The 1 is about overwatch DPS. 2s have great DPS for their heat, especially with the cooldown quirk. The ERs are so you can keep some distance. If you get close you're dead. And damage means nothing if its spread out, see LRM boats.

Generally its legs that have less armor. But you should be focusing on the smaller targets, mediums and heavies. Leave the assaults to the assaults, you are DPS fire support. The more out of the way you are, the less likely you are targetted, the easier it is for you to lay down fire.
5e makes you powerful from the get go, has less customisation and is, to me, less fun.

AC/10 on the right with 5 tons of ammo, 4 medium lasers with double heatsinks, 2jj ferro armor and endo-steel structure. believe it or not but I can max out my armor for everything but my legs.
I punch thru armor with the cannon and chew thru the internals with the lasers

Its really supposed to be the opposite. If you wanted real punch should have gotten a 3, 3 LPLs is nothing to sneeze at. Best Medium I have in terms of an alpha strike is my Stormcroiw / Hunch IIC. 2 heavy large lasers, 4 heavy mediums. If you stand still it fucks you up. My favourite mechs are my Godzilla (Annihilator 4x LB10 and a snub PPC) and my Marauder Scorch (4 SRM6 and 2x LB20). Im sad they made gauss PPC heat stack.

Not a whole lot. This is far more quality of life and a handle on when to rejoin to remove the bag.
Id say Deathstrike and run 2 Gauss 4 HML, but I guess MC is out for you. I run the 2 with the same loadout as the Scorch, but others are possible. TBRs are pretty reliable heavies, fast for their size, good hitboxes and enough hardpoints and variants to change roles effectively.
