What's wrong with Fincher?

>one of the best visual styles
>one of the best 90s films, plus two of the best 21st century films

>Tarantino just steals movies from his heroes
Everyone does this. They just never bring it up.

Even though he does elevate his source material to a better level with his films, they're usually just really trashy and terribly written books. Takes away from the end product, you know.

Case in point: Gone Girl. A well-made film with impressive visuals that isn't subtle in presenting its superficial themes.

t. different user

get off tarantinos dick namefag. you always defend his shit

...

He doesn't really make anything anymore though.

...

Hugo was fucking great fuckface

This is actually a good answer

His last movie was ten years ago.

Remember that time Terrence Malick took a twenty year vacation?

Agreed user. He was in the Roger Ebert documentary and he was by far the best interview. Made me cry desu.

I'm not writing off David Lynch user, I'm just saying as it stands he isn't really a part of the Hollywood scene. He makes indie shit.

Yes, he's so passionate about film and it's very interesting hearing him talk about it. His documentary "A Journey Through American Film" or something like that, was fascinating. And his tireless work to find, restore, and preserve old films is very admirable.

He's also old enough to have some of that old Hollywood shimmer about him, not in his films necessarily, but he worked with and rubbed shoulders with actors, directors, and producers from an era which, to us, is so far away.

He's still working and a rare example of a director who doesn't do just any film pitched his way. I'm pretty sure he could do another movie anytime he pleases. That's why I wouldn't count him out yet.

he's a hack

He'll soon be a weab though

Transasianism is not something to joke about.

>Watch the Ebert interview because of this thread
>Been calling him Martin Scor-says-ee forever
>His name is pronounced Scor-sess-ay

>Trans-Asian

THIS SURE IS A SWELL THREAD GOING ON HERE. I GOTTA SAY YOU PEOPLE ARE QUITE INTERESTING; YES SIR INTERESTING INDEED!

I don't know if he's still working in Hollywood or if he just does indie stuff nowadays

>Watching the Kurosawa 100th Birthday Tribute
>Lucas is acting like a robot who doesn't care
>Spielberg is bragging about meeting him
>Scorsese is beautifully well-spoken, ends by calling him senseI in the correct pronunciation
Damn
