I'm specifying shounen manga because those things are primarily aimed at kids so the author doesn't need to pretend he's writing a love story and adds more than one possible love interest for bait. This gets shippers in frenzies due to them maybe liking the other character and then somehow forgetting this is a manga for children and they don't really care about that shit, but the older fanbase does.

A prime example of this is Nisekoi. It's a standard harem fare, but despite the main girl being first on every piece of merchandise and coverage you can think of, even getting her own sprite in Super Mario Maker, there are people who thought other girls in the harem would win.

So then you go ahead and apply that to Star, or really many cartoons aimed at kids and there you go. The more obvious it is, the more likely someone will try to find a way around it.

That could be interesting, but I struggle to see how it could work.
The issue is that Star can't really rebel against "the man" - she's the next in line for the throne, with no siblings. An "underdog vs authority" story doesn't really work when the "underdog" has a basically unchallenged shot at being a ruling monarch.

I was thinking it was a ploy for Tom to figure out why Star likes Marco.

Season 2 started us off with what she can do without a wand. The badguys have started to get a little more serious, a little more powerful. But we don't know where it's going. And. And what? What is the goal for Star in the long run? She was sent to Earth with the vague goal of "training", and while we've seen her get better with magic, that goal is set to be simply unobtainable in the logic of a cartoon. There have been plenty of shows with no goal, and there have been plenty of terrible shows. I think the show needs a direction, and I think it needs it before the third season hits.
