I get a weekly check of $330. I currently have $1960 saved up. I make $12.50 an hour.

I want to save up for a decent car. It would be the first I ever purchased, I have had my license since 17 but never owned a car.

What type of car should I buy and how much should I spend?

At $12.50 an hour. You can't afford a new car payment.
Get something with good gas mileage. Don't spend all your money.

Well, according to the 10% rule, your gross yearly wage is about 25k, so you can spend no more than 10% of that, which is 2.5k.

you can't afford one.

buy a used dependable one you retard.

Should I buy a used car?

How much should I spend on a use done?

Spend all of that cash on a lambo to rent for one day. You won't regret it.

Waste of money

used cars have risk of owner not telling truth if something is not right.

rules of buying used cars
1. ask how much maintenance costed owner.
2.never buy car you can't look inside and outside
3. check if papers are legit.
4.check if car don't have leaks or anything not alright even under car.
5.ask how long this car was used and how daily
6. ask about how much rust it has if owner got it like more than 2 years.
7.ask if you can drive test it with seller where you will drive it (unless you don't fell sure for that he will drive)
8.if something is not alright with sound of car ask about it.

that is pretty much what i can say
also get something with good gas mileage
and cheap maintenance

Get yourself something decent on fuel economy and safety. You don't want a car note, buy it outright and be the king. That way any extra money you have coming your way won't be tied up in your payment.

Do you think a used car lot would be more trustworthy?

This.

Okay guys. I guess I am going to jail.
This is going to be the weirdest shit I will ever have to explain to someone - and I guess it will be the only time I can explain this. Short sorry goes like this:
>be me
>always 0 brainer never good at anything
>get drug addicted and lots of mental problems
>at the age of 18 parents kick me out
>be homeless for 2 years
>my parents tell me if I go to rehab they will allow to stay me with them again if I find a job in a year after getting sober
>decide they can fuck themself
>go to the doctor and tell him I will kill myself (wanted to pretend to have a depression and later tell the doctors it was just a thing because my ex left me bla bla)
>shit didn't work once they got blood from me, they put me to the addicts

PT Cruiser. Econimical, rugged, used, chick-magnets. You can't go wrong with any color really.

Depends on the source. Remember, even grandma's can be super shady.

... nvmd that was my an hero letter. Sorry wrong pasta
I need to buy a new car that's great for camping etc. But it must be as cheap as possible (insurance etc.). What would you recommend?

Stay the fuck away from PT Losers. As a mechanic I'm saying point blank those cars are pieces of shit. I've never seen one over 90,XXX miles that worked right, they're money pits. You'd be better off making a bonfire with all your money.

I paid $1500 for a honda civic. It just had a used motor swap that was $500 and I ended up having to replace the transmission for $400. Overall I paid $2000 and got a really reliable car that was super easy to work on. Also, learn to do your own maintenance

Buy something Japanese. From a private seller or dealership, never a used car lot. Something with less than 80k miles is ideal.

Figure on spending at least 5k for something decent.

get an early 2000's accord, civic or camry make sure it has a 4 banger

Regardless of where you go, don't do a buy here-pay here
I'll explain why they call it "the trap"

1) You'll wind up paying $12,000 for a $4000 car.

2) They dont report to credit bureaus for any of your payments...until you miss a payment. Then they will slam your credit as much as they can so your credit will fall off, then the ONLY place you CAN go is a BHPH

>"GUARANTEED APPROVAL"
Because they make money when people dont make their payments. You can be at 59/60 payments, miss once, and they will resell your car for the amount you bought it for

You talk like a faggot and probably are one too. PT Cruisers are the shit. Perfect machines showcasing the pinnacle of mankind's innovation.

Why Japanese? Not every island owns Island industries you know. England (lol), Hawaii, Cuba etc. They mostly drive stuff with almost no electronics so they can keep on repairing it

Or you could go with a CRV or Rav4. Both are great and economical to own and operate.

Buy Hyundai. Reliable forever, unparalleled warranty, and parts are super inexpensive relative to other makes

This.

If your credit is not shit, you could lease.

