According to cast interviews she was super on-edge on set, it really comes across when you rewatch her scenes. Really unnatural.

Her beating Kylo Ren could be somewhat motivated by three things
1. Him not wanting to kill her, but rather to turn her (because that shit always works during duels)
2. Him getting caught of guard by her sudden epiphany
3. Him being badly wounded

I think their biggest mistake was underselling his wound. He took a blast from chewbaccas crossbow-thing that has been shown to send fully armored men flying. That's bound to have some power, but Kylo ren seems mostly fine. They shouldve had him limping and being visible hindered more than they did.

Mind tricking is something I can imagine comes pretty easily to a jedi. Id say Kylo not keeping her under better guard is a bigger flaw than the mind trick itself.

After being indoctrinated since he was a toddler he won't pull the trigger when ordered but has no problem hooting and hollering gleefully throughout the rest of the movie while killing all the guys he grew up with.

Say what you will about the prequels, the acting, the over use of cgi, but in NO WAY are the prequels DULL...

They are very colorful films (I am using the word colorful in symbolistic terms i.e. so much is happening in each scene, so many extras, so many new planets, it is not dull in the slightest).

Now TFA is definitely dull compared to the prequels.

Maybe if JJ releases a Force Awakens extended cut with all the deleted scenes and scrapped ideas, then maybe I wouldn't consider it dull BUT this theatrical JJ cut of TFA to me feels too short, too fast paced and just not that interesting or memorable.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of Force Awakens but as a movie it fails on many levels.

I am looking forward to the extra deleted scenes that JJ is releasing at the end of this year.

I loved his opening scene but yeah a shame that he wasn't written better in the second and 3rd acts.

Finn had no arc. They were both terribly written. The only difference is that Boyega is a somewhat competent actor while Daisy Ridley is Emilia Clarke tier.

I do find them dull though. There's so many chase scenes, underdeveloped battle scenes and random funnyman scenes with droids and jar-jar and shit that it all melts together in a hyperactive blur for me. Its ADHD in movie form. TFA had a better pace that gave more impact to the action scenes and a generally heavier tone.

2. Jango Fett v Obi Wan
3. The colosseum battle
4. Natalie Portman being pretty

If they had trimmed away like half of the chase scenes and quips they could've been decent movies. A bad thing about them though is that the heavy reliance on CGI means they aged pretty horribly. I know they used a lot of practical effects, but its like they "CGI'd"-them up so it wouldnt be such a stark contrast. The result is that nothing looks real. Just take a simple scene like two characters standing in a hallway, and the hallway looks fake as shit. It really detracts from the viewing experience

I was rewatching TFA and found a new critique. The X-Wing pilots were bad actors. I didn't realize this the first time but they don't react the correct way. They casually say that they have someone behind them, or that they are taking heavy fire, or that someone has been "hit"

The best one is when they are going through the trench and the alien says, "I'm hit" in the most nonchalant way possible as his cockpit starts to go up in flames and he barrels into the ground and dies a horribly painful death.

Really the entire movie needed to be rewritten. Finn needed to be a storm trooper longer, Rey should have been captured for some reason by Empire remnant forces, Finn should have experienced some sort of revelation and rescued her. The rest of the movie should have been Rey trying to teach Finn how to behave like a normal human, and the two of them escaping the Empire. Rey would eventually have to discover force powers for some reason at the end, and then they meet Luke. That's it. No death star. Make it like the bourne identity or something.

I agree with this. I actually think the duels in the prequels are weaker than in the original trilogy, because the strikes lacks impact. Everything moves so fast and with so many twirls and shit that it barely looks like fighting. I especially hated how they made Yoda. As a jedi master his style should be refined, highly effective with no unecessary movements. Instead he fights like a hamster on speed, or someone who mashes XXXXXXX in a fighting game.
Another gripe I have is that every other duel has the combatants move like a mile while fighting. The set pieces change constantly while they ride lizards and jump between hovercrafts over lava etc. Feels goofy as fuck.

I wish they hadn't half arsed both rey's and finn's arcs. Especially Finn's because it was actually A NEW IDEA.

Yeah I noticed that on my first watch, only Poe is normal since he's the commander and giving orders. Compared to scenes on the Death Star where both squadrons are panicking and shouting to each other, these guys sound like they're just, well, reading.
Although, in ANH, the scene where Wedge has to leave Luke is terrible. Wedge just says "Sorry." when Luke tells him to go like he's apologizing for bumping into someone on the sidewalk
