There are very subtle differences between the characters that no amount of experience will change for Steven. It's just enough to drastically alter how things would have played out. Steven is very kind and altruistic and always trying to do the right thing, but he's also materialistic, someone who clearly holds a grudge, and not a pacifist by any means. The biggest difference, though, is Steven doesn't have the same compulsive disorders Wander has. There's a difference between wanting to help, and needing to help.
