Second of all, the kings of the past had power over their own lives and even the lives of their subjects; they could do as they pleased without any consequence. The poor of today can barely afford to pay rent and feed themselves, let alone support a family or buy many of the products and services that rely on their labor.
Finally, the funny thing is that living standards don't only improve under Western capitalist economic conditions. There's irrefutable evidence that slaves in 1850 were better off than slaves in 1750. Likewise, the Soviet Union until the mid 1970s saw huge increases in economic development and living standards. What is a proper profit margin for a small business of around 35 people?

Mine makes about 4m and pays out about 1.7m to payroll. Obviously I know there are other bills to pay, but it seems like our CEO could easily take 1m of that for himself, and we could pay our bills and have profit left to the coffers. If you do the math, you can see people aren't paid that much on average.

I'm doing well and am in a position to make a change. I wouldn't do so without perusing the truth behind the numbers, but not sure I should stick my nose in. Our only real costs that aren't included in that 1.7m are rent and equipment (basically a computer and cubicle for each person). Worth noting our CEO does bust his ass. I think he deserves significantly more than everyone else considering how hard he works and what he has done in the past, but it seems a little crazy when everyone else seems to be suffering heavily. Should I talk to him?
