A lot of the draw to Adventure Time was the plotline with Flame Princess and how they really broke up and it didn't just end up okay. After they resolved like a half season of depression Finn loses his arm. More depression but instead of coming to terms with it a bee wants to fuck his stump flower and they go to the formulaic 'everything will be alright' cliche where the plot is neatly fixed in 11 minutes.
In Stakes, Marceline chooses to stop being a vampire. At the end of the series she is a vampire, and none of the characters introduced survived. Nothing of value was gained from the miniseries except for knowing a little more between Marceline leaving Simon and meeting Finn and Jake.

So, what is going on in AT anyway? Kinda fell off of it around the Lich getting turned into a baby or something. And Finn's arm getting ripped off, and having the father of the year.

Fiona and Cake was the start of the downfall of this series.

Finn gets his arm back, still hates his father but he accepts that that's okay and that he won't be what he thinks a father should be, learns he's some sort of incarnation of a mystical comet, is given the choice to be that comet again, but decides to stay as he is because life is great, or something. Personally, that last bit was better than it sounds, though it was a bit pretentious. Finn getting his arm back was just weirdness all around. After that, though, Finn kind of goes back to being just an all around cool guy accepting shit as it comes, with a little less teen angst and relationship drama. Lately, his Finn sword broke, and he kind of got depressed about it, but he got over it and now he's just doing his thing.
PB loses her kingdom because her subjects are idiots who actually elected the King Of OOO as princess. While away from her kingdom, she tries to be more open with others, as well as becoming less of a cold dictator and more like a person you could actually talk to. Eventually, at the end of Stakes, she does take back her kingdom and there's a nice moment where all the candy people look up to her and fight for her. Lately she's working on being a kinder ruler, and is kind of just chilling.
Marceline had her whole Stakes thing where she questions keeping her mortality. Before that there was some more Bubbline stuff, I guess, and we're shown how their relationship has changed over time: how Marceline's pretty much the same while PB, slowly, is still growing as a person. During Stakes we get a bit of Vampire hunting, and how the world and the land of OOO is in a long but perpetual loop where "no one ever learns anything". There's some stuff about growing up and making your own decisions. Lately, Marceline's just kind of chilling.
Jake is still sort of lazy as ever, but he got an episode with one of his kids where he accepts that he's an adult with kids and some parts of his younger self he has to bury in the past. Lately, he's chilling.

May ruin his character if you really liked Magic Man, but I think of it as sort of a Jmoyns send-off episode.
There's also some stuff about Ice King. As Magic Man, Betty steals IK's crown, messes with it's "programming", and infects it with a virus. This then leads to an episode where we see inside the crown getting a look at past owners, as well as what it's like for a person's mind tobe trapped there. Anyway, Marceline and PB do some stuff and now the crown has a mini Betty head in it. We don't know how that affects IK, and now he's just chilling.
BMO got an episode about himself, and how he could grow up or whether he should grow up, or what that even means. This sparked on his birthday where he learns that his creator, Mo, has died. There was also an episode about what BMO does on his own and how crazy he kind of is. Now he's just kind of chilling.
Basically, everyone is chilling and nothing's happening until the season finale, which they won't say when they'll air. It's not why, but, ignoring the fluctuation of subjective quality, it is a contribution to why the AT fandom is pretty silent. Not much to work. It'll involve Susan Strong and is likely going to have to do with her cybernetics and her past. People think Finn's mom will also be brought up.
Yeah, Me-Mow grew up but with the same voice. Stopped being an assassin and is now a bounty hunter or something.
The girl with horns was Bandit Princess. She stole the Finn Sword after Finn dropped it while doing sword tricks. She's just kind of a dick to everyone. She and Finn fight, Finn using the grass sword, and during the fight Finn stabs the Finn Sword, basically killing himself. Then she just kind of fucks off.

probably, i tuned out of Adventure Time around the time Finn and Flame Princess fizzled out but not for these reasons. i was speaking more to my concerns about Bubbeline. i know the writers wanted it and the execs rejected it several years ago. i was speaking more to how if it was a thing now it would be a marketing thing, not because everyone was truly on board because it was something they were passionate about.

there's probably a discussion to be had about the creative staff vs the executives too. i'm not preaching gospel here, just observing trends in media as a whole.

that's my issue, and plays into your second greentext. a company will put a gay or trans person in something and then parade them around to show how progressive they are. look at the Nate guy in the latest Assassin's Creed game. he was honestly a nobody side character, but Ubisoft was championing him as some huge political thing when he was boring and it felt cheap and pandering. it would have been way more interesting to keep quiet about it and have people realize after the fact, "oh, there's a trans guy in the game! and he's just there. because trans people just exist, they aren't tokens or marketing tools."

I think you're looking too far into it, why it hasn't happened yet is something only the writers would know. We are practically a season behind bubbline wise, season 6 pretty much droppes bubbline, and season 7 compensated for it. its a point n click, you have a task you need to accomplish so you run around the area looking for items to combine or solve the puzzle to progress. And there is some combat also but its really simple wave based stuff, you just mash attack and that will get you through, its very shallow and yet it feels exactly the way finn fights.
