Since you find Volume 1 ok, I would say go for it.
Volume 2 is generaly seen as an improvement (higher production qualities and such), though it ends on a very weak note.
Volume 3 is where most people say it started being actually good.

I think what you're downplaying is that Vale is one of the few safe bastions of humanity on a planet overrun with monsters. In that situation any sort of breach, even one that is contained, is a big deal. That's why Cinder could exploit the unease it sowed in the citizens.

That whole situation was a mess in and of itself. Shane had an unhealthy obsession with both Monty and Sheena and put them both on a really high pedestal.

He was angry at everyone for not bringing everything to a screeching halt to mourn and "honor" Monty and had issues with them shutting Sheena out despite the fact that a., RT is a business and b., Sheena was never part of the company in any official capacity and therefore had no pull or clearance with them.

Monty was kinda bad at stories and he knew it, it's why M&K were invovled. He also had a habit of going "hey I wanna do this write it in" like with the prom arc being done because he wanted to animate a dance sequence.

I'd say the only area that had fallen in quality would be the fighting choreography. Bit of that is to blame on the time crunch they had I think, so we'll have to see how it has improved in V4.

Most of it was just making everything big and flashy, and in some parts the use of some comedy, to distract from the lack of any real fighting happening, at least compared to the fighting we've seen in volume 1 and 2.

Overall Volume 4 will tell us a lot more on where things have improved and where things have fallen in quality in comparison.
