Even if someone was bulletproof wouldn't the force of the bullet at least stagger them?

I like the way you think, but capeshit is escapism.

It depends on how obedient they are to the laws of physics. Most invincible people are also "immovable objects", you'd need something with enough force to harm them in order to effect them at all.

There are some good exceptions to this, such as in one of the Marvel comics Hulk kicking an invincible person across the country

Well...Aquaman has super strength on top of durability does he not? The force of a bullet is probably not more than the force he can exert himself

This is always what's interesting about Spider-Man....he can be crushed by tons of weight and come out mostly fine and a couple rips in his costume, take super powered slugs without a mere dent in his skull, yet he will be killed if shot and hit

no bullets are made to pierce and object with little force distribution so if its bouncing off of them they wont be moving much unless they flinch

Your standard 5.56x45 nato round goes on average about 3000ft/s out of a 16" barrel.

To put that into perspective, that's about 0.5681 miles per second, which ends up being about 2045mph, most cars can barely push 160mph when you floor it.

Now keep in mind all that force is being concentrated into a projectile that's less than a quarter of an inch in diameter.

Even if a hero had AR500 steel-tier skin a bullet would probably put him right on his ass and leave him winded.

>four separate lines about the speed of a bullet
>no mention of the bullet's weight
I don't think you understand the question

The physics of this is very simple:
'equal and opposite reaction - no matter what the muzzle velocity of the round, no matter what the caliber, no matter what you've seen in movies the force of the projectile's impact can never exceed the kickback of the gun/rifle/cannon, that's just physics.
Yeah, there are guns that will drop you on your ass when you fire them if you aren't braced or are too lightweight but most don't even have that kick.

At that level of speed, weight becomes less and less relevant. Putting this into perspective: a pressurized water jet can cut through steel.

No you idiot. People don't fly back when they get bullets shot into them in real life, they do it in Hollywood because it's dramatic, but the force wouldn't move you at all.

That's density, not weight
And water's density isn't spectacularly low
Why would you make that comparison

The reason bullets don't move people in real life is because their bodies give way to the boolit, the energy slow dissipates. If a bullet was stopped dead in it's tracks all that energy would instantly transfer to the surface.

It's why when people wearing plate carrier gets shot they don't get penetration but still end up winded, bruised, or even with a few broken ribs.

Right. The impact of a bullet can never impart more force than the kick of the weapon when it's fired. It'll give you a smack, and certainly could knock you off balance, but it won't send you flying back.

You may certainly jump and flail because you just got a hole punched in you, though.

No. Because the force of the bullet is less than the recoil of the gun. That's why the gyrojet was a thing because it gave no recoil compared to the actual round.

Basically you will never take more force than the guy firing the gun but because the tip of the bullet is a smaller surface area than the butt of the gun, the force is more concentrated.

Sans the energy loss from range etc.

That means unless you are getting shot by 12.7 or bigger, you aren't even going to know you'd been shot other than pain. That's why when people get adrenaline highs, they can get shot and shit and not notice.

>It's why when people wearing plate carrier gets shot they don't get penetration but still end up winded, bruised, or even with a few broken ribs.

But if someone is bulletproof, wouldn't that sort of damage be insignificant? It would be like someone tossing ping pong balls at them.

Heavy, fast ping pong balls

Try to imagine taking a gun and shooting a thick piece of metal. It's thick, so you won't penetrate it. Matter of fact it'll barely get a dent in it, you could say it's bulletproof.

Doesn't mean it won't fall over on impact.

There's a board for this kind of stuff you know?

>At that level of speed, weight becomes less and less relevant.
>put bullet proof vest on ground
>shoot it
>earth flies into the sun

It is like how Taskmaster a mere peak-human isn't blown away the moment he clashes swords against an Asgardian. Comic book bullshit, it ain't gotta explain shit.

Oh shit. And there isn't anything holding the Earth to brace it for the impact. Or any air for air resistance or friction in space.

The guy can withstand the force of the Mariana trench

Kinetic Energy = 1/2 * Mass * Velocity * Velocity

The kinetic energy of a 55gr bullet traveling at 3000ft/s is, converting to metric units (m/s, kg):

1/2 * 0.00356 * 915 * 915 = 1490 Joules

For comparison, an exceptionally fast baseball travels at 105mph. Converting to metric:

1/2 * 0.145 * 47 * 47 = 160 Joules

That said, a lot of energy from a bullet gets converted into heat and noise, as the round deforms and rips itself apart on a hard surface. Not so for a baseball. Check this out:

youtube.com/watch?v=uYtPHRSZ3K8

It takes a lot of energy to flash heat metal enough to liquefy. It's actually what causes long-term damage to steel plates, as well. The shock heating, I mean.

whoa whoa whoa. are you on the right board?