Seriously, faggot? Those cars are one of the worst things to come from Chrysler. You must be one of those kitchy homos that adopt the gay lisp and mannerism and appreciation of all things tacky and as fucked up as they are. The car is a piece of shit and I wouldn't wish it on the most flaming homo as their first car. What did you do, buy a PT Cruiser and you didn't have enough left over for your feather bolas and whatever shiny things attracts your eye?
Look OP, you can believe that faggot or you could get a car that will last you and won't cost you $$$$ in the long run. Go Japanese 4 banger and you are batting 1000. Buy some piece of shit Chrysler cast off and you'll be hurting later on.

spend no more than 5k
buy a used mercedes sedan, bmw 330i or ci, NOT xi, any honda is pretty much safe, used mustangs are generally safe if not fox body or niggered out,
here are my suggestions
Golf GTIs, Mitsubishi 3000gt SLs if you can find them unraped, BMW 330i or 325, wouldnt get a 315 or lower, 2001 honda preludes, those things will go up to like 350k miles but premium gas might be expensive so get a civic unraped if you can find it, I honestly wouldnt buy american american cars suck ass, maybe a volvo or volkswagen is your best bet for reliability and comfort if you can find one cheap 5k

That's like renting a renting a house. I don't know but I always want to customize my stuff (paint walls etc.) And don't feel like "can't touch anything I don't own anything". Of course if you move a lot there is no other way then leasing stuff..

Did you know that Toyota is the most American made car in the US?

fuck that user go to a casino and put it all on 1 hand of black jack and buy 2 cars it will work out!

lol...are u like legit retarded? What would you be driving some faggot hipster 4x4? The PT cruiser even comes in a convertabile. A fucking convertible.

So? I'm just saying don't buy anything originally american it doesn't matter where it's manufactured. chevy ford dodge gm etc all suck compared to honda toyota volvo volkswagen mercedes in terms of reliability and bang for the buck

I was just noting that its a surprising fact. Well, surprising to me at least

I bet you carry around drumsticks in PT cruiser and don't even have a drum set or no how to play

2000 to 2500 will get you a decent 'point A to B' car. Don't look for any thrills just dependability.

Do your research. There are auction houses, sale-by-owner cars all over the place.

And when you get it, take car of it. And I don't mean just washing it and putting stupid stuff in it to look good. Learn what it means to maintain a ride, check your vehicle's forums, and do as much of the fixing on it yourself with the aid of tutorials. YouTube is a DIY godsend.

Bottomline: You treat that car like crap, it'll turn into crap.

Start saving your money again, work towards a better job, and eventually, you can use that car as a trade-in for a better one. And so on and so on.

I have an '02 Ford Focus I bought at an auction 8 years ago for 2200. Just changed the struts on it today. I'm getting ready to buy my next car outright. And when I do, the Focus will be set aside as a back-up.

oh yes it is surprising. It's kind of shitty I didnt think japan was one to outsource their manufacturing. but that kinda means a bunch of their economy is based on us. I bet we forced them to outsource it to us after ww2. Japan is stingy about their manufacturing

Fuck no. I carry around a lute.

No, hipster faggots drive PT Losers. I drive a CRV 4WD and a A4 Quattro Turbo, something with real AWD. Both bought as used cars that I went over top to bottom before I bought them. Each was less than $5K and of the two of them the Honda has given me less problems, but the Audi is more fun to drive.

All depends on what your credit score looks like

Loan

Get a starter car, drop a few grand and own it outright, build your credit, climb the job market get a great car in a few years

This is part of the huge reason america is fucked. Hows OP supposed to survive off this shit.

What do your monthly bills look like drop anything that isn't really needed like Hulu or some shit

Don't buy a used car if it's avoidable if it breaks down your shit outa luck

And for the love of God if you get semi new car your gonna be making payments

GET THE FUCKING GAP INSURANCE

Don't know if it's called the same in every state or what ever but the thing where if you wreck your car and it gets totalled they pay off the loan

Buy a used civic or accord. Do not buy a new car, lol.

Honda civic. Reasons previously stated. Or Toyota Corolla or Camry.

I drive a dodge caravan for same reasons. Sure I have my mustang convertible for nice days.. but I'm a grown assed man with money and options and I still drive my sbitty van because it's cheap on parts easy to maintain and I like keeping money in the bank and not having payments.

