socks essentially have 2 functions. First they provide insulation, second they fill in empty space in a shoe or skate.

the first isn't a consideration when skating indoor races. the second isn't either, because pro's have skates that are custom fitted to their feet.

you want skin on shoe in order to secure the best possible fit. if you add layers it might be more comfortable, but you end up with a worse fit, meaning you are less connected with the blade ultimately the ice.

Nobody says that. The reason is because we're historically not competitive on this distance. And the reason for that is because we used to train pupils to become all-rounders , ie compete in several distances, as opposed to specialization on one distance.

on lane luck: there's actually two things going on. biomechanically speaking, finishing in the inside lane is actually a disadvantage because that is where your speed is highest, and skating a narrow turn becomes more difficult (hence why inside skaters often go wide coming out of the final turn). this disadvantage is only very slight though (like -/100s of a second). the main advantage lies in being able to draft the rider in front of you on the straight. so you kinda need double luck, first you need to start outside, then you need to end up behind the other rider at a good drafting distance after the first turn. this second factor is much more relevant, anywhere from .1 to .3 seconds. Essentially, this means that most skaters that finish inside have an advantage anywhere from a few hundred to a couple of tenths of a second. this is without taking into account the psychological advantage that some people get from being able to chase someone.

that said, you can't actually control the other rider, so you need 'double luck' essentially. First a lucky draw, and secondly a lucky opponent that rides the exact right pace to give you an optimal draft. personally i don't really care that much about the 500m, but it is definitely true that luck of the draw plays a role

The 500m is also just famously unpredictable, especially on the men's race. There's usually only 0,3 seconds between the first and tenth place. The difference between inner and outer lane can mean gold or bronze, or even twelfth.
In the women's race the differences are bigger, so I don't think the inner/outer discussion is that important but it's still relevant. The aerodynamics are much more important in the men's field where you have guys that are 185 cm+ and 85 kg.
I just hope that someone smashes the OR tomorrow.