Depends what caliber round and what other powers they have.
If the answers are "high" and "none", then yes.

>The reason bullets don't move people in real life is because their bodies give way to the boolit
No it isn't. People he get shot in vests don't god flying either.

If people had bullet proof skin, it would be so thick that they probably wouldn't be able to blink.

Imagine if there was a villain who's superpower was to negate cape comic bullshittery and plot convenience.

>Even if someone was bulletproof wouldn't the force of the bullet at least stagger them?

No, because bullets don't have remotely enough mass to push a person around. The Hollywood/videogame thing where gunshots knock people on their ass does not happen in real life.

Think about it this way: a gun that can knock people over would also knock the guy firing it over. Equal and opposite reaction.

"bulletproof" usually means their skin and muscles are hard as fuck. You're basically asking why a concrete wall doesnt bend and curve when shot at

There have been loads of characters that can negate powers, you don't need to read shitty anime to find them.

>negate powers
Read again.

>Read again.
>a villain who's superpower was to negate cape comic bullshittery and plot convenience.
Reading it a second time didn't change anything, maybe I need to read more shitty anime for you to use your words?

It broke the skin.
Hit him again.

Yeah, nowhere did I mention it negated powers retard.
His ability is to negate writing that normally would serve to aid the protagonist.

You don't bump into the love of your life on the first day of class.
There is no magic switch that turns off the doomsday device.
There isn't a gun conveniently laying next to you right when the villain is about to blow your brains out.
The radioactive spider doesn't drop down for no apparent reason, to bite some random nerd.

Comic bullshit and plot convenience is independent of superpowers.

>knock the guy firing it over
wait, i thought it can?

>His ability is to negate writing
So the writer changes the writing so that the writing doesn't affect the writing. Sounds like a pretty lonely life if the writer has to fight himself.
>Comic bullshit and plot convenience is independent of superpowers.
Not used to reading comics, are you?

The series that the character comes from revels in messing with the meta. It's lots of fun actually, and doesn't take any of it seriously.

The only plot convenient thing related to superpowers that I remember, is how silver age superman would conveniently develop an ability for whatever specific dilemma was occurring at that time.

Sounds pretty gay. Also, if that's all you remember, then you definitely aren't used to reading comics.

If he's getting hit by bullets why is he smoking? Getting pelted by tiny balls of hot lead wouldn't impart nearly enough heat for that to happen.

Well it depends on ho the bullet stops. In real life we don't fly back because fleshy tissue slows the bullet down over the course of a fraction of a second. However, when bullets just bounce off, that force is applied directly in once spot, and a barrage of bullets in pic related will certainly stagger someone when they bounce off, but it varies depending on strength of the person on the receiving end, or if they just deny physics by doing things like flying.

>Sounds pretty gay.
You sound really butthurt.

>Definitely aren't used to reading comics.
Wildly fluctuating degrees of ability strength too I guess? Provide an example.
I feel we might have different definitions of what we're discussing.

i think the main problem with bullet-proof heroes are the richochets drilling anyone near them

slightly related; saw this the other day and around 38 seconds my immediate thought was "dead civilians"

He's Aquaman. Just figure it's steam.

bullet don't actually produce that much force, they do their damage because they're moving so fast

if bullets knocked people back like in the movies then you'd be knocked back too from firing the gun

although there are some calibers that will dislocate your shoulder if you're not in the right stance and they'd knock someone over getting hit by it

He means it negates plot armor, you retard.

Have you taken into consideration that the motion behind the push continuously slows down? There's a reason knives have better piercing power than a bullet - you can cut through someone wearing a bulletproof vest with a bowie, but you can't fully penetrate it unless you change the circumstances with a normal bullet.

Bullets just burst apart on a hard surface. Most of the force doesn't transfer

>friction in space

Well this has been a disappointing thread. I wanted to write a story about a six year old girl who was bulletproof so when people shot her she just got knocked over.

Is this anime thing angsty bullshit with diablo ex machina instead of deus?

fpbp

A six year old might, adults can fall over when shotting a gun and they are in the wrong stance or holding it wrong.

It would mostly by losing her balance rather than being tossed around tho

That's fine, I just think it would be funny.

If only he actually had those powers.
