>Die Hard
I've always wondered how would you translate that properly.

I'm interested in this too, here's a bump m8

To Spanish? Intransigente

The Latin American translation (Duro de matar) is better than the Spanish one anyways

"Over My Dead Body" Finn here

Well, here in Brazil, Die Hard is called "Duro de Matar" which translates to "hard to kill"

in Finland it's Die Hard - Only over my dead body

Portugal.

Hot Fuzz igot stuck with the subtitle
"Zwei abgewichste Profis" in Germany, meaning either "Two hardboiled professionals" or,to most people "Two jerked-off professionals". The mind still boggles over that one. It actually got rechristened "Verbrechen verboten" - "Crime is illegal" when it aired on free TV.

Lol you Portuguese are weird

In french it's "Piège De Cristal", it translates to "Crystal Trap".

The Sound of Music is la novicia rebelde (the rebellious nun) in south América and sonrisas y lágrimas(smiles and tears) in spain.

It's Secret Files or Secret Archives, not folders m8

'Atonement' is 'Atonement, sin and lust' (expiación deseo y pecado) in spain

>Meet The Spartans - Spartasses
Better than the original tbf

In Russia its "A hard nut to crack". Lots of weird translations in general...

here in england we call it "Upways Bankjoby"

>Airplane! - ... And Where's the Pilot?
>White Chicks - ... And where are the Blondes?
>A Haunted House - ... And Where's the Ghost?
>Repossessed - ... And Where's the Exorcist?

Neat, we also have a "series", roughly:
>Airplane! - Land however you can
>Naked Gun - Catch it (grab it?) however you can
>Spy Hard - Spy however you can
And a few more, mostly but not limited to Leslie Nielsen's movies.

All the same here (Argentina) besides FMJ, here it's "Born to kill" and Oncean's 12, here it's "The new big heist"

brazil

>Ring - The Call
>Naked gun - Run 'cause the cops are coming!
>Inside man - the perfect plan
>Pan's Labyrinth - Labyrinth of the faun
>The Thing - Enigma From Another world (I will never get this one)
>old country for no men - where the weak have no chance

>Balls of Fury - Don't You Touch Me in the Balls

Heh

>The Fighting Sausage

>The Thing - Enigma From Another world (I will never get this one)

It's an alien, and who the alien actually is is an enigma.

>Airplane! - Hey, we're flying!
>Spinal Tap - Hey, we're rocking!
>Police Squad - Hey, we're batoning!
>Kentucky Fried Movie - Hey, we're laughing!
>A Mighty Wind - Hey, we're folking!

Also:
>Die Hard - Over My Dead Body
>Die Hard 2 - Over My Dead Body
>Die Hard 3 - Angel of Death
>Die Hard 4.0

but why completely change the name of the movie so radically? It just doesnt feel right when there's a direct translation to "the thing"?

You protohues should be exterminated.

>Toy Story - The Rivals
the fuck

Chinese translation are pretty standardized.
Hong Kong and Taiwan are more commercialized

A few examples m8? I don't speak Chinese

You forgot:

>The Naked Gun - And Where's the Cop?

>Psycho - The Man Who Became His Mother.

CAN WE FUCKING NUKE PORTUGAL YET FUCK

That's hilarious

Abattoir
Taiwanese translation Te Li Guiwu
"Extremely fearsome haunted house"
But the main punch of the translation is that B&Q's Chinese brand is called Teliwu

In Italy:
Airplane! ---> The World's Craziest Airplane
Airplane 2: The Sequel ---> The World's Craziest Airplane... Even Crazier
The Naked Gun ---> A Blunt Bullet
Spy Hard ---> Spy and Let Spy
Die Hard ---> Crystal Trap
Die Hard 2 ---> 58 Minutes to Die

In Italy:
>Airplane! ---> The World's Craziest Airplane
>Airplane 2: The Sequel ---> The World's Craziest Airplane... Even Crazier
>The Naked Gun ---> A Blunt Bullet
>Spy Hard ---> Spy and Let Spy
>Die Hard ---> Crystal Trap
>Die Hard 2 ---> 58 Minutes to Die

In Greek its too hard to die

Why is Crysral Trap shared in several European languages?

