Isn't Thor selling relatively well? Better than God of Thunder did at the very least? A consistent 48000-50000 is pretty good for a title/character that was considered B rate within recent memory.

sales are good and consistent, but their ranking in top 300 has tanked because rebirth has been great for dc.
take ms marvel, august 2015 it sold 31k and was the 62nd best selling comic, jump to august 2016 and it's selling 29k but dropped to 95. in the top 50 comics for august 2016, 10 are from marvel, 3 of which are star wars related.

OP here. My opinion is that Marvel's main consumerbase currently is based on media coverage and the MCU boost, and once that deflates, there's gonna be a huge slump.

I think the dude's wrong, but comic sales are in the toilet. They get a little more flushed every year. The solution is the stuff Marvel is doing. Bringing in new markets and stuff. They need to work on getting kids too.

Have you checked out any other print medium lately? Newspapers? Magazines? How about record sales?
It's not their salesmanship that is causing that. They rule a Market that is shrinking inevitably because of outside factors, mostly how much free entertainment is at the fingertips of anyone with an internet connection.

Printed media isnt going anywhere. Marvel just lacks the talent, has been lacking talent for a decade now. And their latest stunt of pandering towards a target audience that does not read comic books was a stupid idea. Femthors and nigger Spidermans are just a passing fad, nothing more. You can already see it in both the movie-verse and the toylines Disney keeps putting out. Do you see the new diverse characters in those? They don't. Marvel's cycle of racebaiting, outrage, and yearly events is starting to backfire.
Even by those standards SquirrelGirl and Hellcat in particular are plenty fucking bad quality-wise. Story and artwork are both horrendous, which is why Tumblr and women read webcomics like Unsounded instead of badly written, badly drawn shit like Hellcat and SquirrelGirl.
the first step to fixing Marvel is fixing their editorial structure. None of the boneheaded shit they've been doing happened by accident.
In other words, fire Bendis, Alonso, and probably the rest of the editors too. Whoever replaces them should insure it's a strict meritocracy (or as strict as possible). None of the bullshit where people promote their buddies. Get someone in charge who can tell good stories and has excellent taste in comics, and cares about nothing but that. keep the politics to a minimum. Treat artists and writers well and pay them decently. NO MORE PRICE HIKES. NO MORE RELAUNCHES. Get a staff member or two whose only job is to check continuity. FEWER ALTERNATE COVERS. Get the best writers you can and let them do (within reason) whatever they want. Diversity is fine but it must be done right -- slow integration of new characters. Examples: Kate Bishop, Kamala Khan, Miles Morales. Keep events to a minimum.

Marvel and DC can try to rig their sales charts as much as they want, retailers are slowly realizing people are not actually buying any of the new diverse badly drawn crap.

here's my issue. regardless of how they rig things, behind the scenes, Marvel and DC surely know what they're selling, and how much of it. (If they don't, that's inexcusable and should be fixed ASAP. Either the sales charts us plebes have access to are inaccurate or they're in denial. If I had to guess they're in the "wait a few more months to see if sales go up" stage.

They're not losing any money. Sales are exactly where they would have been regardless of DC's relaunch.
DC's sales are all subject to downgrading after the fact, because they're no longer final sales to retailers and don't represent an increase in the size of the market - only in the number of copies printed and shipped. 60% of those copies will probably be pulped, unsold.

Again, you really need to understand: sale or return is not a sales model that you can report the same month as the books were shipped. You're going to have to wait for the year-end report from DC about how many of those titles they actually sold.
