It doesn't work all that well even with computers. Jackson put his actors in barrels and dropped them in the water. Fact is they've taken on the mystical side of Marvel. It's either get your actors really close to the flames and physical effects then layer CGI on top or just go all-out CGI.

Smoke and flame effects at least look better when they're real vs CGI, just look at Expendables 3.

People who saw the 15 minute IMAX preview stated that when Doctor Strange is going through one of his "trips", his face lengthens and goes into his mouth and it starts overlapping. They almost mentioned that he looks at his hands and more hands start growing from the tip of his fingers until there are entire trees of hands growing.

Ditko's Strange was in the 60's not the 70's. Ditko himself was and still is an extreme hardline Randbot objectivist, the guy would eat a bullet before he took hallucinogenic drugs. The Dr. Strange comics were created with talent, creativity and a knowledge of Eastern mysticism and nothing else.

If Marvel really wants to "pay homage" to Ditko's work maybe they should properly credit him as the co-creator of Spider-Man and Strange and pay him the millions in back royalties that they owe him.