Probably same distributor.

>Spaniards call Kame Hame Ha "vital wave"

In Denmark, Die Hard: With a Vengeance is called Die Hard: Mega Hard.

And it's not even translated, it's still an English title in Denmark but it was changed because "with a vengeance" is too hard for danish people to pronounce lol

I fucking love when distributors leave the original title and then use the translation as a sub title

>Jurassic World: World of the dinosaurs

>>Psycho - The Man Who Became His Mother.
Way to ruin the fucking twist, Portugal.

Probably the worst one we have in Finland is for the Shawshank Redemption. It's called Rita Heyworth: The Key To An Escape. Literally spoiler in the name.

In mex Jaws is called Shark

weird, huh?

In Korea, Sully is called Sully: Miracle on the Hudson River which I think is a slightly better title.

Most stuff is just transliterated into Korean though which is boring. So >Captain America: Civil War
becomes
>캡틴 아메리카 시빌 워
Which is pronounced kind of like
>cap-tin a-may-ri-ka shi-bil wuh

It's kind of amusing for me as an English speaker to hear the English words attempted to be put into the Korean alphabet

In Finland it's called Killer Shark.

Never really thought how fucking stupid that sounds.

But Jaws isn't even about a shark.

From far away the poster of Die Hard looks like the Twin Towers under attack. Did they send a message?

>The X-Files - Secret Folders.
Sounds kino.

first things first

what does "die hard" actually mean? use it in a sentence

In Italy they gave to the movie the most boring and generic title they could think of:
The Wings of Freedom

As well as:
>Planet of the Apes - The Man who Came From the Future.

>hard to kill
in argentina too
but that's the title of a steven seagal movie
so they translate it to "difícil de matar" = difficult to kill

>>Toy Story - The Rivals.
>>Psycho - The Man Who Became His Mother.
>>The X-Files - Secret Folders.
>>Balls of Fury - Don't You Touch Me in the Balls.
>>Knocked-Up - Lots of Bad Luck.
>>Body Snatchers - The Invasion Of The Violators.
>>Strangers on a Train - The Stranger from North Express.
>>White Men Can't Jump - Whitey Can't Nail It.

K I N O
I
N
O

also in mex Evil Dead called "The Devil's Awakening" and Ash vs. Evil Dead is "Ash Against Evil"

>Taxi Driver: Taxi Driver
just in case we didn't see it the first time

youtube.com/watch?v=a0G_8gHDsL8

>White Men Can't Jump - Blacks Dunk Harder

More from Mexico:

>Bloodsport - Bloody Contact
>Kickboxer - Bloody Contact 2

>Psycho - The Man Who Became His Mother.
Do you guys also call The Sixth Sense "The Psychologist Was Dead All Along"?

"Stopping that would be difficult, it would have to die hard."

>He's a "die hard" fan-he will attend the games no matter how much they lose that season.

Basically it's a synonym for "stubborn"

stub·born
ˈstəbərn/
adjective
adjective: stubborn

having or showing dogged determination not to change one's attitude or position on something, especially in spite of good arguments or reasons to do so.
"he accused her of being a silly, stubborn old woman"
synonyms: obstinate, headstrong, willful, strong-willed, pigheaded, obdurate, difficult, contrary, perverse, recalcitrant, inflexible, iron-willed, uncompromising, unbending;

it's like all those Django! """sequels"""

I'm mexican and the worst i seen is "A Million Ways to Die in the west" was translated as "pueblo chico pistola grande" which translates to "small town big gun"

>fast and furious = a todo gas
>kame hame ha = onda vital

SPAIN?

