that's quite easy: I tend to buy stuff I'll probably need once a lifetime for a lot of money.
for example I bought a specialized mesaurement adaptor for a multimeter I don't even own (right now....).
I bought an obsolete calibration fixture I'll probably need 4x in my lifetime for 300€ (and I still have to fix it!).
I bought a signal generator and a multimeter from the US while by now I have better equipment (at least both were owned before by NASA) (~ 200€).
I bought two messed up oscilloscopes (they are modified by the preowner in a way that their special feature is destroyed) for 100€.

I also liked Lego when I was a kid.
I remember I had a bag full of pieces. I actually started and built everything that came to mind (cable cars, ships, planes, houses ...) but I did not have a scheme to guide me. Probably I had received them like this and several Lego projects had been mixed there and I no longer had the construction schemes. Now I have seen that there are projects with sketches that you can follow.
