Why are people assuming they'll never come back to Gravity Falls? The Stans can't be traveling the whole time, they'll probably have a home base at the Shack and Soos is still there.

Even if they don't, the Stans clearly care about them and when they get a bit older I can absolutely see them being invited along on their misadventures and eventually taking over the mantle.

The main problems are the Mabel episode and the pacing.

1) Remove all the dumb filler episodes like DD&MD and Stanchurian Candidate, and Roadside Attraction and focus more on building up Ford and the growing divide between the siblings. Dipper and Mabel vs The Future thru the end of Weirdmageddon should be closer to six episodes instead of four. Take the time to build on Gideon's crisis of conscience, give the audience a chance to actually miss and fear for Mabel, actually build and incorporate lore like the wheel and shit into the plot of the episodes - tracking down and rescuing the other members of the wheel etc.

2) Go with the more subdued version of the Dream Prison. There's no hip eighties theme or magic or Dippy Fresh. Dipper and Mabel each live out their ideal Summer in Gravity Falls. Mabel is spending all day with Dipper and her friends, having epic Summer romances, etc. Dipper is out solving mysteries with Ford, scoring points with Wendy, yadda yadda. The final act is both of them realizing that these fantasies are shallow and empty and will never be as satisfying or meaningful as the adventures they had and the friends they've made and are counting on them in the real world. The real Dipper and Mabel confront each other, confess that they're both terrified of the future and growing up and leaving friends behind, but promise that they'll always be there to face the future together and leave the Dream Prison together to face Bill with their friends.

Ideally you have a Season 3. It fleshes out Ford and Wendy, takes the Pacifica arc somewhere, takes the Mabel and Dipper conflict arc somewhere. The Mabelland episode is more emotionally affecting and they do justice to Mabel's character overall.

The Mabel Land episode could have had jokes, but except for the courtroom scene, it lacked an emotional center.

I think the main thing is it didn't really address Mabel's fear of growing up and especially her realization that one day she and Dipper will not be as close.

I wonder if they avoided really touching that because it's some heavy shit. But it's also what made Dipper and Mabel vs. the Future so effective. Weirdmageddon 2 discarded the issues in that episode in favor of some hastily thrown together fantasy vs. reality which wasn't the main conflict. If anything, Mabel was more in touch with "real life" during the series. She's just happy with her reality right now.

Imagine an episode that distracted all the characters with real things. For Wendy, maybe her mom. For Mabel, maybe a summer that lasts forever, and she thinks its real and has to be convinced out of it.

They missed a lot of chances for something deeper and more moving. Even worse, that episode was really the finale for Dipper and Mabel's characters. The last part was all about Stan and Ford...whose relationship never got time to be fleshed out, so we weren't as invested in it.
