102 events

>102 events
>51 skiing events
>10 snowboarding events (which is essentially just skiing on one plank instead of two)
>27 skating events
>9 sledding events
>the remaining events are either in ice hockey or curling
Couldn't they have come up with a bit more variety for the Winter Olympics?

>Many other sports that are rarer or less commonly thought of as winter sports today were also included, such as horse-driven sledding, hunting, skiing behind reindeers, military sports, car racing, motorcycle racing, ballooning, kick-sled, and pulka racing.

It's all just filler. They couldn't have just ice hockey so they had to put in a bunch of irrelevant "sports"

It's all just filler. They couldn't have just snowboarding so they had to put in a bunch of irrelevant "sports"

holiday stonerplank isn't a sport

> calling women's doubles skeleton, 500m speed skating and slopestyle snowboarding "irrelevant"
Pleb

Many reasons I don't watch the shit but this is the main one. There's other things to do competitively in snow other than ski, skate, or sled time trial race against each other. But I despise time trial sports. Imagine how awesome bobsledding would be if they raced against each other.

No. It keeps retarded Anglo-Americans away

>he thinks Olympic hockey is at all relevant

What new sports do you want them to introduce?

>no snowball fight
>no competitive snowman building
>no snow angel making
>no icicle fencing

Nice "winter" "olympics" there.

The time trial events aren't nearly as bad as the judged events (which make up about a quarter of the events). If the outcome is subjective, it is not a sport and should not be at the Olympics. Plus you can't really have two bobsleighs on the same track in a race, that's just an accident waiting to happen.

I know it's not really correct, but by time trial I meant anything where one person goes at a time(including judged sports)

And yeah, judged "sports" are arts, like judging a painting, not a sport

>no Olympic Snow Shovelling
whoever shovels the most in the time limit wins

team and individual snowball fighting would be kino

Well yeah bobsleds as they currently are you couldn't but maybe they should have some imagination and rethink it. Make them easier to control, track wider, I don't fucking know but you can't sit here and tell me it couldn't be reinvented like that

Luge/skeleton ski jumping. Doubles.

Sledding is all about using gravity to propel you down a slope. Because you're going at such high speeds, the slightest steering can drastically affect your time and that's where the challenge comes from. If you give the pilot more control then it's no longer a sled. Besides, look at how many accidents occur in short track speed skating. Racing multiple people together in most winter sports is just not a good idea because the athletes don't have the same stability that you have in summer sports.

So I recently got into Figure Skating because of this Winter Olympics.

How the fuck do you follow it in the regular competitive season?

Any sports with judges shouldn't be there. It's so stupid that you could do the exact same routine with the same perfection and have a Russian judge decide you get a lower score than you deserve. I only enjoy hockey, curling and the time based races because you don't have everybody waiting to see the judge feels you should be given.

you don't follow any of these sports during regular season except for ice hockey and the various skiing world championships

Summer Olympics is just running and swimming. Those aren't even sports or remotely entertaining.

they do icecapade type touring shows

If there is something that defines the Olympics it's that there are many different sports. Real sports. Like dodging rocks with a canoe, riding a sailboat, shooting at clay dishes with an air pistol, dancing with a horse, jumping on your BMX, bouncing on a trampoline, etc.

>throwing
>cycling
>gymnastics
>hockey
>football
>tennis
>shooting
>archery
>weightlifting
>boxing
>martial arts
>badminton
>golf
>rowing
>volleyball
>rugby
>handball
You can question the legitimacy of some of these sports in the same way that you can question the legitimacy of pretty much every Winter Olympic sport (especially if you come from a country that is only good at Winter Olympic sports and feels the need to shit on the real Olympics). But only a brainlet would claim that Summer Olympic sports have no variety.

>306 events
>202 on foot events
>46 swimming events
>40 boating events
>18 bikes events
>6 horse events
Couldn't they have come up with a bit more variety for the Summer Olympics?

I agree, too many swimming events.

>people complaining about muh meme sports
That's what the olympics are though. Basically any sport can join. Which is why following the medal count is silly. Just watch the big events

>implying football is anything like tennis or rugby sevens or javelin
Awful post

why no ice speedway?

>Anglo-American 'intellectuals' genuinely dont see variety in winter sports because of what happens to be on the athletes feet

When will you mongrels learn that the world doesnt want you here? Planet earth could be a paradise if you took your shitty unintelligent grunting to the moon, and the chemically altered slosh that you call cuisine with it.

To clarify; Canada can stay

>women's doubles skeleton
is this a thing because my boner wants it to be

why no motor sports in the Summer Olympics?