Some other Finnish translations:

>12 Angry Men - Jury's Decision
>Pulp Fiction - "Pulp Fiction: Stories About Violence"
>Goodfellas - Mafia Brothers
>Once Upon a Time in the West - Harmonica Avenger
>Alien - "Alien - Eight Passenger"
>One Upon a Time in America - "Once Upon a Time in America - The Great Ganster War"
>Vertigo - "Vertigo - Red Teardrop"
>Double Indemnity - Woman Without Conscience
>Rashomon - "Rashomon - Temple of Devil"
>The Apartment - Bachelor Flat
>Good Will Hunting - Will Hunting
>On The Waterfront - Naked Harbor
>Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - Wood, Hay and a few Wild-Goose Chases
>Dial M for Murder - The Perfect Crime
>The Thing - "The Thing - 'It' From Somewhere"
>Maltese Falcon - Maltese Falcons
>Before Sunrise - Love Before Morning
>Groundhog Day - My Day as a Groundhog
>Under Siege - Hijack on the Sea
>Under Siege 2 - Hijack on the Rails

in that case i think in argentinian slang it would be "a muerte" like "se la banca a muerte"

RED (retired, extremely dangerous) was translated BSP (angry, scary pensioners) but BSP is also the Bulgarian Socialist Party whose voter base is old people

Why are latinos so triggered by this and "lobezno"?
You people have some weird shit too, why not fill your memes up with those?

...

>Why are niggers so triggered by this
FTFY

>inb4 t. armando lopez
prove me wrong
you can't
it's always 12yo and crack smoking niggers

I like Enter the dragon in spanish

"Operation: Dragon"
sounds like a spy movie
which it is, but it should be "Presentando al Dragón"

A few more from Italy:

>Home Alone ---> Mommy I missed the plane (apparently, it's also the French title)
>Home Alone 2: Lost in New York ---> Mommy, I missed the plane again: I got lost in New York
>My Girl (same actor) ---> Daddy, I've found a friend
>Teen Wolf ---> Winning Desire
>Jeremiah Johnson ---> Red crow, you will not have my scalp (it sounds like the title of a spaghetti western movie)
>Runaway Bride ---> If you run away, I'll marry you
>Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind ---> If you dump me, I’ll erase you
>City Slickers ---> I'm fleeing the city – Life, love and cows

stirb langsam (die slowly) is the german title for die hard...in fact a lot of german titles are fucking stupid

>(it sounds like the title of a spaghetti western)
it really does

How are the usage of these translation compared to the original titles? Do people just use original titles and ignore the translations?

>007 Seized The Snow Mountain Castle (China & Norway)

Any French examples?

Finland

>From Russia with Love - Secret Agent 007 in Istanbul
>For Your Eyes Only - Very Secret
>A View to a Kill - 006 and The Deadly Glaze
>The Living Daylights - 007 in Dangerzone
>Die Another Day - Death May Wait

we have a few of those in Italy too:
>Vertigo ---> The woman who lived twice
>Road to Perdition ---> He was my father
>Gone Girl ---> Lying love

I like how they made Jaws "Shark" in spanish
and then Jabberjaw "itty-bitty jaw"

>A Bug's Life - Bichos: Una Aventura en Miniatura
>Frozen - Frozen: Una Aventura Congelada
>Cars - Cars: Una Aventura sobre Ruedas
>Up - Up: Una Aventura de Altura
>Moana - Moana: Un Mar de Aventuras

>Mr. Peabody and Sherman - Las Aventuras de Peabody y Sherman
>Joe Dirt - Las Aventuras de Joe El Sucio
>The Wild Life - Las Locas Aventuras de Robinson Crusoe
>The Ant Bully - Ant Bully: Las Aventuras de Lucas

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

French goes with "piège de crystal" AKA "Crystal Trap"

>007 in Dangerzone
Sounds like laser tag

die hard means "to go down swinging"

if you don't understand what that means, in your death throes to inflict as much damage as you can

In croatian Die Hard is translated to 'umri muski', which means die like a man.

