I bought a 60" 1080p earlier this year. There were a lot of 4K's on display, but it wasn't hard to find 1080p's on display either.

I own two Blu-Rays (both gifts) and have never watched them because I don't have a player.

4k will be useful for projectors. For regular TV sizes it doesn't seem beneficial.

Extra hz doesn't matter if the source can't match it. 60hz is enough for films since most films are rendered at 23-25 fps (unless you coun't experimental stuff)

720p is enough for that. There is no reason to watch a movie in 4k in the normal tv size and viewing distances. 4k tvs look good in the stores because you are standing 2 feet away from them and they are usually playing travel channel porn.

720p is suitable for 40in 16:9 panels
1080p is suitable for up to 70in 16:9 panels.

Why? My old 1080p DLP finally kicked the bucket, I wanted a 60" screen, and it was a lot cheaper than a 4K TV.

I might get a 4K monitor for gaming within the next few years, but that TV won't be leaving my living room until it dies.
It's mostly used for satellite TV and Netflix. Satellite is still almost entirely 720p or 1080i, and the internet where I live isn't fast enough to stream 4K content anyway.
I don't own or plan on owning any consoles to play on it, not that they could handle 4K worth a shit anyway.

Film can (and will) continue to be remastered for the new generation. And most digital masters over the last 20 years have been @2k DI. 4k film scans look excellent - look at Taxi Driver and The Thing (though that's 2k). There is a clear jump in quality between 540p/720p/1080p/4k