If you honestly believe the diversity in events in the Winter Olympics is massive then you're deluded. Obviously ski jumping isn't the same as cross-country skiing in the same way that long jump isn't the same as the marathon. But the summer Olympics have other sports that are completely different from athletics. Winter Olympics only really has curling and ice hockey.

Only good Summer Olympic sport hwre is Volleyball.
Tennis is good, but its not really a big deal compared to grand slam tournaments. Dont know why you randomly included hockey (winter). And While I like Rugby Olympic rugby is what 7s? Its a glorified trackmeet m80.

why indeed

Meanwhile the Winter Olympics has nothing. It's just skiing, sledding and the second-most popular version of hockey.

>motor
>sport
You will never see any motor event in the Olympics. There's enough meme events already, we need a purge more than adding stupid entertainments.

I read here a few days ago that they're considering Snow Volleyball for future games.

kick-sled sounds like some Cred Forums meme name

Wow you seem upset.
Imagine having Andy Murray as the only athlete from your entire Country.

The Olympics are basically just the Island of Misfit Sports. Hockey and soccer are just in there to pad the ratings.

there's a grand prix every year, just look up the schedule on the official isu site.
to get into the olympics one of the requirements is that they have to have regular competitions and world championships.

Ice Volleyball is coming in 2022

There is the Grand Prix series in November/December, US Nationals is usually in mid-January and Worlds are in early April.

>Spark as Olympic sport.

Kek.

Tbh, the only true games are the Winter Olympics because you can only do these events in the winter when there is snow (aside from the ones inside an arena).

All the summer events can be done during the winter. There is nothing inherently "summer" about them. You can long jump in the winter, you can swim in the winter, you can javelin in the winter, and so on and so forth.

Regardless, what sports do you think we can add to the winter schedule?

How about swimming? Like, there is an outdoor swimming even in the summer olympics, how about we have a similar one in the winter olympics?

Call it the Polar Bear 10k. It can be in outdoor lanes, or it can be done in a long channel with everyone going in one lane.

They had a dog race as a demonstration sport once. Maybe they can bring it back.

People who like soccer don't like Olympic soccer because its just a proving ground for kids that aren't ready for real soccer. Olympics fucked themselves by relegating hockey to that status

>never rode a spark
lmao, fucking new worlders

The X-games portion of the winter olympics is a throwaway. half pipe snowboarding, half pipe skiing basically any snowboarding of any kind.

Basically every gold that the US has is a throwaway X-game gold medal besides Shiffrin in the slalom

It makes me sick to see the sap stories of these american saps moving their entire familly to lake tahoe to train as a big air snowboarding specialist to possibly win a gold medal once or twice in their entire lives, like lmao what are they doing for the rest of their life

This can be said about nearly every Olympic event that doesn't have a corresponding major league behind it. In fact its less accurate because those people can compete in X-Games and similar events every single year of their sporting life. World Championships in other events are way less relevant

Building snow castle and then defend it

you don't get into a fringe sport just for the olympics retard

it's a hobby that then becomes serious, olympics are amazing for any athlete but these guys in particular probably care more about the X Games, they care way more about their usual circuit than a once-every-four-fucking-years event where all their extended family will be watching for once.

ignorant retard, what are you doing with your life

Alpine is nothing like cross country either like the retard implied. Same goes for ski jump

I mean, if you make it on the podium at all, especially if you get the gold, you'll be a sought after coach for the rest of your life.

And this is pretty much a guaranteed job that you can have as a backup in the event that the other avenues of income that you want to pursue after the Olympics fail.

I know CBC has gotten better at hiring former Olympians as commentators during sporting events. If you look at the CBC list of commentators for these Olympics, it's long and full of former athletes.

If you've done well in multiple Olympics, you can be sure that you'll be getting endorsements, sponsorships, and commercial/product deals for the remaining of your active competitive sporting life.

Now that's an awful post

Basketball on ice. Handegg on ice. School shooting on ice.

Judged events can have bullshit results agreed. Would mean gymnastics fromm summer would need removing

No money for sports, so you didn't develop right?

how is sleigh racing not in the fucking winter olympics? literally the closest thing we could have to modern chariot races

Way too many skii events for Norges to stack up gold on.

And there's only about 40 swimming events in the summer (more than 10%) for summer olympics for Americans to stack gold.

Yeah, I always love finding about sports that I didn't really know about in the olympics, but it's hard to keep up with some of them; I also wish we had threads about them here even outside this period.