Dumb as fuck

Whats gonna happen if his car takes a shit on him and he needs drop 3 grand fixing the engine

New cars come with warrantys
Warrantys are stress free

If you can wait a little longer for a car, id wait a bit longer, and save up a bit more, how much can you put away each check?

i think it will be worth it considering alot of the expenses for a car are a bit more than youd expect at first especially when you first get it not to mention cars are a depreciating asset, which brings me to my next point

You have to buy a used car with your budget, but buying a used car is almost always better than buying a brand new one, promise

I would recommend something like a 2005 civic, lots of people sell for low amounts on places like facebook market place

Buy a Camry or one of those cheap used civics. With $5k you can something that'll last a long time.

How about you inspect the car before buying it? Ever heard of that one dummy? Or taking it to a mechanic for inspection? Bring a friend that knows cars.

If you're buying a car without even opening the hood you're a dumbshit. Used cars do not automatically break, and new cars can break just as easily.

1994-1997 Honda Accord. You will pay anywhere from $500 to $2500, reliable as fuck, junkyards are full of them if you need to replace or repair anything and gets great gas mileage

Do you absolutely need a car? There are several expenses outside of the purchase to worry about in the future.

I'm tired of taking public transportation.

then buy an old honda like you should.

go ask /o/

Don't forget about car insurance..that's going to put a dent in your paycheck.

For a Ford Mustang V6 it's only $140 but I heard Fords aren't good on gas

Get an old Honda or Toyota that's been taken care of. These things can easily achieve half a million on the odometer, and they're cheap as dirt all the way around.

Used Toyota Carolla with under 100,000 miles on it.

Buy an early 2000's BMW 3 series that has a good maintenance record and low miles. Nice cars that drive great, but learn to do your own maintenance. Should be able to find one for less than 5k.

Implying a used car isn't prone to breaking down 3 months after getting it

Implying new cars don't come with a warranty

Stop buying shitboxes, I buy used old german cars and haven't had issues. Start inspecting your cars. Things don't ust "break down" lmao.

Fuck off if you don't know what you're talking about.

go and buy yourself a 90-95 honda civic 5 speed with under 200k that isn't riced out. Don't rice it out and properly maintain it and you'll have a good car for years to come. Pic related its my 90 crx that I have owned for 4 years and paid 1400 for. it goes great in the snow and gets 30+mpg city and 40+ highway

Get yourself a 2017 M2. Very cheap, very affordable, amazing first car.

yeh for sure buy a car buy dont go over 4k. no joke they all run like shit unless they are brand new so just get the one you can afford. and btw its way better to do so. theres no point in buying a brand new car unless you have a solid career and house. ect

2018 Ford Raptor

Get a crown Victoria police interceptor. Get one with low miles (100,000) and newish 2008+. You can find one for 2 grand. They are one of the most reliable cars and have a v8 engine. Easy to work on. Find a lot of Parts for em. Limited slip differential. Look on Craigslist.

If you really want a newer car, you can get a 2016 VW Passat for pretty cheap. I'm looking at getting rid of my Volvo for a 2017 R-Line in June. Insurance is cheap as fuck on them, maintenance is toyota level cheap, and it's not a sports car, but the ones I've driven have been responsive and fun to drive.

Every $1500 old Toyota I bought growing up (1991 MR2, 1990 Corolla GTS, 1992 Celica GTS, 1990 4Runner) had over 150k miles when I got it and lasted me for at least 2 years of heavy abuse before they started having issues. Then I could have fixed them, but they'd paid for themselves, so I just sold or scrapped and moved on. Old Toyota ftw

I don't know how to drive a manual car

Doesn't have to be an interceptor, but you can score one in an auction. Anything panther platform is legit

learn.

Is manual better?

