It is inevitable that actors become too old to reprise the roles they're known for, either that or they lose the physique or mentality for it. You ever notice how Worf and Riker would slowly get real fat as TNG went through the seasons? Something like that is what I mean, although that's not to say that all actors can't do their shtick after the years take their tole.
I imagine the childhood actors are the ones that get hit the hardest, since their image is set young and thus they need to adapt it quicker and harder.
