I'm surprised he becomes an enjoyable, well likeable I suppose, protagonist at all. Even in the show I can't imagine he's anyone's favourite.

The show is in my opinion a solid 7/10. Mad cliffhanger at the end though, but who cares?

I did not like him either in the show, until some of the latest episodes. Then I kind of understood how we actually saw him growing up from an edgy nerd to more of an adult. In the book he is a 17 year old kiss less virgin who hates his life when he starts at Brakebills so no wonder he is not likable.

Oh I have watched the show, that's why I went back to read the books. I really did like the show. I think I may exaggerate how much I liked it since I expected nothing good out of it, but it really took me by surprise.

I know what you mean about edgy. Even still Elliot was a great character, albeit his edgness went on a bit long. The fact the actor stole every scene he was in as a comic relief character, and was able to do the same when he got depth is rather impressive.

the show is using material that is meant for teenagers becoming adults and expects people to buy graduate students acting emotionally stunted. the problem with aging an entire group is not adjusting the writing for that.

It is also a product of the canadian film industry which is hit or miss at the best of times.

It took me by surprise as well. I kinda got hooked on the series after the first episode, but I have a weakness for magic/sci-fi so I basically watch anything in that genre.

Elliot I liked, but I didn't get the feeling he was edgy, just depressed. Penny was to much of a "tryhard tough guy" sometimes, but I can also imagine hearing voices in your head all day long can get on your nerves. The blonde chick was annoying at times but damn I almost fell in love with her.

I wasn't amazed by the first episode, a lot of people tend to say when the beast shows up was when they were hooked. For me it was episode 3(?) when Quentin is in the psychiatric ward.

I unironically read the three books for Q, and obviously the women help and I think chick they got to play Julia did best job of all the people on the show, and hate what they did to penny.