Its easy to learn and much better. With a manual trans you'll also save money by just having to replace a clutch every few years (depending on driving patterns and habits) compared to auto vehicles that have much more components that can break down resulting in $$$$ to fix. Once you drive a manual you will be bored in anything else.

then buy one with an auto

everyone is telling you the same thing its time to start listening

Ya but interceptor has better suspension and limited slip diff and no speed governor. But yea Panther ftw

A lot of the times they will also remove the beefed up motor and put the stock back in so the miles really only apply to the suped up body mods. My uncle bought an old caprice interceptor in the early 2000's that the Fuzz had put 245k on before they pulled it from service and put the stock motor back in. It is at somewhere between 390-400k now and going strong.

try to score something that was used by State troopers rather than your local pd. Highway miles are much better than the rest local pd will acquire

You obviously dont make enough money to shell out a monthly car payment on a 2017-2018 with a warranty like some people are suggesting. Not to mention insurance is gonna be shitty for such a young driver. Late 90s early 2000s civics, accords, crvs are all tested tried and true when it comes to used cars and can be found in good condition for anywhere from 1 to 3 grand. Try to steer away from the automatics. Cant speak too much on corollas or camrys as ive never owned one but they are also extremely reliable as are most older toyotas. Make friends with a mechanic that can inspect a car with you if you decide to go the used car route. Learn to do your own maintenance, learning how to change your own oil, filters, fluids, brakes ect. can save you a lot of money in the long run and is a good skill to have anyways. Dont listen to all these faggots saying that used cars are prone to breaking down, my first car was a manual honda civic with 130 thousand miles that i drove hard for 4 years, that was four years of me driving like a pissed off teenager and it never missed a beat until the day i drove it into the back of a truck.

Yeah, has pros. I've always wanted one just never got around to it.

I'm gunna give you the best god damn advice you can use. You're gunna have to get something used. There is no avoiding this.
>Give yourself a HARD budget. For your situation, I'd say no more than 4k
>Pick maybe 3 or 4 reliable models with good gas mileage
>Look for good deals on those and don't get anything with more than 150k miles on it.
>Apply for auto loans now. Apply at 3 or 4 different local credit unions.
Once you apply for an auto loan, you've got something like a 30 day period where you can get as many car loan inquiries as you want and it only counts for one. So shop around for the best APR rate you can find. First time car buyer with decent credit should expect AROUND 4-9%.
Get your payments around $200/month or less. Anything more on your salary and you will be hurting for a fuckin squirtin and regret your decisions. Put a grand as a down payment if you're comfortable with it.
>Look for older Mazda 3's, older Honda Civics, older Toyota Corollas. Look for the type of car that is common, reliable, good on gas, has cheap repairs, and could expect to last you to 200k miles and beyond.
I'm telling you now, spend more than like 5k or buy something not reliable and you're going to regret the shit out of your decisions.

really get a used EV you can find a good used EV for 3 to 7K and the cars pay for them self in gas saved .

i got a 2014 chevy volt for 5K$ and it only had 16K miles on it and in the 3 year i have owned it it has payed for it self in gas saved

really look into it even more so if your power is free or if there are free charging around .

>buy a used mercedes sedan, bmw 330i

Good job

This youtube.com/watch?v=K_ZXBlYo2FA

Never trust a warranty, at least not from Hyundai. I worked for them, and they're trash. Use Kelly Blue Book or a similar service to find a trustworthy model and go that. Unless it's a Hyundai, then just assume they're lying, and choose something else.

I'm a mechanic by trade and I hope my advice will find you well my friend.
1. Don't get too excited with the prospect of buying a car and gloss over the important things. That is and will always be rule 1.
2. Look, listen, feel. It's what they teach in EMT school to do before CPR and it's just as useful here. Look for any fluids that are leaking, the condition of the hoses and parts e.t.c. Listen for any noise. A slapping, a pinging, a knocking e.t.c. feel when you drive it for any vibrations any excessive body roll, any vibrating e.t.c.
3. Ask for the owner to let you start it cold and then listen while it warms up. A warm engine tends to mask skeletons in closets.

First and foremost your car is a tool and functionality should be key, don't think the coolest car is the best car. Second, use this car to gain technical knowledge. Learn to do maintenance and keep up with it, the car will last if you keep it well kept.
Again, I hope this helps and leaves little to the imagination as far as making sure it isn't a lemon. In my experience an import (especially Nissan) is cheap, decent build quality, and is difficult to kill.

