Obviously it's just guidelines and if you go to a restaurant that offers a greater degree of service you should tip a higher percentage, but at the kind of place where a meal for 2 comes out to $65 chances are they are just taking my order and bringing me one or two plates and a drink without tending to me through the meal without being flagged down.

When I was working as a waiter sometimes we got short staffed or I just got swamped. It's not that I didn't want to give exceptional service, its just that I only had 2 arms and that was it. I perfectly understood only getting a 10% tip in that situation, just so long as the table turned quickly enough? It's cool.

What absolutely killed me were the karens and kens that would come in and expect service as if they were the only table in the entire restaurant deserving of service and then leave a couple dollars at the end of a $80 meal.

It was like a black hole that sucked up not only my will to live, but since I spent so much time catering to their needs, the service of all my other tables suffered so it's really like I got anti-tipped because of them.

I tell you what: I can accept a lousy tip if you're not a total karen or ken or you have the good sense to not just let your kid cry nonstop for 20 minutes without a single shred of concern for the waitstaff and fellow patrons.

what I thought was bullshit is how a waitress got indignant, my wife and I had a night out and the bill was $185, we left a $25 tip which we thought was enough since we only spent about an hour at the restaurant, our waitress said our tip was to small for how much we ordered, but are two meals and an expensive bottle of wine and a tiramisu worth more than $25 to carry to us?

Usually not, although there are some places that are buffets that expect you to tip the people that bus the tables and I really don't think that deserves the usual ~20% that I give.

Usually I do 20% and then round the whole bill up to the next dollar, so a bill that's $9 would be $11.63 after tax and 20% tip, so I'd round it to $12 and the total tip would be $2.17, or about 24%. It sounds complicated but it's actually pretty easy to guess what the final total will be and subtract the subtotal and tax to get the tip amount.
