Diaz is a fantastic case study in how a terrible personality can cripple the chances of even someone relatively talented. Sure we take the piss out of say, Dobson, but has has both a severe lack of talent AND charisma. Diaz is actually not that bad of an artist, he's just such an insufferable prick - If he was less thin-skinned and preachy and more laid-back, humble and dismissive of bullshit twitter drama people probably wouldn't have a problem with the guy.

In a way I'm glad to have lived through the era of virtue signalling holier than thou SJWs, because it taught me valuable lessons about how NOT to behave as a person who actually wants to work in the creative industries. Make friends not enemies. Agree to disagree. Have a sense of humour about yourself and don't make things personal. When you're a celebrity (a Z-List Internet celebrity, yes, but a celebrity of some degree), you no longer get to hide behind that cloak. I first became aware of Dresden Codak about ten years ago and this is one if the first comics I read. It came across as shallow and pedantic, as if it was written entirely for the purpose of convincing the reader that the artist if just so, so smart. "Intellectual humor! Ha ha. But, also, nerd humor so it's relatable. Look at all of these super smart people doing the kind of things you do, but philosophically, because I read a Wikipedia article on Baruch Spinoza one time."

I didn't give it a while lot of additional thought at the time but, as I became regular on Cred Forums, I got to witness some of these Twitter blowups as they happened. is still my favorite but was pretty great, too.

I think that is a legitimate interpretation of his work, I'm not a literary critic (basically finished HS and been working my ass off since then) but that seems to be what Eisner was getting at right? I don't see why Diaz wouldn't appreciate the quality of the storytelling. It tells a truth that is relevant today without talking down to its audience.

What, the stories where Spirit was on the moon? By that point Eisner wasn't writing or drawing the comic (and he was thinking of ending the feature altogether in favor of doing a different project); Jules Feiffer was writing it and Wally Wood was brought in to do the art. Eisner was generally an editor by then (and remember that at the time--and even still today--comic strips employed ghost artists and writers to assist and it was seen as part of the career; you get successful, you can hire other people to work on your stuff).

Those comics are still worth looking at for the Wally Wood art alone.

I wouldn't say it's completely bad; I mean it's not bad as a light read but a very far cry from Eisner's own Spirit stories during the late 40's. I've yet to get around to reading all of The Spirit so I can't say for sure how all the Eisner and non-Eisner stuff stacks up.

Fun fact: The dictator on the moon was originally intended to be Hitler. But Eisner felt the "Hitler is still alive" story device became a cliche by then, so he went in and edited the art and text to make it a generic dictator instead.