Best of luck,
Brian

>1991-1996 Buick Roadmaster

Cheapest one I found was for 3000 I'll definitely keep an eye out on this car thanks for the info

Go to CarMax and get a good used Corolla or Sentra

this is bait,

By a factor of 10. It's not that hard to learn.

Can confirm
2012 altima, best car I've had. They can be found cheap, and the parts are cheap cause there are millions of them.

I paid 1500 for a scratch on the bumper. Don't text and drive..

Well I paid half, my old company paid the other half.

Im still pissed.

Hard to say

Check out a 1996 Buick Park Avenue Ultra.

youtube.com/watch?v=5lRLmlM8o5Q

Get Honda accord. I've got an 09 coupe 3.5 v6 6spd

LOL

Thank you I'll take all of this into consideration. Everyone here has said to learn to do maintenance yourself, so that's something I'll be doing. Would you say paying for a pre inspection from a mechanic shop would be a good idea?

Yeah

There is like a dedicated board for this. There is also Reddit.

Is that your car? What's all that shit leaking on the ground in that pic?

...

Do you have any friends that are mechanically inclined? I'm not sure of your location but out here in BFE Kansas everyone at least knows a car guy. It all depends on how much you are paying for the car and how much it costs to get an inspection. I would recommend watching YouTube videos on what to look for when buying a car. If they say listen for a misfire (which sounds like a ping) YouTube what a misfire sounds like. In doing so you'll be able to figure out what the sound is specifically. Also, if you're in the US of A lots of places will read codes. That's a trap to make you buy a part. 9 times out of 10 there is something that's causing the code to be thrown elsewhere in the system and the part that is shown as the malfunction is actually working fine.
In short, the mechanic check you can typically do yourself by looking, and looking intently. Bring a flashlight and look under the car at the rubber boots, bushings, e.t.c. You can do the same thing a mechanic can by doing minimal research yourself.

Again, best of luck in your hunt my friend,
Brian

Yeah, thats a pic of my car. The shit in my drive way is just water lol. Just washed it lmao.

/o/ is cool but its one of the least active boards. Expect a reply in ~ 24 hours.

This is assuming you live at home and don't have any real bills to worry about.
I'd probably get a Toyota Camry. There's a reason you see a million of those out on the road.

You're assumption is right but I do pay $134 a month towards internet and phone bill.

Used do suck and new are bad as well.

What about Prius?

Before you buy, try to get pre-approved for a loan at an actual bank. The loans you get with the dealership are balls.
Bonus if your parents co-sign

nah son thats oil of some type. Gotta maintain my man

White, 1973, Chevrolet Chevelle, thank me later

What about a 1998 Saturn SL 4Dr for $1955 144k miles on it. No accidents reported. Used car lot.

Get a certified pre owned Honda civic. Good mileage, not too expensive, safe, and you can run those things into the ground

$1500

140k miles

It's water. My car only has 30K miles on it, and maintenance has been done regularly. The previous owner still had the dealer stickers in the glovebox from when they bought it off the showroom floor in late 2011.. The previous owner was a elderly lady who only drove it close to home and seldomly at that.. It runs like a top.

Once you decide on what kind of car you want learn how to look at a used car: look under the oil cap for signs of moisture, underneath with a flashlight for signs of leaks, etc. Also Carfax provides the vehicles history and will tell you if the title is clean or if the car has been in a wreck among other things. It costs money but is worth it in the long run. Also there are a lot of YouTube videos on what to look for in specific makes and models when buying used. Put a little effort in and you'll end up with a decent vehicle for a decent price.

No volkswagons!!! No reconstructed titles and check Tie-rods ends and cv joints!!!!!!

Companies to stick to: Toyota, Subaru, and Honda. They just run good without too much maintenance. Best bet would be a Honda Civic or and Accord from late 90s to early 2000s. Dirt cheap, great gas mileage, and you can beat the shit out of them and they still run. 2k will get you a good car, hell if you got a good eye for cars you could go as low as 1k. Hit up craigslist, facebook market, letgo, etc. See whats for sale around where you live and go from there.

What type of subaru should I look for?

youtube.com/watch?v=-K7v6UzU2Mk

Stay away from the turbo Subarus. Stick with the older sohc 2.2s and the dohc 2.5s