>The phrase die hard was first used during the Battle of Albuera (1811) in the Peninsular war. During the battle, Lieutenant-Colonel William Inglis of the 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot was wounded by canister shot. Despite his injuries, Inglis refused to retire from the battle but remained with the regimental colours, encouraging his men with the words "Die hard 57th, die hard!" as they came under intense pressure from a French attack.[1] The 'Die Hards' subsequently became the West Middlesex’s regimental nickname.

>>Planet of the Apes - The Man who Came From the Future.
>he actually comes from the past

I unironically cringed when they said the title in the trailer

James Bond in Brazil.

>Dr. No - 007 VS. The Satanic Dr. No
>From Russia With Love - Miscow VS. 007
>Thunderball - 007 VS. The Atomic Blackmail
>A View to a Kill - 007 Targeted by Killers
>The Living Daylights - 007 Marked for Death
>Die Another Day - 007: Another Day to Die

i think this is it thenit translates to "to (the) death"

Latin-America

>Brokeback Mountain: Secret at the mountain
>No Country For Old Men: Without place for the weak
>There Will Be Blood: Bloody petroleum
>Slumdog Millionaire: Who wants to be a millionaire?
>Zero Dark Thirty: The darkest night

Operation: Dragon sounds much better and fits the movie more Presentando al Dragón, that sounds stupid. Enter the Dragon is the best one.

>>Die Hard = Hard to Kill
>>Hard to Kill = Difficult to Kill

Latin America
>The Living Daylights = His Name is Danger
>Octopussy = Octopussy: 007 vs. The Dangerous Girls

In Italy the local film distributors try to shove the word "love" (or other romantic words like "kiss", "passion" and so on) into the title of almost every foreign rom-com that gets released here.
Even a fucking Wong Kar Wai film got this treatment:
My Blueberry Nights ---> A romantic kiss

BR.

>The Good Son - The Evil Angel.
>Home Alone - They Forgot Me.
>The Grudge - The Scream.
>The Eye - The Eye of Evil.

In Poland Die Hard title is "Glass Trap".

Only the kinoisseurs use the original title when they talk about a movie. The plebs still use the translated one.

>Problem Child = My Poor Little Devil
>Alien = The Eighth Passenger
>Ghost = Ghost, the Shade of Love

>The Fault in Our Stars = Under the Same Star
>The Notebook = Noah's Diary/Diary of A Passion
>Boyhood = Moments of a Life
>Horrible Bosses = I want to Kill My Boss

In my language it's called Deadly Trap

I think that's nostalgia talking
just leave it like it is, are we too dumb to know there is a spionage subplot in a martial arts movie?

it's right there in the poster and the trailer

youtube.com/watch?v=81jCPIag4KA

In Brazil it varies. But it's way more common to not even use titles at all. We're more prone to saying "that Batman with Jim Carrey" than "Batman Forever".

>Planet of the Apes - The Man who Came From the Future.

Jezz, what a way to ruin the surprise.

Jesus Christ Brazil.

>spionage
oh well i fucked up

besides why not "presentando al dragon"?
it really was the movie that introduced Lee to the the common moviegoer

In latin america Lost in translation is called Lost in Tokio

Would make for a good subtitle

Portugal is playing on a whole 'nother level, senpaitachi.

>You Don't Mess With the Zohan - Zohan: The Agent Good With the Cut.

Italian title:
Zohan: all the women come to the comb

It's an innuendo based on a popular italian proverb which says "all the knots come to the comb". It has more or less the same meaning of the english one "all the chickens come home to roost".

Germany:

>Child's Play - Chucky the killer doll

>Cradle 2 Grave - Born 2 Die
>Taken - 96 Hours
>The Prophecy - God's Army
>Danny the dog - Unleashed
>Crash - L.A. Crash

>Zero Dark Thirty = Batman: Blackest Night

what.

