NHL is where the supposed "best" players are but Kovalchuk and Datsyuk and other really talented players play in other leagues because they are closer to home or they get payed more money. The ice you see here is what the NHL should use, its 13 feet wider so it allows for more speedy players to flourish.

After a little bit of research, I've found there were about 185000 field hockey (combined indoor/outdoor) players in Australia as of 2006. In comparison, there were just over 4000 ice hockey players as of 2017. Quite a difference.
