I've never actually heard a good argument against it. They usually all boil down to people just not wanting it to be true really hard. Everything boils down to cause and effect; one action will inevitably cause another action, and if repeated precisely it will always end up the same way. It's just that there are near-infinite causes and near-infinite effects constantly occurring at all times, so it's impossible for someone to ever have enough information to predict/model/trace it all. Seems to me that based on everything we know, determinism is the default position and something else must be proven true in its place to debunk it.

You could say the same of a human. The only difference is that the programming is organically generated and infinitely more complex, or at least just more unknown to us. As I said in an earlier post, it's not hard to imagine a world of gods looking down on their human creation and insisting that because they fully understand our inner workings we cannot possibly be truly conscious or sentient, because we're obviously just slaves to the programming they gave us.

It's all just a matter of perspective. The only difference between a human mind and a robot mind is that we understand the robot mind fully and have the tools to directly control/influence/edit it. That, and as humans we just feel the need to treat ourselves as these special beings above nature, when ultimately we are part of nature and not separate or different from it at all.