Because The Thing is technically a remake of The Thing From Another World

Finland
>Zohan - Licence to Scissor

>Psycho - The Man Who Became His Mother
That's actually not true
And Die Hard is more like "Skyscraper Assault"

>The groundhog greets you every day

Glad we kept most of them in english here in Latin-America
However
>Fresh Prince of Bel-Air - The Prince of Rap
>Baywatch - Guardians of the Bay

Also more Movies
>The Town - Dangerous Attractions

Not really. But it is called Blackest Night

Ahh that's too bad. I like the idea of trying to sucker your audience

>Balls of Fury - Don't You Touch Me in the Balls.

>Let's play a game if Title Simulator 2000

it sucks when you are watching movie trailers and they put "from the director of The Boss and A Dangerous Situation"

oh yeah sure THOSE movies

>Snow Buntings

What the fuck?

>Minority Report - Previous Sentence

Minority report, ok

From my country:

I refuse to believe this.

Official posters please

In China, The Sixth Sense is called He's a Ghost!

In Hungarian it is "Die Hard - Don't Give Your Life Too Cheaply".

"Drágán add az életed" is basically "sell your / one's life dear".

Hungarian translations can be fucked up, too.

Ok, I found a Hungarian article about this topic, so here are some translations:

Alien - The Eighth Traveller: the Death
The Untouchables - The One Who Defeated Al Capone
Monty Python and the Holy Grail - Gallop on Foot
The Breakfast Club - The Zero Hour
Lola rennt - The Dosh and Lola
Le Boulet - The Ballsy, the Turk, the guard and the woman
Dallas Buyers Club - Before I died

And many, many more.
It's a Hungarian trend that we translate movie titles in a funny way.
So basically who cares what the original title is, let's make a movie related joke and we're good.

But I mostly watch films with subtitles so I don't care anymore.

>>Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind ---> If you dump me, I’ll erase you
I fucking hate that one.
Then again, the original title is also fucking stupid.

Italy has plenty of these, Die Hard was originally translated to "Trappola di Cristallo", Crystal Trap.

With the sequels they stopped translating, once they realized Die Hard isn't that hard to pronounce even for the average Italian.

hmm, I wonder if this might have spoiled something.

>>The Godfather - The Powerful Boss.
Does this concept not exist in this language?

>Man who Came From the Future.
It's not ruining the surprise as much as not making sense. He came from the past.

>Gremlins - Tiny Singaporeans

Is this for real?

That one is bullshit.

The most retarted thing I can think off is that the croatian translation for Harold and Kumar go to White Castle is " American pie made by Harold and Kumar recipe"

Die Hard in poland is Glass Trap. No joke

>mfw Pacific Rim is Titanes del Pacifico here

breddy gool acgutally

I came here to post our silly "Die Hard - Assalto ao Arranha-Céus" translation ( literally "Skyscrapper Hijacking/Assault" ) and a couple more of our crazy subtitles, and I find this gem of a post. Damn I'm proud.

You didn't clarify the fact that these titles aren't fully translated though, usually the "translation" is the subtitle, for the general audience. Like for example, "Toy Story - The Rivals", which did bother me as a young kid because it felt really unnecessary.

I think the most cringe I've seen here is "Kick-Ass: A Superhero with no Superpowers" or that Adam Sandler disney movie "Tales that are not Tales"

Do they STILL do that awful dubbing in the left channel only over the top of the original sound?

isn't that a russian thing

country?

You better belive it brother

"Inception" is a fancy word for "creation" or "origin".

You see, it's more complicated than that.
The Bonus Situation suggests that Parker and Brett weren't actually regarded as passengers of the Nostromo. So, if Jonesy was the 6th passenger, and Alien was the 7th, who was the 8th one?

the alien is the 8th one

Not gonna lie that's an awesome title.

Yep, still on the TV. Gotta love this
